< Psalms 22 >

1 For the end, concerning the morning aid, a Psalm of David. O God, my God, attend to me: why hast thou forsaken me? the account of my transgressions is far from my salvation.
For the music director. To the tune “Doe of the Dawn.” A psalm of David. My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away when I groan, asking for help?
2 O my God, I will cry to thee by day, but thou wilt not hear: and by night, and [it shall] not [be accounted] for folly to me.
My God, every day I cry out to you, but you don't answer; at night too, but I get no rest.
3 But thou, the praise of Israel, dwellest in a sanctuary.
Yet you are holy, and the praises of Israel are your throne.
4 Our fathers hoped in thee; they hoped, and thou didst deliver them.
Our forefathers trusted in you; they trusted and you rescued them.
5 They cried to thee, and were saved: they hoped in thee, and were not ashamed.
They cried out to you for help, and they were saved. They trusted in you and were not defeated.
6 But I am a worm, and not a man; a reproach of men, and scorn of the people.
But I'm a worm, not a man, scorned and despised by everyone.
7 All that saw me mocked me: they spoke with [their] lips, they shook the head, [saying],
People who see me mock me. They laugh at me and shake their heads, saying,
8 He hoped in the Lord: let him deliver him, let him save him, because he takes pleasure in him.
“He trusts in the Lord—well then, let the Lord save him! If the Lord is such a friend, then let the Lord rescue him!”
9 For thou art he that drew me out of the womb; my hope from my mother's breasts.
However, you brought me safely through birth, and led me to trust in you at my mother's breasts.
10 I was cast on thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly.
I was entrusted to you from birth; from the time I was born you have been my God.
11 Stand not aloof from me; for affliction is near; for there is no helper.
Do not be distant from me, because trouble is close by and no one else can help.
12 Many bullocks have compassed me: fat bulls have beset me round.
Enemies surround me like a herd of bulls; strong bulls from Bashan have encircled me.
13 They have opened their mouth against me, as a ravening and roaring lion.
Like roaring lions tearing at their prey they open their mouths wide against me.
14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are loosened: my heart in the midst of my belly is become like melting wax.
I feel like I'm being poured out like water. I'm falling apart as if all my bones have become loose. My mind feels like it's wax melting inside me.
15 My strength is dried up, like a potsherd; and my tongue is glued to my throat; and thou hast brought me down to the dust of death.
My strength has dried up like a piece of broken pottery. My tongue is stuck to the roof of my mouth. You're burying me as if I'm already dead.
16 For many dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked doers has beset me round: they pierced my hands and my feet.
Evil men surround me like a pack of dogs. They have pierced my hands and feet.
17 They counted all my bones; and they observed and looked upon me.
I'm so thin I can count all my bones. People stare at me and gloat.
18 They parted my garments [among] themselves, and cast lots upon my raiment.
They divide my clothing among them; they roll dice for my clothes.
19 But thou, O Lord, remove not my help afar off: be ready for mine aid.
But you, Lord, don't be far away from me! You are my strength—hurry, come and help me!
20 Deliver my soul from the sword; my only-begotten one from the power of the dog.
Save me from death by the sword! Save my life—the only one I have—from the dogs!
21 Save me from the lion's mouth; and [regard] my lowliness from the horns of the unicorns.
Rescue me from the mouth of the lion and from the wild bulls!
22 I will declare thy name to my brethren: in the midst of the church will I sing praise to thee.
I will tell my people all the wonderful things you have done; I will praise you in the congregation.
23 Ye that fear the Lord, praise him; all ye seed of Jacob, glorify him: let all the seed of Israel fear him.
Praise the Lord, all who worship him! Honor him, every descendant of Jacob! Be in awe of him, every descendant of Israel!
24 For he has not despised nor been angry at the supplication of the poor; nor turned away his face from me; but when I cried to him, he heard me.
For he has not ridiculed or scorned the suffering of the poor; he has not turned away from them, he has listened to their cries for help.
25 My praise is of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him.
You are the subject of my praise in the great assembly. I will fulfill my promises before those who worship you.
26 The poor shall eat and be satisfied; and they shall praise the Lord that seek him: their heart shall live for ever.
The poor shall eat, and they shall be satisfied. All who come to the Lord will praise him—may you all live forever!
27 All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before him.
Everyone in the whole world will repent and return to the Lord; all the nations will worship before you.
28 For the kingdom is the Lord's; and he is the governor of the nations.
For kingly power belongs to the Lord; he is the one who rules over the nations.
29 All the fat ones of the earth have eaten and worshipped: all that go down to the earth shall fall down before him: my soul also lives to him.
All who prosper come to feast and worship. Bow down before him, all those destined for the grave—for none can keep themselves alive.
30 And my seed shall serve him: the generation that is coming shall be reported to the Lord.
Our descendants will serve him; they will tell the next generation about the Lord.
31 And they shall report his righteousness to the people that shall be born, whom the Lord has made.
They will come and tell those yet to be born how good the Lord is, and all that he has done!
