< Psalms 144 >

1 [A Psalm] of David concerning Goliad. Blessed [be] the Lord my God, who instructs my hands for battle, [and] my fingers for war.
“By David.” Blessed be the Lord my Rock, who exerciseth my hands for the battle, my fingers for the war:
2 My mercy, and my refuge; my helper, and my deliverer; my protector, in whom I have trusted; who subdues my people under me.
My kindness, and my strong-hold; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.
3 Lord, what is man, that thou art made known to him? or the son of man, that thou takest account of him?
Lord, what is man, that thou takest cognizance of him: the son of a mortal, that thou regardest him!
4 Man is like to vanity: his days pass as a shadow.
Man is like the breath: his days are like a passing shadow.
5 O Lord, bow thy heavens, and come down: touch the mountains, and they shall smoke.
O Lord, bend thy heavens, and come down: touch the mountains, that they may smoke.
6 Send lightning, and thou shalt scatter them: send forth thine arrows, and thou shalt discomfit them.
Cast forth lightning, and scatter them: send out thy arrows, and confound them.
7 Send forth thine hand from on high; rescue me, and deliver me out of great waters, out of the hand of strange children;
Stretch out thy hands from above; rid me, and deliver me out of great waters, from the hand of the children of the stranger.
8 whose mouth has spoken vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of iniquity.
Whose mouth speaketh vanity, and whose right hand is the right hand of falsehood.
9 O God, I will sing a new song to thee: I will play to thee on a psaltery of ten strings.
O God, a new song will I sing unto thee: upon the ten-stringed psaltery will I sing praises unto thee.
10 [Even] to him who gives salvation to kings: who redeems his servant David from the hurtful sword.
[Thou art he] that giveth victory unto kings: who riddeth David his servant from the evil-bringing sword.
11 Deliver me, and rescue me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth has spoken vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of iniquity;
Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of the children of the stranger, whose mouth speaketh vanity, and whose right hand is the right hand of falsehood.
12 whose children are as plants, strengthened in their youth: their daughters are beautiful, sumptuously adorned after the similitude of a temple.
So that our sons may be like plants, grown up in their youth: our daughters, like corner-pillars, sculptured in the model of a palace.
13 Their garners are full, and bursting with one kind of store after another; their sheep are prolific, multiplying in their streets.
May our garners be full, furnishing all manner of store: our sheep bringing forth thousands and ten thousands in our open pastures.
14 Their oxen are fat: there is no falling down of a hedge, nor going out, nor cry in their folds.
May our oxen be strong to labor: may there be no breach, nor migration, nor loud complaint in our streets.
15 Men bless the people to whom this lot belongs, [but] blessed is the people whose God is the Lord.
Happy the people, that fare thus: happy the people, whose God is the Lord.
