Proverbs 30
1 These things says the man to them that trust in God; and I cease.
Paroles d'Agur, fils de Jaqué, prophétie, oracle donné par l'Homme à Ithiel, à Ithiel et à Uchal.
2 For I am the most simple of all men, and there is not in me the wisdom of men.
Oui, je suis plus stupide que personne, et je n'ai point l'intelligence d'un humain;
3 God has taught me wisdom, and I know the knowledge of the holy.
et je n'ai ni appris la sagesse, ni connu la science des saints.
4 Who has gone up to heaven, and come down? who has gathered the winds in his bosom? who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? who has dominion of all the ends of the earth? what is his name? or what is the name of his children?
Qui monta au ciel, et en redescendit? Qui enserra le vent dans ses mains? Qui enveloppa les eaux dans sa robe? Qui plaça toutes les bornes de la terre? Quel est son nom et le nom de son fils, si tu le sais?
5 For all the words of God are tried in the fire, and he defends those that reverence him.
Toute parole de Dieu est pure. Il est un bouclier pour ceux qui se confient en Lui.
6 Add not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be made a liar.
N'ajoute rien à ce qu'il a dit, de peur qu'il ne te châtie, et que tu ne sois convaincu de mensonge.
7 Two things I ask of thee; take not favour from me before I die.
Je Te demande deux choses: ne me les refuse pas, avant que je meure!
8 Remove far from me vanity and falsehood: and give me not wealth [or] poverty; but appoint me what is needful and sufficient:
Eloigne de moi la fausseté et le langage menteur; ne me donne ni pauvreté, ni richesse, nourris-moi du pain qui est pour moi le nécessaire;
9 lest I be filled and become false, and say, Who sees me? or be poor and steal, and swear [vainly] by the name of God.
de peur que rassasié je ne te renie, et ne dise: « Qui est l'Éternel? » ou qu'appauvri je ne dérobe, et ne m'attaque au nom de mon Dieu!
10 Deliver not a servant into the hands of his master, lest he curse thee, and thou be utterly destroyed.
Ne calomnie pas le serviteur auprès de son maître, de peur qu'il ne te maudisse, et que tu ne sois puni!
11 A wicked generation curse their father, and do not bless their mother.
Il est une race qui maudit son père, et ne bénit point sa mère.
12 A wicked generation judge themselves to be just, but do not cleanse their way.
Il est une race qui est pure à ses propres yeux, tandis que de sa souillure elle n'est point lavée.
13 A wicked generation have lofty eyes, and exalt themselves with their eyelids.
Il est une race… que ses yeux sont altiers, et ses paupières hautaines!
14 A wicked generation have swords [for] teeth and jaw-teeth [as] knives, so as to destroy and devour the lowly from the earth, and the poor of them from among men.
Il est une race dont les dents sont des glaives, et les molaires des couteaux, pour dévorer le malheureux sur la terre, et les indigents, parmi les hommes.
15 The horse-leech had three dearly-beloved daughters: and these three did not satisfy her; and the fourth was not contented so as to say, Enough.
L'Aluca a deux filles: Donne! Donne! Trois choses sont insatiables, il en est quatre qui jamais ne disent: « C'est assez! »
16 The grave, and the love of a woman, and the earth not filled with water; water also and fire will not say, It is enough. (Sheol h7585)
les Enfers, et la femme stérile, la terre jamais rassasiée d'eau, et le feu qui jamais ne dit: « C'est assez! » (Sheol h7585)
17 The eye that laughs to scorn a father, and dishonours the old age of a mother, let the ravens of the valleys pick it out, and let the young eagles devour it.
L'œil qui se moque d'un père, et dédaigne l'obéissance envers une mère, les corbeaux de la vallée l'arracheront, et les petits de l'aigle le mangeront.
18 Moreover there are three things impossible for me to comprehend, and the fourth I know not:
Trois choses passent ma portée, il en est quatre que je ne pénètre pas:
19 the track of a flying eagle; and the ways of a serpent on a rock; and the paths of a ship passing through the sea; and the ways of a man in youth.
la trace de l'aigle dans les Cieux, la trace du serpent sur le rocher, la trace du navire au sein de la mer, et la trace de l'homme qui va vers une vierge.
20 Such is the way of an adulterous woman, who having washed herself from what she has done, says she has done nothing amiss.
Telle est la manière de la femme adultère: elle mange, et s'essuie la bouche et dit: « Je n'ai point fait de mal. »
21 By three thing the earth is troubled, and the fourth it cannot bear:
Trois choses font trembler un pays, il en est quatre qu'il ne peut supporter:
22 if a servant reign; or a fool be filled with food;
un esclave devenu roi, un insensé dans l'abondance,
23 or if a maid-servant should cast out her own mistress; and if a hateful woman should marry a good man.
la femme dédaignée devenue épouse, et la servante qui a chassé sa maîtresse.
24 And [there are] four very little things upon the earth, but these are wiser than the wise:
Il y a sur la terre quatre animaux très petits, et pourtant sages et bien avisés:
25 the ants which are weak, and [yet] prepare [their] food in summer;
les fourmis, peuple qui n'est point fort, et pourtant en été elles font leurs provisions;
26 the rabbits also [are] a feeble race, who make their houses in the rocks.
les gerboises, peuple qui n'est point vigoureux, et pourtant dans les rochers elles pratiquent leur gîte;
27 The locusts have no king, and [yet] march orderly at one command.
les sauterelles n'ont point de roi, et pourtant elles sortent toutes formées en bataillons;
28 And the eft, which supports itself by [its] hands, and is easily taken, dwells in the fortresses of kings.
le lézard saisit avec ses mains, et se trouve dans les palais des rois.
29 And there are three things which go well, and a fourth which passes along finely.
Trois ont une belle démarche, et quatre, une belle allure:
30 A lion's whelp, stronger than [all other] beasts, which turns not away, nor fears [any] beast;
le lion, héros entre les animaux, et qui ne recule devant personne;
31 and a cock walking in boldly among the hens, and the goat leading the herd; and a king publicly speaking before a nation.
[le coursier] ceint aux reins du harnais, ou le bélier et le roi à qui l'on ne peut tenir tête.
32 If thou abandon thyself to mirth, and stretch forth thine hand in a quarrel, thou shalt be disgraced.
Si tu as été fou par orgueil, et si tu as pensé à mal…. la main sur la bouche!
33 Milk out milk, and there shall be butter, and if thou wing [one's] nostrils there shall come out blood: so if thou extort words, there will come forth quarrels and strifes.
Car la pression du lait produit du beurre, et la pression du nez produit du sang, et la pression de la colère produit la rixe.
