Proverbs 14
1 Wise women build houses: but a foolish one digs [hers] down with her hands.
Sage, une femme élève sa maison; insensée, de ses propres mains elle la démolit.
2 He that walks uprightly fears the Lord; but he that is perverse in his ways shall be dishonoured.
L'homme qui marche dans la droiture, craint l'Éternel; mais, si ses voies se détournent, il Le méprise.
3 Out of the mouth of fools [comes] a rod of pride; but the lips of the wise preserve them.
L'insensé a dans sa bouche même la verge de son orgueil; mais par leurs lèvres les sages sont garantis.
4 Where no oxen are, the cribs are clean; but where there is abundant produce, the strength of the ox is apparent.
Où il n'y a pas de bœufs, le grenier est vide; mais la vigueur du taureau donne un gros revenu.
5 A faithful witness does not lie; but an unjust witness kindles falsehoods.
Le témoin véridique ne ment point; mais le faux témoin profère le mensonge.
6 Thou shalt seek wisdom with bad men, and shalt not find it; but discretion is easily available with the prudent.
Le moqueur cherche la sagesse sans la trouver; mais pour l'intelligent la science est chose facile.
7 All things are adverse to a foolish man; but wise lips are the weapons of discretion.
Va te placer en face de l'insensé; tu ne pourras découvrir la sagesse sur ses lèvres.
8 The wisdom of the prudent will understand their ways; but the folly of fools leads astray.
La sagesse du prudent, c'est de faire attention à sa voie; mais la folie des insensés est une duperie.
9 The houses of transgressors will need purification; but the houses of the just are acceptable.
Les insensés se font un jeu du crime; mais parmi les hommes de bien il y a bienveillance.
10 [If] a man's mind is intelligent, his soul is sorrowful; and when he rejoices, he has no fellowship with pride.
Le cœur connaît son propre chagrin; et autrui ne saurait entrer en part de sa joie.
11 The houses of ungodly men shall be utterly destroyed; but the tabernacles of them that walk uprightly shall stand.
La maison des impies est détruite, et la tente des gens de bien, florissante.
12 There is a way which seems to be right with men, but the ends of it reach to the depths of hell. (questioned)
Telle voie paraît droite à l'homme, mais elle aboutit au chemin de la mort.
13 Grief mingles not with mirth; and joy in the end comes to grief.
L'on peut, quand on rit, avoir le chagrin dans le cœur; et la joie peut finir en tristesse.
14 A stout-hearted [man] shall be filled with his own ways; and a good man with his own thoughts.
Des fruits de sa conduite il sera rassasié celui dont le cœur s'égare, et l'homme de bien, de ce qui lui revient.
15 The simple believes every word: but the prudent man betakes himself to after-thought.
L'inconsidéré ajoute foi à toute parole; le prudent est attentif à ses pas.
16 A wise man fears, and departs from evil; but the fool trusts in himself, and joins himself with the transgressor.
Le sage est timide, et fuit le mal; mais l'insensé est présomptueux, et plein de sécurité.
17 A passionate man acts inconsiderately; but a sensible man bears up under many things.
L'homme prompt à s'irriter agit follement; mais l'homme d'intrigue se fait haïr.
18 Fools shall have mischief for their portion; but the prudent shall take fast hold of understanding.
Les insensés sont en possession de la folie; mais les justes ont pour couronne la science.
19 Evil men shall fall before the good; and the ungodly shall attend at the gates of the righteous.
Les méchants s'inclinent devant les bons, et les impies, à la porte du juste.
20 Friends will hate poor friends; but the friends of the rich are many.
A son prochain même le pauvre est odieux; mais ceux qui aiment le riche, sont nombreux.
21 He that dishonours the needy sins: but he that has pity on the poor is most blessed.
Qui méprise son prochain, pèche: mais heureux qui a pitié des misérables!
22 They that go astray devise evils: but the good devise mercy and truth. The framers of evil do not understand mercy and truth: but compassion and faithfulness are with the framers of good.
Ceux qui font le mal, ne se fourvoient-ils pas? Mais ceux qui font le bien, trouvent amour et confiance.
23 With every one [who is] careful there is abundance: but the pleasure-taking and indolent shall be in want.
Tout labeur donne abondance; mais les discours des lèvres ne mènent qu'à l'indigence.
24 A prudent man is the crown of the wise: but the occupation of fools is evil.
La couronne des sages est leur richesse; la folie des insensés, c'est la folie.
25 A faithful witness shall deliver a soul from evil: but a deceitful [man] kindles falsehoods.
Le témoin véridique est le libérateur des âmes; mais celui qui trompe, souffle le mensonge.
26 In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and he leaves his children a support.
La crainte de l'Éternel donne une confiance ferme; et pour Ses enfants Il sera un refuge.
27 The commandment of the Lord is a fountain of life; and it causes [men] to turn aside from the snare of death.
La crainte de l'Éternel est une source de vie, pour échapper aux lacs de la mort.
28 In a populous nation is the glory of a king: but in the failure of people is the ruin of a prince.
Un peuple nombreux donne au roi sa splendeur; mais le manque d'hommes est la ruine du prince.
29 A man slow to wrath abounds in wisdom: but a man of impatient spirit is very foolish.
L'homme lent à s'irriter a un grand sens; l'irascible met en vue sa folie.
30 A meek-spirited man is a healer of the heart: but a sensitive heart is a corruption of the bones.
Un cœur sain est la vie du corps; mais l'envie est la carie des os.
31 He that oppresses the needy provokes his Maker: but he that honours him has pity upon the poor.
Qui opprime les petits, outrage son créateur; mais celui-là l'honore, qui prend pitié des pauvres.
32 The ungodly shall be driven away in his wickedness: but he who is secure in his own holiness is just.
Par ses revers l'impie est renversé; mais dans la mort même le juste est plein d'assurance.
33 There is wisdom in the good heart of a man: but in the heart of fools it is not discerned.
Dans le cœur sensé la sagesse repose; mais au milieu des fous elle se manifeste.
34 Righteousness exalts a nation: but sins diminish tribes.
La justice élève une nation, mais le péché est l'opprobre des peuples.
35 An understanding servant is acceptable to a king; and by his good behaviour he removes disgrace.
Le roi donne sa faveur au serviteur entendu, mais au méchant serviteur son courroux.
