Nehemiah 2
1 And it came to pass in the month Nisan of the twentieth year of king Arthasastha, that the wine was before me: and I took the wine, and gave [it] to the king: and there was not another before him.
Or il arriva au mois de Nisan, en la vingtième année du roi Artaxerxès, que le vin était devant lui; et je pris le vin, et je le donnai au roi, et jetais comme languissant devant sa face.
2 And the king said to me, Why is thy countenance sad, and dost thou not control thyself? and now this is nothing but sorrow of heart. Then I was very much alarmed,
Et le roi me dit: Pourquoi ton visage est-il triste, quoique je ne te voie point malade? Ce n’est pas en vain, mais je ne sais le mal qui est en ton cœur. Et je craignis beaucoup et extrêmement.
3 and I said to the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be said, forasmuch as the city, even the home of the sepulchres of my fathers, has been laid waste, and her gates have been devoured with fire?
Et je dis au roi: Roi, vivez éternellement. Pourquoi mon visage ne serait-il pas triste, puisque la ville, maison des tombeaux de mes pères, est déserte, et que ses portes ont été brûlées au feu.
4 And the king said to me, For what dost thou ask thus? So I prayed to the God of heaven.
Et le roi me dit: Que demandes-tu? Alors je priai le Dieu du ciel,
5 And I said to the king, If [it seem] good to the king, and if thy servant shall have found favour in thy sight, [I ask] that [thou] wouldest send him into Juda, to the city of the sepulchres of my fathers; then will I rebuild it.
Et je répondis au roi: S’il semble bon au roi, et si votre serviteur est agréable devant votre face, que le roi m’envoie en Judée, dans la ville du sépulcre de mon père, et je la rebâtirai.
6 And the king, and his concubine that sat next to him, said to me, For how long will thy journey be, and when wilt thou return? and [the proposal] was pleasing before the king, and he sent me away, and I appointed him a time.
Alors le roi me demanda, et la reine qui était assise auprès de lui: Jusqu’à quel temps durera ton voyage, et quand reviendras-tu? Et il fut agréable devant la face du roi de m’envoyer; et je lui marquai le temps.
7 And I said to the king, If [it seem] good to the king, let him give me letters to the governors beyond the river, so as to forward me till I come to Juda;
Puis je dis au roi: S’il semble bon au roi, qu’il me donne des lettres pour les chefs de la contrée au-delà du fleuve, afin qu’ils me fassent conduire jusqu’à ce que je sois arrivé en Judée;
8 and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the garden which belongs to the king, that he may give me timber to cover the gates, and for the wall of the city, and for the house into which I shall enter. And the king gave to me, according as the good hand of God [was upon me].
Et une lettre pour Asaph, gardien de la forêt du roi, afin qu’il me donne des bois, et que je puisse couvrir les portes de la tour de la maison, et les murs de la ville, et la maison dans laquelle j’entrerai. Et le roi me les donna, à cause que la main favorable de mon Dieu était avec moi.
9 And I came to the governors beyond the river, and I gave them the king's letters. (Now the king had sent with me captains of the army and horsemen.)
Et je vins vers les chefs de la contrée au-delà du fleuve, et je leur donnai les lettres du roi. Or le roi avait envoyé avec moi des princes de la milice, et des cavaliers.
10 And Sanaballat the Aronite heard [it], and Tobia the servant, the Ammonite, and it was grievous to them that a man was come to seek good for the children of Israel.
Et Sanaballat, l’Horonite, et Tobie, le serviteur Ammanite, l’apprirent, et ils furent saisis d’une grande affliction, parce qu’il était venu un homme qui cherchait la prospérité des enfants d’Israël.
11 So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.
Et je vins à Jérusalem, et je fus là trois jours.
12 And I rose up by night, I and a few men with me; and I told no man what God put into my heart to do with Israel; and there was no beast with me, except the beast which I rode upon.
Et je me levai pendant la nuit, et un petit nombre d’hommes avec moi, et je ne dis à personne ce que Dieu avait mis en mon cœur de faire à Jérusalem; et je n’avais pas de bête avec moi, si ce n’est l’animal sur lequel j’étais assis.
13 And I went forth by the gate of the valley by night, and to the mouth of the well of fig trees, and to the dung-gate: and I mourned over the wall of Jerusalem which they were destroying, and her gates were devoured with fire.
Or je sortis par la porte de la vallée pendant la nuit, et devant la fontaine du dragon, et à la porte du fumier; et je considérais le mur de Jérusalem abattu, et ses portes consumées par le feu.
14 And I passed on to the fountain gate, and to the king's pool; and there was no room for the beast to pass under me.
Je passai donc à la porte de la fontaine, et à l’aqueduc du roi, et il n’y avait pas d’endroit pour que la bête sur laquelle j’étais assis passât.
15 And I went up by the wall of the brook by night, and mourned over the wall, and passed through the gate of the valley, and returned.
Et je montai par le torrent pendant la nuit, et je considérais le mur; et, revenant, j’arrivai à la porte de la vallée, et je retournai.
16 And the sentinels knew not why I went, nor what I was doing; and until that time I told [it] not to the Jews, or to the priests, or to the nobles, or to the captains, or to the rest [of the men] who wrought the works.
Or les magistrats ne savaient où j’étais allé, ni ce que je faisais; bien plus, aux Juifs mêmes, aux prêtres, aux grands, aux magistrats, et à ceux qui faisaient l’ouvrage, je n’avais rien révélé jusque là.
17 Then I said to them, Ye see this evil, in which we are, how Jerusalem is desolate, and her gates have been set on fire: come, and let us build throughout the wall of Jerusalem, and we shall be no longer a reproach.
Je leur dis alors: Vous connaissez l’affliction dans laquelle nous sommes, puisque Jérusalem est déserte, et que ses portes ont été consumées par le feu: venez, et bâtissons les murs de Jérusalem, et ne soyons plus désormais un opprobre.
18 And I told them of the hand of God which was good upon me, also about the words of the king which he spoke to me: and I said, Let us arise and build. And their hands were strengthened for the good [work].
Et je leur montrai que la main de mon Dieu était bonne pour moi, et les paroles du roi, qu’il m’avait adressées; et je dis: Levons-nous, et bâtissons. Et leurs mains furent affermies dans le bien.
19 And Sanaballat the Aronite, and Tobia the servant, the Ammonite, and Gesam the Arabian, heard [it], and they laughed us to scorn, and came to us, and said, What [is] this thing that ye are doing? are ye revolting against the king?
Or Sanaballat, l’Horonite, et Tobie, le serviteur Ammanite, et Gossem, l’Arabe, l’apprirent, et ils nous raillèrent, nous méprisèrent, et dirent: Qu’est-ce que vous faites? Ne vous révoltez-vous point contre le roi?
20 And I answered them, and said to them, The God of heaven, he shall prosper us, and we his servants are pure, and we will build: but ye have no part, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.
Et je leur rendis réponse et leur dis: Le Dieu du ciel lui-même nous aide, et nous, nous sommes ses serviteurs: levons-nous et bâtissons; mais pour vous il n’y a ni part, ni droit, ni souvenir en Jérusalem.
