Joshua 9
1 And when the kings of the Amorites on the other side of Jordan, who were in the mountain country, and in the plain, and in all the coast of the great sea, and those who were near Antilibanus, and the Chettites, and the Chananites, and the Pherezites, and the Evites, and the Amorites, and the Gergesites, and the Jebusites, heard [of it],
Als nun alle die Könige, die jenseits des Jordan auf dem Gebirge und in der Niederung und überall längs dem Gestade des großen Meeres bis an den Libanon hin wohnten, dies vernahmen - die Hethiter, Amoriter, Kanaaniter, Pheresiter, Heviter und Jebusiter, -
2 they came all together at the same time to make war against Joshua and Israel.
da thaten sie sich einmütig alle zusammen, um Josua und die Israeliten zu bekämpfen.
3 And the inhabitants of Gabaon heard of all that the Lord did to Jericho and Gai.
Aber auch die Bewohner von Gibeon vernahmen, wie Josua mit Jericho und Ai verfahren war.
4 And they also wrought craftily, and they went and made provision and prepared themselves; and having taken old sacks on their shoulders, and old and rent and patched bottles of wine,
Da wollten auch sie listig handeln und gingen daran, sich mit Zehrung für die Reise zu versehen, und nahmen abgenutzte Säcke für ihre Esel und alte zerrissene und zusammengebundene Weinschläuche
5 and the upper part of their shoes and their sandals old and clouted on their feet, and their garments old upon them—and the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy and corrupt.
und legten alte geflickte Sandalen und abgenutzte Kleider an, und alles Brot, das sie als Mundvorrat mitnahmen, war hart und zerkrümelt.
6 And they came to Joshua into the camp of Israel to Galgala, and said to Joshua and Israel, We are come from a far land: now then make a covenant with us.
So begaben sie sich zu Josua in das Lager im Gilgal und sprachen zu ihm und den israelitischen Männern: Aus fernem Lande kommen wir; so trefft nun ein friedliches Abkommen mit uns!
7 And the children of Israel said to the Chorrhaean, Peradventure thou dwellest amongst us; and how should I make a covenant with thee?
Da antworteten die israelitischen Männer den Heviten: Vielleicht wohnt ihr mitten unter uns; wie können wir da ein friedliches Abkommen mit euch treffen!
8 And they said to Joshua, We are thy servants: and Joshua said to them, Whence are ye, and whence have ye come?
Da sprachen sie zu Josua: Wir wollen dir unterthan sein. Da fragte sie Josua: Wer seid ihr, und woher kommt ihr?
9 And they said, Thy servants are come from a very far country in the name of the Lord thy God: for we have heard his name, and all that he did in Egypt,
Sie erwiderten ihm: Aus einem sehr fernen Lande kommen wir, deine Knechte, um des Ruhmes Jahwes, deines Gottes, willen; denn wir haben von ihm gehört, sowohl alles das, was er den Ägyptern angethan hat,
10 and all that he did to the kings of the Amorites, who were beyond Jordan, to Seon king of the Amorites, and Og king of Basan, who dwelt in Astaroth and in Edrain.
als auch alles das, was er den beiden Königen der Amoriter, die jenseits des Jordan wohnten, Sihon, dem Könige von Hesbon, und Og, dem Könige von Basan zu Astaroth, angethan hat.
11 And our elders and all that inhabit our land when they heard spoke to us, saying, Take to yourselves provision for the way, and go to meet them; and ye shall say to them, We are thy servants, and now make a covenant with us.
Da geboten uns unsere Häuptlinge und alle Bewohner unseres Landes: Versorgt euch mit Zehrung für die Reise, zieht ihnen entgegen und sprecht zu ihnen: Wir wollen euch unterthan sein; so trefft nun ein friedliches Abkommen mit uns!
12 These [are] the loaves—we took them hot for our journey on the day on which we came out to come to you; and now they are dried and become mouldy.
Hier ist unser Brot; wir haben es noch warm aus unserer Heimat als Zehrung für uns mitgenommen, als wir uns auf den Weg zu euch machten, und nun ist es hart geworden und zerkrümelt.
13 And these [are] the skins of wine which we filled when new, and they are rent; and our garments and our shoes are worn out because of the very long journey.
Und da sind die Weinschläuche: sie waren neu, als wir sie füllten, und nun sind sie zerrissen; und da sind unsere Kleider und Sandalen: sie sind infolge der weiten Reise gänzlich abgenutzt,
14 And the chiefs took of their provision, and asked not [counsel of] the Lord.
Da nahmen die Männer etwas von ihrem Mundvorrat; aber den Bescheid Jahwes holten sie nicht ein.
15 And Joshua made peace with them, and they made a covenant with them to preserve them; and the princes of the congregation sware to them.
Und Josua sicherte ihnen Unverletzlichkeit zu und traf mit ihnen ein friedliches Abkommen, sie am Leben lassen zu wollen. Und die Fürsten der Gemeinde schworen ihnen Verschonung zu.
16 And it came to pass three days after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were near neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.
Als aber drei Tage verflossen waren, nachdem man ein friedliches Abkommen mit ihnen getroffen hatte, da vernahm man, daß sie aus der Nähe waren und mitten unter ihnen wohnten.
17 And the children of Israel departed and came to their cities; and their cities [were] Gabaon, and Kephira, and Berot, and the cities of Jarin.
Da brachen die Israeliten auf und gelangten am dritten Tage zu ihren Ortschaften; ihre Ortschaften aber waren Gibeon, Kaphira, Beeroth und Kirjath Jearim.
18 Land the children of Israel fought not with them, because all the princes sware to them by the Lord God of Israel; and all the congregation murmured at the princes.
Und die Israeliten thaten ihnen nichts zuleide, denn die Fürsten der Gemeinde hatten ihnen bei Jahwe, dem Gott Israels, Verschonung zugeschworen. Da murrte die ganze Gemeinde gegen die Fürsten.
19 And the princes said to all the congregation: We have sworn to them by the Lord God of Israel, and now we shall not be able to touch them.
Da sprachen die Fürsten zu der ganzen Gemeinde: Wir haben ihnen bei Jahwe, dem Gott Israels, geschworen; deshalb dürfen wir sie nicht antasten.
20 This we will do; take them alive, and we will preserve them: so there shall not be wrath against us by reason of the oath which we swore to them.
Folgendes wollen wir ihnen anthun und ihnen das Leben schenken, damit uns nicht ein Gotteszorn treffe wegen des Eids, den wir ihnen geschworen haben.
21 They shall live, and shall be hewers of wood and drawers of water to all the congregation, as the princes said to them.
Da sprachen die Fürsten zu ihnen: Sie sollen am Leben bleiben! Und sie dienten der ganzen Gemeinde als Holzhauer und Wasserschöpfer, wie die Fürsten ihnen angekündigt hatten.
22 And Joshua called them together and said to them, Why have ye deceived me, saying, We live very far from you; whereas ye are fellow-countrymen of those who dwell among us?
Da ließ sie Josua rufen und sprach zu ihnen also: Warum habt ihr uns getäuscht, indem ihr behauptet: Wir wohnen weit von euch entfernt, während ihr doch mitten unter uns wohnt?
23 And now ye are cursed: there shall not fail of you a slave, or a hewer of wood, or a drawer of water to me and my God.
Darum sollt ihr verflucht sein und sollt nie aufhören, Sklaven zu sein und zwar Holzhauer und Wasserschöpfer für das Haus meines Gottes!
24 And they answered Joshua, saying, It was reported to us what the Lord thy God charged his servant Moses, to give you this land, and to destroy us and all that dwelt on it from before you; and we feared very much for our lives because of you, and [therefore] we did this thing.
Da erwiderten sie Josua und sprachen: Es wurde uns, deinen Knechten, berichtet, welche Anweisung Jahwe, dein Gott, seinem Knechte Mose gegeben hat, daß er euch das ganze Land verleihen und alle Bewohner des Landes vor euch vertilgen wolle. Da fürchteten wir sehr, ihr möchtet uns das Leben nehmen; darum handelten wir so.
25 And now, behold, we [are] in your power; do to us as it is pleasing to you, and as it seems [good] to you.
Nun aber sind wir ja in deiner Gewalt; verfahre mit uns, wie es dir recht und gut dünkt.
26 And they did so to them; and Joshua rescued them in that day out of the hands of the children of Israel, and they did not slay them.
Da verfuhr Josua mit ihnen auf solche Weise und schützte sie vor den Israeliten, daß sie sie nicht umbrachten.
27 And Joshua made them in that day hewers of wood and drawers of water to the whole congregation, and for the altar of God: therefore the inhabitants of Gabaon became hewers of wood and drawers of water for the altar of God until this day, even for the place which the Lord should choose.
Und Josua machte sie damals zu Holzhauern und Wasser schöpfern für die Gemeinde und für den Altar Jahwes, und so ist es geblieben bis auf den heutigen Tag, an der Stätte, die er erwählen würde.
