Exodus 32
1 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people combined against Aaron, and said to him, Arise and make us gods who shall go before us; for this Moses, the man who brought us forth out of the land of Egypt—we do not know what is become of him.
Cependant le peuple voyant le retard que mettait Moïse à descendre de la montagne, et s’étant assemblé contre Aaron, dit: Lève-toi, fais-nous des dieux qui nous précèdent; car pour Moïse, cet homme qui nous a retirés de la terre d’Egypte, nous ignorons ce qui lui est arrivé.
2 And Aaron says to them, Take off the golden ear-rings which are in the ears of your wives and daughters, and bring them to me.
Et Aaron leur répondit: Otez les pendants d’or des oreilles de vos femmes, de vos fils et de vos filles, et apportez-les-moi.
3 And all the people took off the golden ear-rings that were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron.
Et le peuple fit ce qu’il avait commandé, portant les pendants d’oreilles à Aaron.
4 And he received them at their hands, and formed them with a graving tool; and he made them a molten calf, and said, These [are] thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
Lorsque celui-ci les eut reçus, il les jeta en fonte, et il en fit un veau de fonte: alors ils dirent: Voici tes dieux, ô Israël, qui t’ont retiré de la terre d’Egypte.
5 And Aaron having seen it built an altar before it, and Aaron made proclamation saying, To-morrow [is] a feast of the Lord.
Ce qu’ayant vu Aaron, il bâtit un autel devant le veau, et il cria par la voix d’un héraut: Demain est une solennité du Seigneur.
6 And having risen early on the morrow, he offered whole burnt-offerings, and offered a peace-offering; and the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
Et, se levant le matin, ils offrirent des holocaustes et des hosties pacifiques, et le peuple s’assit pour manger et pour boire, et ils se levèrent pour jouer.
7 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Go quickly, descend hence, for thy people whom thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt have transgressed;
Mais le Seigneur parla à Moïse, disant: Va, descends: il a péché, ton peuple que tu as retiré de la terre d’Egypte.
8 they have quickly gone out of the way which thou commandedst; they have made for themselves a calf, and worshipped it, and sacrificed to it, and said,
Ils se sont bientôt écartés de la voie que tu leur as montrée: ils se sont fait un veau de fonte, et ils l’ont adoré; puis lui immolant des hosties, ils ont dit: Voici tes dieux, ô Israël, qui t’ont retiré de la terre d’Egypte.
9 These are thy gods, O Israel, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
Et de nouveau le Seigneur dit à Moïse; Je vois que ce peuple est d’un cou roide;
10 And now let me alone, and I will be very angry with them and consume them, and I will make thee a great nation.
Laisse-moi, afin que ma fureur s’irrite contre eux, et que je les extermine; et je te ferai chef d’une grande nation.
11 And Moses prayed before the Lord God, and said, Wherefore, O Lord, art thou very angry with thy people, whom thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt with great strength, and with thy high arm?
Mais Moïse priait le Seigneur son Dieu, disant: Pourquoi, Seigneur, votre fureur s’indigne-telle contre votre peuple que vous avez retiré de la terre d’Egypte, avec une grande puissance, et une main forte?
12 [Take heed] lest at any time the Egyptians speak, saying, With evil intent he brought them out to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from off the earth; cease from thy wrathful anger, and be merciful to the sin of thy people,
Que les Egyptiens, je vous prie, ne disent pas: C’est par ruse qu’il les a retirés, afin de les tuer sur les montagnes, et les exterminer de la terre: que votre colère s’apaise et laissez-vous fléchir sur la méchanceté de votre peuple.
13 remembering Abraam and Isaac and Jacob thy servants, to whom thou hast sworn by thyself, and hast spoken to them, saying, I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of heaven for multitude, and all this land which thou spokest of to give to them, so that they shall possess it for ever.
Souvenez-vous d’Abraham, d’Isaac et d’Israël vos serviteurs auxquels vous avez juré par vous-même, disant: Je multiplierai votre postérité comme les étoiles du ciel; et toute cette terre dont je vous ai parlé, je la donnerai à votre postérité, et vous la posséderez toujours.
14 And the Lord was prevailed upon to preserve his people.
Et le Seigneur s’apaisa, et il ne fit pas à son peuple le mal qu’il avait dit.
15 And Moses turned and went down from the mountain, and the two tables of testimony were in his hands, tables of stone written on both their sides: they were written within and without.
Ainsi, Moïse retourna de la montagne, portant en sa main les deux tables du témoignage écrites des deux côtés,
16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing the writing of God written on the tables.
Et faites par l’œuvre de Dieu; l’écriture aussi, gravée sur les tables, était de Dieu.
17 And Joshua having heard the voice of the people crying, says to Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.
Or, Josué entendant le tumulte du peuple qui vociférait, dit à Moïse: On entend des cris de combat dans le camp.
18 And [Moses] says, It is not the voice of them that begin the battle, nor the voice of them that begin [the cry] of defeat, but the voice of them that begin [the banquet] of wine do I hear.
Moïse répondit: Ce n’est point là le cri de ceux qui s’exhortent au combat, ni les vociférations de ceux qui poussent leurs ennemis à la fuite; mais c’est la voix de gens qui chantent, que moi j’entends.
19 And when he drew nigh to the camp, he sees the calf and the dances; and Moses being very angry cast the two tables out of his hands, and broke them to pieces under the mountain.
Et lorsqu’il se fut approché du camp, il vit le veau et les danses; alors très irrité, il jeta les tables qu’il tenait à la main, et les rompit au pied de la montagne;
20 And having taken the calf which they made, he consumed it with fire, and ground it very small, and scattered it on the water, and made the children of Israel to drink it.
Puis saisissant le veau qu’ils avaient fait, il le brûla, et le brisa jusqu’à le réduire en poudre, qu’il répandit dans l’eau, et il donna de cette poudre à boire aux enfants d’Israël.
21 And Moses said to Aaron, What has this people done to thee, that thou hast brought upon them a great sin?
Il dit ensuite à Aaron: Que t’a fait ce peuple, pour que tu attirasses sur lui un très grand péché?
22 And Aaron said to Moses, Be not angry, [my] lord, for thou knowest the impetuosity of this people.
Aaron lui répondit: Que mon Seigneur ne soit pas indigné; car tu connais ce peuple; tu sais qu’il est porté au mal:
23 For they say to me, Make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this man Moses, who brought us out of Egypt, we do not know what is become of him.
Ils m’ont dit: Fais-nous des dieux qui nous précèdent; car pour ce Moïse qui nous a retirés de la terre d’Egypte, nous ne savons ce qui lui est arrivé.
24 And I said to them, If any one has golden ornaments, take them off; and they gave them me, and I cast them into the fire, and there came out this calf.
Moi, je leur ai dit: Qui de vous a de l’or? Ils l’ont apporté et me l’ont donné; et je l’ai jeté dans le feu, et il en est sorti ce veau.
25 And when Moses saw that the people was scattered, —for Aaron [had] scattered them [so as to be] a rejoicing to their enemies, —
Moïse voyant donc que le peuple avait été mis nu (car Aaron l’avait dépouillé pour une ignominie d’ordure, et l’avait mis nu au milieu de ses ennemis),
26 then stood Moses at the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the Lord's side? let him come to me. Then all the sons of Levi came to him.
Et se tenant à la porte du camp, dit: Si quelqu’un est au Seigneur, qu’il se joigne à moi. Et tous les enfants de Lévi se réunirent auprès de lui;
27 And he says to them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Put every one his sword on his thigh, and go through and return from gate to gate through the camp, and slay every one his brother, and every one his neighbour, and every one him that is nearest to him.
Il leur dit: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu d’Israël: Que chaque homme mette un glaive sur sa cuisse: allez et revenez d’une porte à l’autre au travers du camp, et que chacun lue son frère, son ami, et celui qui lui est le plus proche.
28 And the sons of Levi did as Moses spoke to them, and there fell of the people in that day to the [number of] three thousand men.
Et les fils de Lévi firent selon la parole de Moïse, et il tomba en ce jour-là environ vingt-trois mille hommes.
29 And Moses said to them, Ye have filled your hands this day to the Lord each one on his son or on his brother, so that blessing should be given to you.
Alors Moïse dit: Vous avez consacré aujourd’hui vos mains au Seigneur, chacun sur son fils et sur son frère, afin que vous soit donnée une bénédiction.
30 And it came to pass after the morrow [had begun], that Moses said to the people, Ye have sinned a great sin; and now I will go up to God, that I may make atonement for your sin.
Mais le jour suivant arrivé, Moïse parla au peuple, disant: Vous avez commis un très grand péché; je monterai vers le Seigneur, pour voir si je pourrai en quelque manière détourner le châtiment de votre crime.
31 And Moses returned to the Lord and said, I pray, O Lord, this people has sinned a great sin, and they have made for themselves golden gods.
Et étant retourné vers le Seigneur, il dit: Je vous conjure, ce peuple a commis un très grand péché, ils se sont fait des dieux d’or: ou remettez-leur cette faute,
32 And now if thou wilt forgive their sin, forgive [it]; and if not, blot me out of thy book, which thou hast written.
Ou, si vous ne le faites pas, effacez-moi de votre livre que vous avez écrit.
33 And the Lord said to Moses, If any one has sinned against me, I will blot them out of my book.
Le Seigneur lui répondit: Celui qui aura péché contre moi, je l’effacerai de mon livre:
34 And now go, descend, and lead this people into the place of which I spoke to thee: behold, my angel shall go before thy face; and in the day when I shall visit I will bring upon them their sin.
Mais toi, va, et conduis ce peuple où je t’ai dit: mon ange te précédera. Pour moi, au jour de la vengeance, je visiterai ce péché qu’ils ont commis.
35 And the Lord smote the people for the making the calf, which Aaron made.
Le Seigneur frappa donc le peuple pour le crime du veau qu’avait fait Aaron.
