Exodus 12
1 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying,
| ויאמר יהוה אל משה ואל אהרן בארץ מצרים לאמר |
2 This month [shall be] to you the beginning of months: it is the first to you among the months of the year.
| החדש הזה לכם ראש חדשים ראשון הוא לכם לחדשי השנה |
3 Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, On the tenth of this month let them take each man a lamb according to the houses of their families, every man a lamb for his household.
| דברו אל כל עדת ישראל לאמר בעשר לחדש הזה ויקחו להם איש שה לבית אבת--שה לבית |
4 And if they be few in a household, so that there are not enough for the lamb, he shall take with himself his neighbour that lives near to him, —as to the number of souls, every one according to that which suffices him shall make a reckoning for the lamb.
| ואם ימעט הבית מהיות משה--ולקח הוא ושכנו הקרב אל ביתו במכסת נפשת איש לפי אכלו תכסו על השה |
5 It shall be to you a lamb unblemished, a male of a year old: ye shall take it of the lambs and the kids.
| שה תמים זכר בן שנה יהיה לכם מן הכבשים ומן העזים תקחו |
6 And it shall be kept by you till the fourteenth of this month, and all the multitude of the congregation of the children of Israel shall kill it toward evening.
| והיה לכם למשמרת עד ארבעה עשר יום לחדש הזה ושחטו אתו כל קהל עדת ישראל--בין הערבים |
7 And they shall take of the blood, and shall put it on the two door-posts, and on the lintel, in the houses in which soever they shall eat them.
| ולקחו מן הדם ונתנו על שתי המזוזת ועל המשקוף--על הבתים אשר יאכלו אתו בהם |
8 And they shall eat the flesh in this night roast with fire, and they shall eat unleavened [bread] with bitter herbs.
| ואכלו את הבשר בלילה הזה צלי אש ומצות על מררים יאכלהו |
9 Ye shall not eat of it raw nor sodden in water, but only roast with fire, the head with the feet and the appurtenances.
| אל תאכלו ממנו נא ובשל מבשל במים כי אם צלי אש ראשו על כרעיו ועל קרבו |
10 Nothing shall be left of it till the morning, and a bone of it ye shall not break; but that which is left of it till the morning ye shall burn with fire.
| ולא תותירו ממנו עד בקר והנתר ממנו עד בקר באש תשרפו |
11 And thus shall ye eat it: your loins girded, and your sandals on your feet, and your staves in your hands, and ye shall eat it in haste. It is a passover to the Lord.
| וככה תאכלו אתו--מתניכם חגרים נעליכם ברגליכם ומקלכם בידכם ואכלתם אתו בחפזון פסח הוא ליהוה |
12 and I will go throughout the land of Egypt in that night, and will smite every first-born in the land of Egypt both man and beast, and on all the gods of Egypt will I execute vengeance: I [am] the Lord.
| ועברתי בארץ מצרים בלילה הזה והכיתי כל בכור בארץ מצרים מאדם ועד בהמה ובכל אלהי מצרים אעשה שפטים אני יהוה |
13 And the blood shall be for a sign to you on the houses in which ye are, and I will see the blood, and will protect you, and there shall not be on you the plague of destruction, when I smite in the land of Egypt.
| והיה הדם לכם לאת על הבתים אשר אתם שם וראיתי את הדם ופסחתי עלכם ולא יהיה בכם נגף למשחית בהכתי בארץ מצרים |
14 And this day shall be to you a memorial, and ye shall keep it a feast to the Lord through all your generations; ye shall keep it a feast for a perpetual ordinance.
| והיה היום הזה לכם לזכרון וחגתם אתו חג ליהוה לדרתיכם חקת עולם תחגהו |
15 Seven days ye shall eat unleavened bread, and from the first day ye shall utterly remove leaven from your houses: whoever shall eat leaven, that soul shall be utterly destroyed from Israel, from the first day until the seventh day.
| שבעת ימים מצות תאכלו--אך ביום הראשון תשביתו שאר מבתיכם כי כל אכל חמץ ונכרתה הנפש ההוא מישראל--מיום הראשן עד יום השבעי |
16 And the first day shall be called holy, and the seventh day shall be a holy convocation to you: ye shall do no servile work on them, only as many things as will [necessarily] be done by every soul, this only shall be done by you.
| וביום הראשון מקרא קדש וביום השביעי מקרא קדש יהיה לכם כל מלאכה לא יעשה בהם--אך אשר יאכל לכל נפש הוא לבדו יעשה לכם |
17 And ye shall keep this commandment, for on this day will I bring out your force out of the land of Egypt; and ye shall make this day a perpetual ordinance for you throughout your generations.
| ושמרתם את המצות כי בעצם היום הזה הוצאתי את צבאותיכם מארץ מצרים ושמרתם את היום הזה לדרתיכם--חקת עולם |
18 Beginning the fourteenth day of the first month, ye shall eat unleavened bread from evening, till the twenty-first day of the month, till evening.
| בראשן בארבעה עשר יום לחדש בערב תאכלו מצת עד יום האחד ועשרים לחדש--בערב |
19 Seven days leaven shall not be found in your houses; whosoever shall eat anything leavened, that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, both among the occupiers of the land and the original inhabitants.
| שבעת ימים--שאר לא ימצא בבתיכם כי כל אכל מחמצת ונכרתה הנפש ההוא מעדת ישראל--בגר ובאזרח הארץ |
20 Ye shall eat nothing leavened, but in every habitation of your ye shall eat unleavened bread.
| כל מחמצת לא תאכלו בכל מושבתיכם תאכלו מצות |
21 And Moses called all the elders of the children of Israel, and said to them, Go away and take to yourselves a lamb according to your kindreds, and slay the passover.
| ויקרא משה לכל זקני ישראל ויאמר אלהם משכו וקחו לכם צאן למשפחתיכם--ושחטו הפסח |
22 And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and having dipped it into some of the blood that is by the door, ye shall touch the lintel, and [shall put it] upon both door-posts, even of the blood which is by the door; but ye shall not go out every one from the door of his house till the morning.
| ולקחתם אגדת אזוב וטבלתם בדם אשר בסף והגעתם אל המשקוף ואל שתי המזוזת מן הדם אשר בסף ואתם לא תצאו איש מפתח ביתו--עד בקר |
23 And the Lord shall pass by to smite the Egyptians, and shall see the blood upon the lintel, and upon both the door-posts; and the Lord shall pass by the door, and shall not suffer the destroyer to enter into your houses to smite [you].
| ועבר יהוה לנגף את מצרים וראה את הדם על המשקוף ועל שתי המזוזת ופסח יהוה על הפתח ולא יתן המשחית לבא אל בתיכם לנגף |
24 And keep ye this thing as an ordinance for thyself and for thy children for ever.
| ושמרתם את הדבר הזה לחק לך ולבניך עד עולם |
25 And if ye should enter into the land, which the Lord shall give you, as he has spoken, keep this service.
| והיה כי תבאו אל הארץ אשר יתן יהוה לכם--כאשר דבר ושמרתם את העבדה הזאת |
26 And it shall come to pass, if your sons say to you, What is this service?
| והיה כי יאמרו אליכם בניכם מה העבדה הזאת לכם |
27 that ye shall say to them, This passover is a sacrifice to the Lord, as he defended the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, but delivered our houses.
| ואמרתם זבח פסח הוא ליהוה אשר פסח על בתי בני ישראל במצרים בנגפו את מצרים ואת בתינו הציל ויקד העם וישתחוו |
28 And the people bowed and worshipped. And the children of Israel departed and did as the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.
| וילכו ויעשו בני ישראל כאשר צוה יהוה את משה ואהרן כן עשו |
29 And it came to pass at midnight that the Lord smote all the first-born in the land of Egypt, from the first-born of Pharao that sat on the throne, to the first-born of the captive-maid in the dungeon, and the first-born of all cattle.
| ויהי בחצי הלילה ויהוה הכה כל בכור בארץ מצרים מבכר פרעה הישב על כסאו עד בכור השבי אשר בבית הבור וכל בכור בהמה |
30 And Pharao rose up by night, and his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in all the land of Egypt, for there was not a house in which there was not one dead.
| ויקם פרעה לילה הוא וכל עבדיו וכל מצרים ותהי צעקה גדלה במצרים כי אין בית אשר אין שם מת |
31 And Pharao called Moses and Aaron by night, and said to them, Rise and depart from my people, both ye and the children of Israel. Go and serve the Lord your God, even as ye say.
| ויקרא למשה ולאהרן לילה ויאמר קומו צאו מתוך עמי--גם אתם גם בני ישראל ולכו עבדו את יהוה כדברכם |
32 And take with you your sheep, and your oxen: bless me also, I pray you.
| גם צאנכם גם בקרכם קחו כאשר דברתם ולכו וברכתם גם אתי |
33 And the Egyptians constrained the people, so that they cast them out of the land with haste, for they said, We all shall die.
| ותחזק מצרים על העם למהר לשלחם מן הארץ כי אמרו כלנו מתים |
34 And the people took their dough before their meal was leavened, bound up [as it was] in their garments, on their shoulders.
| וישא העם את בצקו טרם יחמץ משארתם צררת בשמלתם על שכמם |
35 And the children of Israel did as Moses commanded them, and they asked of the Egyptians articles of silver and gold and apparel.
| ובני ישראל עשו כדבר משה וישאלו ממצרים כלי כסף וכלי זהב ושמלת |
36 And the Lord gave his people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, and they lent to them; and they spoiled the Egyptians.
| ויהוה נתן את חן העם בעיני מצרים--וישאלום וינצלו את מצרים |
37 And the children Israel departed from Ramesses to Socchoth, to [the full number of] six hundred thousand footmen, even men, besides the baggage.
| ויסעו בני ישראל מרעמסס סכתה כשש מאות אלף רגלי הגברים לבד מטף |
38 And a great mixed [company] went up with them, and sheep and oxen and very much cattle.
| וגם ערב רב עלה אתם וצאן ובקר מקנה כבד מאד |
39 And they baked the dough which they brought out of Egypt, unleavened cakes, for it had not been leavened; for the Egyptians cast them out, and they could not remain, neither did they prepare provision for themselves for the journey.
| ויאפו את הבצק אשר הוציאו ממצרים עגת מצות--כי לא חמץ כי גרשו ממצרים ולא יכלו להתמהמה וגם צדה לא עשו להם |
40 And the sojourning of the children of Israel, while they sojourned in the land of Egypt and the land of Chanaan, [was] four hundred and thirty years.
| ומושב בני ישראל אשר ישבו במצרים--שלשים שנה וארבע מאות שנה |
41 And it came to pass after the four hundred and thirty years, all the forces of the Lord came forth out of the land of Egypt by night.
| ויהי מקץ שלשים שנה וארבע מאות שנה ויהי בעצם היום הזה יצאו כל צבאות יהוה מארץ מצרים |
42 It is a watch kept to the Lord, so that he should bring them out of the land of Egypt; that very night is a watch kept to the Lord, so that it should be to all the children of Israel to their generations.
| ליל שמרים הוא ליהוה להוציאם מארץ מצרים הוא הלילה הזה ליהוה שמרים לכל בני ישראל לדרתם |
43 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, This is the law of the passover: no stranger shall eat of it.
| ויאמר יהוה אל משה ואהרן זאת חקת הפסח כל בן נכר לא יאכל בו |
44 And every slave or servant bought with money—him thou shalt circumcise, and then shall he eat of it.
| וכל עבד איש מקנת כסף--ומלתה אתו אז יאכל בו |
45 A sojourner or hireling shall not eat of it.
| תושב ושכיר לא יאכל בו |
46 In one house shall it be eaten, and ye shall not carry of the flesh out from the house; and a bone of it ye shall not break.
| בבית אחד יאכל לא תוציא מן הבית מן הבשר חוצה ועצם לא תשברו בו |
47 All the congregation of the children of Israel shall keep it.
| כל עדת ישראל יעשו אתו |
48 And if any proselyte shall come to you to keep the passover to the Lord, thou shalt circumcise every male of him, and then shall he approach to sacrifice it, and he shall be even as the original inhabitant of the land; no uncircumcised person shall eat of it.
| וכי יגור אתך גר ועשה פסח ליהוה--המול לו כל זכר ואז יקרב לעשתו והיה כאזרח הארץ וכל ערל לא יאכל בו |
49 There shall be one law to the native, and to the proselyte coming among you.
| תורה אחת יהיה לאזרח ולגר הגר בתוככם |
50 And the children of Israel did as the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron for them, so they did.
| ויעשו כל בני ישראל כאשר צוה יהוה את משה ואת אהרן כן עשו |
51 And it came to pass in that day that the Lord brought out the children of Israel from the land of Egypt with their forces.
| ויהי בעצם היום הזה הוציא יהוה את בני ישראל מארץ מצרים--על צבאתם |
