Deuteronomy 20
1 And if thou shouldest go forth to war against thine enemies, and shouldest see horse, and rider, and a people more numerous than thyself; thou shalt not be afraid of them, for the Lord thy God [is] with thee, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
Lorsque tu sortiras pour combattre tes ennemis, et que tu verras des chevaux, des chars et un peuple plus nombreux que toi, tu ne les craindras pas, car l'Éternel, ton Dieu, qui t'a fait monter du pays d'Égypte, est avec toi.
2 And it shall come to pass whenever thou shalt draw nigh to battle, that the priest shall draw nigh and speak to the people, and shall say to them,
Lorsque vous approcherez de la bataille, le prêtre s'approchera et parlera au peuple,
3 Hear, O Israel; ye are going this day to battle against your enemies: let not your heart faint, fear not, neither be confounded, neither turn aside from their face.
et il lui dira: « Écoute, Israël, tu t'approches aujourd'hui de la bataille contre tes ennemis. Que ton cœur ne s'affaiblisse pas! N'aie pas peur, ne tremble pas et n'aie pas peur d'eux;
4 For [it is] the Lord your God who advances with you, to fight with you against your enemies, [and] to save you.
car Yahvé ton Dieu est celui qui marche avec toi, pour combattre pour toi contre tes ennemis, pour te sauver. »
5 And the scribes shall speak to the people, saying, What man [is] he that has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the war, and another man dedicate it.
Les officiers parleront au peuple, en disant: « Quel est l'homme qui a construit une maison neuve et qui ne l'a pas consacrée? Qu'il aille et retourne dans sa maison, de peur qu'il ne meure dans la bataille et qu'un autre ne la dédie.
6 And what man [is] he that has planted a vineyard, and not been made merry with it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man be made merry with it.
Quel est l'homme qui a planté une vigne, et qui n'en a pas utilisé le fruit? Qu'il s'en aille et retourne dans sa maison, de peur qu'il ne meure dans la bataille, et qu'un autre n'en utilise le fruit.
7 And what man [is] he that has betrothed a wife, and has not taken her? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.
Quel est l'homme qui s'est engagé à épouser une femme, et qui ne l'a pas prise? Qu'il aille et retourne dans sa maison, de peur qu'il ne meure dans la bataille et qu'un autre homme ne la prenne. »
8 And the scribes shall speak further to the people, and say, What man [is] he that fears and is cowardly in his heart? Let him go and return to his house, lest he make the heart of his brother fail, as his own.
Les officiers parleront encore au peuple, et ils diront: « Quel est l'homme qui a peur et qui est pusillanime? Qu'il s'en aille et retourne dans sa maison, de peur que le cœur de son frère ne se fonde comme son cœur. »
9 And it shall come to pass when the scribes shall have ceased speaking to the people, that they shall appoint generals of the army to be leaders of the people.
Lorsque les officiers auront fini de parler au peuple, ils nommeront des chefs d'armée à la tête du peuple.
10 And if thou shalt draw nigh to a city to overcome them by war, then call them out peaceably.
Lorsque vous vous approchez d'une ville pour la combattre, annoncez-lui la paix.
11 If then they should answer peaceably to thee, and open to thee, it shall be that all the people found in it shall be tributary and subject to thee.
Si elle te donne une réponse de paix et s'ouvre à toi, tous les habitants qui s'y trouvent deviendront tes travailleurs forcés et te serviront.
12 But if they will not hearken to thee, but wage war against thee, thou shalt invest it;
S'il ne veut pas faire la paix avec toi, mais te faire la guerre, tu l'assiégeras.
13 until the Lord thy God shall deliver it into thy hands, and thou shalt smite every male of it with the edge of the sword:
Lorsque Yahvé, ton Dieu, la livrera entre tes mains, tu en frapperas tous les mâles du tranchant de l'épée.
14 except the women and the stuff: and all the cattle, and whatsoever shall be in the city, and all the plunder thou shalt take as spoil for thyself, and shalt eat all the plunder of thine enemies whom the Lord thy God gives thee.
Mais tu prendras pour toi les femmes, les petits enfants, le bétail, tout ce qui se trouve dans la ville et tout son butin. Tu pourras utiliser le butin de tes ennemis, que Yahvé ton Dieu t'a donné.
15 Thus shalt thou do to all the cities that are very far off from thee, not [being] of the cities of these nations which the Lord thy God gives thee to inherit their land.
Tu feras ainsi à toutes les villes qui sont très éloignées de toi et qui ne font pas partie des villes de ces peuples.
16 [Of these] ye shall not take any thing alive;
Mais parmi les villes de ces peuples que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne en héritage, tu ne sauveras rien de ce qui respire,
17 but ye shall surely curse them, the Chettite, and the Amorite, and the Chananite, and the Pherezite, and the Evite, and the Jebusite, and the Gergesite; as the Lord thy God commanded thee:
mais tu les dévoueras par interdit, le Héthien, l'Amoréen, le Cananéen, le Phérézien, le Hévien et le Jébusien, comme l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te l'a ordonné,
18 that they may not teach you to do all their abominations, which they did to their gods, and [so] ye should sin before the Lord your God.
afin qu'ils ne t'apprennent pas à suivre toutes leurs abominations, qu'ils ont faites pour leurs dieux, et que tu ne pèches pas contre l'Éternel, ton Dieu.
19 And if thou shouldest besiege a city many days to prevail against it by war to take it, thou shalt not destroy its trees, by applying an iron tool to them, but thou shalt eat of it, and shalt not cut it down: Is the tree that is in the field a man, to enter before thee into the work of the siege?
Lorsque tu assiégeras une ville pendant une longue période, en lui faisant la guerre pour la prendre, tu ne détruiras pas ses arbres en maniant la hache contre eux, car tu pourras en manger. Tu ne les couperas pas, car l'arbre des champs est-il un homme, pour que tu l'assailles?
20 But the tree which thou knowest to be not fruit-bearing, this thou shalt destroy and cut down; and thou shalt construct a mound against the city, which makes war against thee, until it be delivered up.
Seuls les arbres dont tu sais qu'ils ne sont pas destinés à la nourriture, tu les détruiras et tu les couperas. Tu construiras des remparts contre la ville qui te fait la guerre, jusqu'à ce qu'elle tombe.
