Deuteronomy 11
1 Therefore thou shalt love the Lord thy God, and shalt observe his appointments, and his ordinances, and his commandments, and his judgments, always.
Tu aimeras donc l’Éternel, ton Dieu, et tu observeras ses lois, ses statuts, ses préceptes, en tous temps.
2 And ye shall know this day; for [I speak] not to your children, who know not and have not seen the discipline of the Lord thy God, and his wonderful works, and his strong hand, and his high arm,
Reconnaissez en ce jour, car ce n’est pas à vos enfants que je parle, eux qui ne connaissent pas, qui n’ont point vu, reconnaissez les enseignements de l’Éternel, votre Dieu, sa grandeur, sa main puissante et son bras étendu;
3 and his miracles, and his wonders, which he wrought in the midst of Egypt on Pharao king of Egypt, and all his land;
les signes et les œuvres qu’il a opérés au sein de l’Egypte, sur Pharaon, roi d’Egypte, et sur tout son pays;
4 and what he did to the host of the Egyptians, and to their chariots, and their cavalry, and their host; how he made the water of the Red Sea to overwhelm the face of them as they pursued after you, and the Lord destroyed them until this day;
ce qu’il a fait à l’armée égyptienne, à ses chars et à sa cavalerie, alors qu’il les submergea sous les eaux de la mer des Joncs, quand ils vous poursuivaient, et que l’Éternel les fit disparaître jusqu’à ce jour;
5 and all the things which he did to you in the wilderness until ye came into this place;
ce qu’il vous a fait dans le désert, jusqu’à votre arrivée en ce lieu;
6 and all the things that he did to Dathan and Abiron the sons of Eliab the son of Ruben, whom the earth opening her mouth swallowed up, and their houses, and their tents, and all their substance that was with them, in the midst of all Israel:
ce qu’il a fait à l’égard de Dathan et d’Abirâm, fils d’Elïab, descendant de Ruben, quand la terre ouvrit son sein et les engloutit avec leurs familles et leurs tentes, et tous leurs adhérents, à la vue d’Israël entier.
7 for your eyes have seen all the mighty works of the Lord, which he wrought among you to-day.
Ce sont vos propres yeux qui ont vu toutes ces grandes œuvres opérées par l’Éternel!
8 And ye shall keep all his commandments, as many as I command thee to-day, that ye may live, and be multiplied, and that ye may go in and inherit the land, into which ye go across Jordan to inherit it:
Gardez donc tous les commandements que je vous donne aujourd’hui; alors vous serez forts, et vous obtiendrez la possession du pays où vous allez, pour le conquérir.
9 that ye may live long upon the land, which the Lord sware to your fathers to give to them, and to their seed after them, a land flowing with milk and honey.
Alors aussi vous vivrez de longs jours sur cette terre que l’Éternel a juré à vos ancêtres de donner à eux et à leur postérité, terre où ruissellent le lait et le miel.
10 For the land into which thou goest to inherit it, is not as the land of Egypt, whence ye came out, whensoever they sow the seed, and water it with their feet, as a garden of herbs:
Car le pays où tu vas pour le conquérir ne ressemble point au pays d’Egypte, d’où vous êtes sortis; là, tu devais semer ta graine et l’humecter à l’aide du pied, comme en un jardin potager.
11 but the land into which thou goest to inherit it, is a land of mountains and plains; it shall drink water of the rain of heaven.
Mais le pays que vous allez conquérir est un pays de montagnes et de vallées, abreuvé par les pluies du ciel;
12 A land which the Lord thy God surveys continually, the eyes of the Lord thy God are upon it from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.
un pays sur lequel veille l’Éternel, ton Dieu, et qui est constamment sous l’œil du Seigneur, depuis le commencement de l’année jusqu’à la fin.
13 Now if ye will indeed hearken to all the commands which I charge thee this day, to love the Lord thy God, and to serve him with all thy heart, and with all thy soul,
Or, si vous êtes dociles aux lois que je vous impose en ce jour, aimant l’Éternel, votre Dieu, le servant de tout votre cœur et de toute votre âme,
14 then he shall give to thy land the early and latter rain in its season, and thou shalt bring in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.
je donnerai à votre pays la pluie opportune, pluie de printemps et pluie d’arrière-saison, et tu récolteras ton blé, et ton vin et ton huile.
15 And he shall give food in thy fields to thy cattle; and when thou hast eaten and art full,
Je ferai croître l’herbe dans ton champ pour ton bétail, et tu vivras dans l’abondance.
16 take heed to thyself that thy heart be not puffed up, and ye transgress, and serve other gods, and worship them:
Prenez garde que votre cœur ne cède à la séduction, que vous ne deveniez infidèles, au point de servir d’autres dieux et de leur rendre hommage.
17 and the Lord be angry with you, and restrain the heaven; and there shall not be rain, and the earth shall not yield its fruit, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land, which the Lord has given you.
La colère du Seigneur s’allumerait contre vous, il défendrait au ciel de répandre la pluie, et la terre vous refuserait son tribut, et vous disparaîtriez bientôt du bon pays que l’Éternel vous destine.
18 And ye shall store these words in your heart and in your soul, and ye shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and it shall be fixed before your eyes.
Imprimez donc mes paroles dans votre cœur et dans votre pensée; attachez-les, comme symbole, sur votre bras, et portez-les en fronteau entre vos yeux.
19 And ye shall teach them to your children, so as to speak about them when thou sittest in the house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou sleepest, and when thou risest up.
Enseignez-les à vos enfants en les répétant sans cesse, quand tu seras à la maison ou en voyage, soit que tu te couches, soit que tu te lèves.
20 And ye shall write them on the lintels of your houses, and on your gates;
Inscris-les sur les poteaux de ta maison et sur tes portes.
21 that your days may be long, and the days of your children, upon the land which the Lord sware to your fathers to give to them, as the days of heaven upon the earth.
Alors la durée de vos jours et des jours de vos enfants, sur le sol que l’Éternel a juré à vos pères de leur donner, égalera la durée du ciel au-dessus de la terre.
22 And it shall come to pass that if ye will indeed hearken to all these commands, which I charge thee to observe this day, to love the Lord our God, and to walk in all his ways, and to cleave close to him;
Oui, si vous observez bien toute cette loi que je vous prescris d’accomplir, aimant l’Éternel, votre Dieu, marchant toujours dans ses voies et lui demeurant fidèles,
23 then the Lord shall cast out all these nations before you, and ye shall inherit great nations and stronger than yourselves.
l’Éternel repoussera toutes ces nations devant vous, et vous déposséderez des peuples plus grands et plus forts que vous.
24 Every place whereon the sole of your foot shall tread shall be your; from the wilderness and Antilibanus, and from the great river, the river Euphrates, even as far as the west sea shall be your coasts.
Toute région où se posera la plante de vos pieds, sera à vous: depuis le désert jusqu’au Liban, depuis le fleuve, le fleuve de l’Euphrate, jusqu’à la mer occidentale, s’étendra votre territoire.
25 No one shall stand before you; and the Lord your God will put the fear of you and the dread of you on the face of all the land, on which ye shall tread, as he told you.
Nul ne pourra tenir devant vous; l’Éternel, votre Dieu, répandra votre terreur sur tous les lieux où vous porterez vos pas, ainsi qu’il vous l’a déclaré.
26 Behold, I set before you this day the blessing and the curse;
Voyez, je vous propose en ce jour, d’une part, la bénédiction, la malédiction de l’autre:
27 the blessing, if ye hearken to the commands of the Lord your God, all that I command you this day;
la bénédiction, quand vous obéirez aux commandements de l’Éternel, votre Dieu, que je vous impose aujourd’hui;
28 and the curse, if ye do not hearken to the commands of the Lord our God, as many as I command you this day, and ye wander from the way which I have commanded you, having gone to serve other gods, which ye know not.
et la malédiction, si vous n’obéissez pas aux commandements de l’Éternel, votre Dieu, si vous quittez la voie que je vous trace aujourd’hui, pour suivre des dieux étrangers, que vous ne connaissez point.
29 And it shall come to pass when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land into which thou goest over to inherit it, then thou shalt put blessing on mount Garizin, and the curse upon mount Gaebal.
Or, quand l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’aura installé dans le pays où tu vas pour le conquérir, tu proclameras la bénédiction sur le mont Garizim, la malédiction sur le mont Hébal.
30 Lo! are not these beyond Jordan, behind, westward in the land of Chanaan, which lies westward near Golgol, by the high oak?
Ces montagnes sont au delà du Jourdain, en arrière, dans la direction du couchant, dans la province des Cananéens habitants de la plaine, vis-à-vis de Ghilgal, près des chênes de Moré.
31 For ye are passing over Jordan, to go in and inherit the land, which the Lord our God gives you to inherit always, and ye shall dwell in it.
Car, vous allez passer le Jourdain pour marcher à la conquête du pays que l’Éternel, votre Dieu, vous donne; vous en prendrez possession et y demeurerez.
32 And ye shall take heed to do all his ordinances, and these judgments, as many as I set before you to-day.
Appliquez-vous alors à observer toutes les lois et les statuts que je vous expose en ce jour.
