Kings I 8
1 And it came to pass when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
Et Samuel devint vieux, et il institua ses fils juges d'Israël.
2 And these [are] the names of his sons; Joel the first-born, and the name of the second Abia, judges in Bersabee.
Voici les noms de ces fils: le premier-né s'appelait Joël, le second Abia; ils jugeaient en Bersabée.
3 And his sons did not walk in his way; and they turned aside after gain, and took gifts, and perverted judgments.
Mais ses fils ne marchèrent pas en ses voies; ils en furent détournés par l'intérêt; ils acceptèrent des présents et ils firent dévier la justice.
4 And the men of Israel gather themselves together, and come to Armathaim to Samuel,
En conséquence, les fils d'Israël se rassemblèrent; ils allèrent trouver Samuel en Armathem,
5 and they said to him, Behold, thou art grown old, and thy sons walk not in thy way; and now set over us a king to judge us, as also the other nations [have].
Et ils lui dirent: Écoute, tu es devenu vieux, et tes fils ne marchent pas en tes voies; donne-nous donc un roi comme en ont les autres nations, afin qu'il nous juge.
6 And the thing [was] evil in the eyes of Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us: and Samuel prayed to the Lord.
Cette parole parut mauvaise à Samuel, lorsqu'ils dirent: Donne-nous un roi, afin qu'il nous juge; et Samuel pria le Seigneur.
7 And the Lord said to Samuel, Hear the voice of the people, in whatever they shall say to thee; for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me from reigning over them.
Or, le Seigneur dit à Samuel: Écoute la voix du peuple, fais comme ils te diront; ce n'est point toi, c'est moi qu'ils ont méprisé et dont ils ne veulent pas pour régner sur eux.
8 According to all their doings which they have done to me, from the day that I brought them out of Egypt until this day, even [as] they have deserted me, and served other gods, so they do also to thee.
C'est ce qu'ils ont toujours fait à mon égard depuis le jour où je les ai tirés de l'Égypte jusqu'à ce moment: ils m'ont abandonné, et ils ont servi d'autres dieux; ils te traitent de même maintenant.
9 And now hearken to their voice; only thou shalt solemnly testify to them, and thou shalt describe to them the manner of the king who shall reign over them.
Obéis donc à leur voix; seulement prends-les à témoin, et prends-les à témoin pour leur faire connaître les droits du roi qui règnera sur eux.
10 And Samuel spoke every word of the Lord to the people who asked of him a king.
Et Samuel répéta toutes les paroles du Seigneur au peuple qui lui demandait un roi.
11 And he said, This shall be the manner of the king that shall rule over you: he shall take your sons, and put them in his chariots, and among his horsemen, and running before his chariots,
Il leur dit: Voici quels seront les droits du roi qui régnera sur vous: Il prendra vos fils, et il les placera sur ses chars de guerre ou parmi ses cavaliers; il les fera courir devant ses chars.
12 and [his manner shall be] to make them to himself captains of hundreds and captains of thousands; and to reap his harvest, and gather his vintage, and prepare his instruments of war, and the implements of his chariots.
Il s'en fera des centeniers et des chefs de mille hommes; il leur fera faire sa moisson et sa vendange; il leur fera fabriquer des armes de guerre, et les pièces diverses de ses chariots.
13 And he will take your daughters to be perfumers, and cooks, and bakers.
Il prendra vos filles pour préparer ses parfums, cuire son pain, et faire sa cuisine.
14 And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your good oliveyards, and give them to his servants.
Il prendra vos champs, vos vignes, vos meilleurs oliviers, pour les donner à ses serviteurs.
15 And he will take the tithe of your seeds and your vineyards, and give [it] to his eunuchs, and to his servants.
Il prendra la dîme de vos grains et de votre vendange, pour la donner à ses eunuques et à ses esclaves.
16 And he will take your servants, and your handmaids, and your good herds and your asses, and will take the tenth of them for his works.
Il prendra vos serviteurs, vos servantes, vos bœufs et vos ânes; il prendra la dîme de tous les fruits de vos travaux.
17 And he will tithe your flocks; and ye shall be his servants.
Il prendra la dîme de votre bétail, et vous serez ses esclaves.
18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king whom ye have chosen to yourselves, and the Lord shall not hear you in those days, because ye have chosen to yourselves a king.
Et, ce jour-là, vous crierez à cause du roi que vous vous serez choisi; et, ce jour-là, le Seigneur ne vous écoutera point, parce que c'est vous-mêmes qui aurez voulu ce roi pour vous.
19 But the people would not hearken to Samuel; and they said to him, Nay, but there shall be a king over us.
Mais le peuple ne voulut pas écouter Samuel, et il dit: Nullement, mais nous aurons un roi,
20 An we also will be like all the nations; and our king shall judge us, and shall go out before us, and fight our battles.
Nous serons comme toutes les nations; notre roi nous jugera, il marchera à notre tête et il dirigera nos guerres.
21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and spoke them in the ears of the Lord.
Et Samuel écouta tous les discours du peuple, et il les transmit au Seigneur.
22 And the Lord said to Samuel, Hearken to their voice, and appoint them a king. And Samuel said to the men of Israel, Let each man depart to his city.
Et le Seigneur dit à Samuel: Obéis-leur, et donne-leur un roi. Alors, Samuel dit aux fils d'Israël: Que chacun s'en retourne en sa ville.
