Kings I 17
1 And the Philistines gather their armies to battle, and gather themselves to Socchoth of Judaea, and encamp between Socchoth and Azeca Ephermen.
Da boten die Philister ihre Heere zum Kriege auf, sammelten sich bei Socho, das zu Juda gehört, und schlugen ein Lager zwischen Socho und Aseka bei Ephes-Dammim auf.
2 And Saul and the men of Israel gather together, and they encamp in the valley, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.
Saul aber und die Israeliten sammelten sich und bezogen ein Lager im Terebinthental und rüsteten sich zum Kampf gegen die Philister;
3 And the Philistines stand on the mountain on one side, and Israel stands on the mountain on the other side, and the valley was between them.
die Philister standen am Berge jenseits, die Israeliten am Berge diesseits, so daß das Tal zwischen ihnen lag.
4 And there went forth a mighty man out of the army of the Philistines, Goliath, by name, out of Geth, his height [was] four cubits and a span.
Da trat aus den Reihen der Philister der Vorkämpfer namens Goliath hervor, ein Gathiter, der sechs Ellen und eine Spanne hoch war;
5 And [he had] a helmet upon his head, and he wore a breastplate of chain armour; and the weight of his breastplate [was] five thousand shekels of brass and iron.
er trug einen ehernen Helm auf dem Kopfe und hatte einen Schuppenpanzer an, dessen Gewicht fünftausend Schekel Erz betrug.
6 And greaves of grass [were] upon his legs, and a brazen target [was] between his shoulders.
An den Beinen trug er eherne Schienen und zwischen den Schultern einen ehernen Wurfspieß;
7 And the staff of his spear [was] like a weaver's beam, and the spear's head [was formed] of six hundred shekels of iron; and his armour-bearer went before him.
der Schaft seines Speeres war wie ein Weberbaum, und die Spitze seines Speeres bestand aus sechshundert Schekel Eisen; sein Schildträger ging vor ihm her.
8 And he stood and cried to the army of Israel, and said to them, Why are ye come forth to set yourselves in battle array against us? Am not I a Philistine, and ye Hebrews of Saul? Choose for yourselves a man, and let him come down to me.
Er stellte sich hin und rief den in Reihen stehenden Israeliten die Worte zu: »Warum zieht ihr aus, euch in Schlachtordnung aufzustellen? Bin ich nicht da, der Philister, und ihr, die Knechte Sauls? Wählt euch einen Mann aus, der komme zu mir herab!
9 And if he shall be able to fight against me, and shall smite me, then will we be your servants: but if I should prevail and smite him, ye shall be our servants, and serve us.
Vermag er mich im Kampfe zu bestehen und erschlägt er mich, so wollen wir euch untertan sein; bin aber ich ihm überlegen und erschlage ich ihn, so sollt ihr uns untertan sein und müßt uns dienen!«
10 And the Philistine said, Behold, I have defied the armies of Israel this very day: give me a man, and we will both of us fight in single combat.
Dann fügte der Philister noch hinzu: »Heute habe ich den in Reihen stehenden Israeliten Hohn geboten: stellt mir einen Mann, daß wir miteinander kämpfen!«
11 And Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, and they were dismayed, and greatly terrified.
Als Saul und alle Israeliten diese Worte des Philisters hörten, erschraken sie und fürchteten sich sehr.
12 [And David son of an Ephrathite said, this Eplarathite was of Bethleem Juda, and his name was Jessae, and he had eight sons. And the man passed for an old man among men in the days of Saul. ]
David aber war der Sohn jenes Ephrathiten aus Bethlehem in Juda, der Isai hieß und acht Söhne hatte und zur Zeit Sauls schon ein älterer, in den Jahren vorgerückter Mann war.
13 [And the three elder sons of Jessae went and followed Saul to the war, and the ] [names of his sons that went to the war were, Eliab his first-born, and his second Aminadab, and his third son Samma. ]
Die drei ältesten Söhne Isais waren unter Saul in den Krieg gezogen; von diesen seinen drei Söhnen, die ins Feld gezogen waren, hieß der älteste Eliab, der zweite Abinadab, der dritte Samma;
14 [And David himself ] [was the younger son, and the three elder followed Saul. ]
David aber war der jüngste. Da die drei ältesten unter Saul in den Krieg gezogen waren,
15 [And David departed and returned from Saul, ] [to feed his father’s sheep in Bethleem; ]
ging David ab und zu von Sauls Hofe heim, um in Bethlehem das Kleinvieh seines Vaters zu hüten.
16 [And the Philistine advanced morning and evening, and stood up forty days. ]
Der Philister aber trat morgens und abends auf und stellte sich vierzig Tage lang (vor die Israeliten) hin. –
17 [And Jessae said to David, Take now to thy brethren an ephah of this meal, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp and give them to thy brothers. ]
Da sagte Isai (eines Tages) zu seinem Sohne David: »Nimm doch für deine Brüder ein Epha von diesem gerösteten Getreide und diese zehn Brote und bringe sie schnell zu deinen Brüdern ins Lager;
18 [And thou shalt carry to the captain of the thousand ] [these ten cheeses of milk, and thou shalt see how thy brethren fare, and learn what they want. ]
diese zehn frischen Käse aber nimm für den Hauptmann der Tausendschaft mit und erkundige dich nach dem Befinden deiner Brüder und laß dir ein Pfand von ihnen mitgeben!«
19 [And Saul himself and all the men of Israel were in the valley of the Oak, warring with the Philistines. ]
Saul und sie und alle Israeliten befanden sich nämlich im Terebinthental im Kriege mit den Philistern.
20 [And David rose early in the morning, and left the sheep to a keeper, and took and went as Jessae commanded him, and he came to the trench and to the army as it was going out to fight, and they shouted for the battle. ]
Da machte sich David am andern Morgen früh reisefertig, überließ das Kleinvieh einem Hüter, packte die Lebensmittel ein und begab sich auf den Weg, wie Isai ihm befohlen hatte. Er kam zur Wagenburg, als das Heer gerade in Schlachtordnung ausrückte und man das Kriegsgeschrei erhob;
21 [And Israel and the Philistines formed their lines one opposite the other. ]
Israel und die Philister stellten sich zum Kampf auf, Schlachtreihe gegen Schlachtreihe.
22 [And David deposited his burden in the hand of a keeper, and ran to the line, and went and asked his brethren how they Were. ]
Da übergab David das Gepäck, das er mitgebracht hatte, dem Gepäckhüter, lief dann in die Schlachtreihe und erkundigte sich, als er hinkam, bei seinen Brüdern nach ihrem Ergehen.
23 [And while he was speaking with them, behold the Amessaean advanced, Goliath by name, the Philistine of Geth, of the armies of the Philistines, and he spoke ] [as before, and David heard. ]
Während er sich noch mit ihnen besprach, trat der Vorkämpfer – er hieß Goliath und war ein Philister aus Gath – aus den Reihen der Philister hervor und führte dieselben Reden wie früher, so daß David es hörte;
24 [And all the men of Israel when they saw the man fled from before him, and they were greatly terrified. ]
alle Israeliten aber, die den Mann erblickten, flohen vor ihm und fürchteten sich sehr.
25 [And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that comes up? for he has reproached Israel and has come up; and it shall be that the man who shall smite him, the king shall enrich him with great wealth and shall give him his daughter, and shall make his father’s house free in Israel. ]
Da sagte einer von den Israeliten: »Habt ihr diesen Mann gesehen, der da heraufkommt? Ja, um Israel zu verhöhnen, tritt er auf! Und wer ihn erschlägt, den will der König mit großem Reichtum belohnen und will ihm seine Tochter geben und seines Vaters Haus steuerfrei in Israel machen!«
26 [and David spoke to the men who stood with him saying, Shall it indeed be done thus to the man who shall smite that Philistine, and take away reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he has defied the army of the living God? ]
Da fragte David die Männer, die bei ihm standen: »Wie soll der Mann belohnt werden, der diesen Philister da erschlägt und Israel von der Schande befreit? Wer ist denn dieser Philister, dieser Heide, daß er die Schlachtreihen des lebendigen Gottes beschimpfen darf?«
27 [And the people spoke to him according to this Word, saying Thus shall it be done to the man Who shall smite him. ]
Da wiederholten ihm die Leute die frühere Mitteilung: »So und so wird man den Mann belohnen, der ihn erschlägt!«
28 [And Eliab his elder brother heard as he spoke to the men, and Eliab was very angry with David and said, Why hast thou thus come down, and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride and the naughtiness of thine heart, for thou art come down to see the battle. ]
Als nun sein ältester Bruder Eliab hörte, wie er sich mit den Männern unterhielt, geriet er in Zorn über David und rief aus: »Wozu bist du eigentlich hergekommen, und wem hast du die paar Schafe dort in der Steppe überlassen? Ich kenne deinen vorwitzigen und boshaften Sinn wohl: du bist nur hergekommen, um dir den Krieg anzusehen!«
29 [And David said what have I done now? ] [Have I no business here? ]
David entgegnete: »Nun, was habe ich denn jetzt getan? Es war ja nur eine Frage!«
30 [And he turned from him towards another, and he spoke after the same manner; and the people answered him ] [after the former manner. ]
Damit wandte er sich von ihm ab, einem andern zu, und wiederholte seine vorige Frage, und die Leute gaben ihm dieselbe Auskunft wie zuvor.
31 [And the Words which David spoke were heard and were reported ] [to Saul. And he took him to himself. ]
Als man nun hörte, wie David sich ausgesprochen hatte, hinterbrachte man es dem Saul, und dieser ließ ihn zu sich kommen.
32 And David said to Saul, Let not, I pray thee, the heart of my lord be dejected within him: thy servant will go, and fight with this Philistine.
Da sagte David zu Saul: »Kein Mensch braucht um den da den Mut zu verlieren! Dein Knecht will hingehen und mit diesem Philister kämpfen.«
33 And Saul said to David, Thou wilt not in anywise be able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for thou art a mere youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
Saul aber antwortete ihm: »Du kannst diesem Philister nicht entgegentreten, um mit ihm zu kämpfen; denn du bist noch ein Jüngling, er aber ist ein Kriegsmann von Jugend auf!«
34 And David said to Saul, Thy servant was tending the flock for his father; and when a lion came and a she-bear, and took a sheep out of the flock,
Da entgegnete David dem Saul: »Dein Knecht hat seinem Vater das Kleinvieh gehütet; wenn da ein Löwe oder ein Bär kam und ein Stück aus der Herde wegtrug,
35 then I went forth after him, and smote him, and drew [the spoil] out of his mouth: and as he rose up against me, then I caught hold of his throat, and smote him, and slew him.
so lief ich ihm nach und erschlug ihn und riß es ihm aus dem Rachen; leistete er mir aber Widerstand, so packte ich ihn am Bart und schlug ihn tot.
36 Thy servant smote both the lion and the bear, and the uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them: shall I not go and smite him, and remove this day a reproach from Israel? For who [is] this uncircumcised one, who has defied the army of the living God?
Löwen so gut wie Bären hat dein Knecht erschlagen, und diesem Philister, diesem Heiden, soll es ebenso ergehen wie jenen allen; denn er hat die Schlachtreihen des lebendigen Gottes verhöhnt!«
37 The Lord who delivered me out of the paw of the lion and out the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this uncircumcised Philistine. And Saul said to David, Go, and the Lord shall be with thee.
Dann fuhr David fort: »Der HERR, der mich aus den Krallen der Löwen und aus den Klauen der Bären errettet hat, der wird mich auch aus der Hand dieses Philisters erretten.« Da sagte Saul zu David: »So gehe hin! Der HERR wird mit dir sein!«
38 And Saul clothed David with a military coat, and [put] his brazen helmet on his head.
Hierauf legte Saul dem David seine Rüstung an: er setzte ihm einen ehernen Helm aufs Haupt und zog ihm einen Panzer an;
39 And he girt David with his sword over his coat: and he made trial walking [with them] once and again: and David said to Saul, I shall not be able to go with these, for I have not proved [them]: so they remove them from him.
weiter mußte David Sauls Schwert über seinen Waffenrock gürten und bemühte sich dann zu gehen; denn er hatte es noch nie versucht. Aber er sagte zu Saul: »Ich kann darin nicht gehen, denn ich bin nicht daran gewöhnt.« So legte David denn alles wieder ab,
40 And he took his staff in his hand, and he chose for himself five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the shepherd's scrip which he had for his store, and his sling was in his hand; and he approached the Philistine.
nahm nur seinen Stecken in die Hand, suchte sich aus dem Bach fünf glatte Kieselsteine aus und tat sie in die Hirtentasche, die ihm als Schleudertasche diente; dann nahm er seine Schleuder in die Hand und ging auf den Philister los.
41 And the Philistine advanced and drew nigh to David, and a man bearing his shield went before him, and the Philistine looked on.
Der Philister aber kam immer näher an David heran, während sein Schildträger vor ihm herschritt.
42 And Goliath saw David, and despised him; for he was a lad, and ruddy, with a fair countenance.
Als nun der Philister hinblickte und David sah, verachtete er ihn, weil er noch so jung war, ein bräunlicher Jüngling von schmuckem Aussehen.
43 And the Philistine said to David, Am I as a dog, that thou comest against me with a staff and stones? [and David said, Nay, but worse than a dog.] And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
Daher rief der Philister dem David zu: »Bin ich etwa ein Hund, daß du mit Stöcken zu mir kommst?« Hierauf fluchte der Philister dem David bei seinem Gott
44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh to the birds of the air, and to the beasts of the earth.
und rief dem David zu: »Komm nur her zu mir, damit ich dein Fleisch den Vögeln des Himmels und den Tieren des Feldes gebe!«
45 And David said to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with sword, and with spear, and with shield; but I come to thee in the name of the Lord God of hosts of the army of Israel, which thou hast defied
David aber erwiderte ihm: »Du trittst mir mit Schwert und Lanze und Wurfspieß entgegen, ich aber trete dir entgegen mit dem Namen des HERRN der Heerscharen, des Gottes der Schlachtreihen Israels, die du verhöhnt hast.
46 this day. And the Lord shall deliver thee this day into my hand; and I will slay thee, and take away thy head from off thee, and will give thy limbs and the limbs of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky, and to the wild beasts of the earth; and all the earth shall know that there is a God in Israel.
Am heutigen Tage wird dich der HERR in meine Hand fallen lassen, daß ich dich erschlage und dir den Kopf abhaue; und (deinen Leichnam und) die Leichen des Philisterheeres werde ich noch heute den Vögeln des Himmels und den wilden Tieren des Landes übergeben, damit alle Welt erkennt, daß Israel einen Gott hat!
47 And all this assembly shall know that the Lord delivers not by sword or spear, for the battle [is] the Lord's, and the Lord will deliver you into our hands.
und alle, die hier versammelt sind, sollen erkennen, daß der HERR nicht Schwert und Spieß braucht, um den Sieg zu schaffen; denn der HERR hat die Entscheidung im Kampf, und er wird euch in unsere Hand geben!«
48 And the Philistine arose and went to meet David.
Als sich nun der Philister in Bewegung setzte und auf David losging, lief dieser eilends aus der Schlachtreihe, dem Philister entgegen;
49 And David stretched out his hand to his scrip, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine on his forehead, and the stone penetrated through the helmet into his forehead, and he fell upon his face to the ground.
dabei griff er mit der Hand in die Tasche, nahm einen Stein heraus, schleuderte ihn und traf den Philister an die Stirn, so daß ihm der Stein in die Stirn eindrang und er vornüber zu Boden fiel.
50 [So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and smote the Philistine and slew him, and there was no sword in the hand of David. ]
So überwältigte David den Philister mit der Schleuder und dem Stein, besiegte den Philister und tötete ihn, ohne ein Schwert in der Hand zu haben.
51 And David ran, and stood upon him, and took his sword, and slew him, and cut off his head: and the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, and they fled.
Er lief nämlich hin, trat an den Philister heran, nahm dessen Schwert, zog es aus der Scheide und tötete ihn vollends, indem er ihm den Kopf damit abhieb. Als nun die Philister sahen, daß ihr stärkster Mann tot war, ergriffen sie die Flucht.
52 And the men of Israel and Juda arose, and shouted and pursued them as far as the entrance to Geth, and as far as the gate of Ascalon: and the slain men of the Philistines fell in the way of the gates, both to Geth, and to Accaron.
Da machten sich die Männer von Israel und Juda auf, erhoben das Kriegsgeschrei und verfolgten die Philister bis nach Gath und bis an die Tore von Ekron, so daß die Leichen der erschlagenen Philister auf dem Wege von Saaraim bis nach Gath und Ekron lagen.
53 And the men of Israel returned from pursuing after the Philistines, and they destroyed their camp.
Als dann die Israeliten von der Verfolgung der Philister zurückkehrten, plünderten sie deren Lager.
54 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.
David aber nahm den Kopf des Philisters und brachte ihn nach Jerusalem; seine Rüstung dagegen legte er in seinem Zelte nieder.
55 And when Saul saw David going out to meet the Philistine, he said to Abener the captain of the host, Whose son is this youth? and Abener said, As thy sould lives, O King, I know not.
Als aber Saul sah, wie David dem Philister entgegenging, fragte er seinen Heerführer Abner: »Wessen Sohn ist denn der Jüngling, Abner?« Dieser antwortete: »Bei deinem Leben, o König: ich weiß es nicht!«
56 And the king said, Do thou ask whose son this youth is.
Da gab ihm der König den Auftrag: »Erkundige dich doch, wessen Sohn der junge Mann ist!«
57 And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abener took him and brought him before Saul, and the head of the Philistine was in his hand.
Sobald nun David von dem Sieg über den Philister zurückkehrte, nahm ihn Abner mit sich und führte ihn vor Saul, während er den Kopf des Philisters noch in der Hand hatte.
58 And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, young man? and David said, The son of thy servant Jessae the Bethleemite.
Da fragte ihn Saul: »Wessen Sohn bist du, junger Mann?«, und David antwortete: »Der Sohn deines Knechtes Isai aus Bethlehem.«
