< Psalms 89 >

1 Maschil. Of Ethan the Ezrahite. My song will be of the mercies of the Lord for ever: with my mouth will I make his faith clear to all generations.
“A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrachite.” The kindnesses of the Lord will I for ever sing: from generation to generation will I make known thy faithfulness with my mouth.
2 For you have said, Mercy will be made strong for ever; my faith will be unchanging in the heavens.
For I have said, To eternity will kindness be built up: the heavens—yea, in these wilt thou establish thy faithfulness.
3 I have made an agreement with the man of my selection, I have made an oath to David my servant;
“I have made a covenant with my elect, I have sworn unto David my servant,
4 I will make your seed go on for ever, your kingdom will be strong through all generations. (Selah)
Unto eternity will I establish thy seed, and I will build up thy throne, from generation to generation.” (Selah)
5 In heaven let them give praise for your wonders, O Lord; and your unchanging faith among the saints.
And the heavens praise thy wonder, O Lord: also thy faithfulness in the assembly of holy ones.
6 For who is there in the heavens in comparison with the Lord? who is like the Lord among the sons of the gods?
For who in the sky can be compared unto the Lord? who can be likened unto the Lord among the sons of the mighty?
7 God is greatly to be feared among the saints, and to be honoured over all those who are about him.
God is greatly terrific in the secret council of the holy ones and fear-inspiring over all that are about him.
8 O Lord God of armies, who is strong like you, O Jah? and your unchanging faith is round about you.
O Lord God of hosts, who is powerful, like thee, Eternal! and thy faithfulness is round about thee.
9 You have rule over the sea in storm; when its waves are troubled, you make them calm.
Thou rulest over the pride of the sea: when its waves are lifted up, thou assuagest them.
10 Rahab was crushed by you like one wounded to death; with your strong arm you put to flight all your haters.
Thou didst crush Rahab as one that is slain: with thy strong arm didst thou scatter thy enemies.
11 Yours are the heavens, and the earth is yours; you have made the world, and everything which is in it.
Thine are the heavens, also thine is the earth: as for the world and what filleth it, thou hast founded them.
12 You have made the north and the south; Tabor and Hermon are sounding with joy at your name.
The north and the south—these hast thou created: Tabor and Chermon shall rejoice in thy name.
13 Yours is an arm of power; strong is your hand and high your right hand.
Thine is the powerful arm, with might: strong is thy hand, and exalted is thy right hand.
14 The seat of your kingdom is resting on righteousness and right judging: mercy and good faith come before your face.
Righteousness and justice are the prop of thy throne: kindness and truth precede thy presence.
15 Happy are the people who have knowledge of the holy cry: the light of your face, O Lord, will be shining on their way.
Happy is the people that know the cornet's sound: O Lord, in the light of thy countenance will they ever walk firmly.
16 In your name will they have joy all the day: in your righteousness will they be lifted up.
In thy name will they be glad all the day, and in thy righteousness will they be exalted.
17 For you are the glory of their strength; in your pleasure will our horn be lifted up.
For thou art the glory of their strength; and through thy favor will our horn be exalted.
18 For our breastplate is the Lord; and our king is the Holy One of Israel's.
For of the Lord is our shield; and of the Holy One of Israel is our king.
19 Then your voice came to your holy one in a vision, saying, I have put the crown on a strong one, lifting up one taken from among the people.
Then spokest thou in a vision to thy pious [servant], and saidst, “I have bestowed help to one that is mighty; I have exalted a youth out of the people;
20 I have made discovery of David my servant; I have put my holy oil on his head.
I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him;
21 My hand will be his support; my arm will give him strength.
With whom my hand shall be firmly established; also my arm shall strengthen him;
22 The deceit of those who are against him will not overcome him; he will not be troubled by the sons of evil.
The enemy shall not exact from him like a lender: and the son of injustice shall not afflict him:
23 I will have those who are against him broken before his face, and his haters will be crushed under my blows.
And I will beat down before his face his assailants, and those that hate him will I plague.
24 But my faith and my mercy will be with him; and in my name will his horn be lifted up.
But my faithfulness and my kindness shall be with him: and through my name shall his horn be exalted.
25 I will put his hand in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers.
And I will place on the sea his hand, and on the rivers his right hand.
26 He will say to me, You are my father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.
He will call unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.
27 And I will make him the first of my sons, most high over the kings of the earth.
Also I will appoint my first-born, the highest among the kings of the earth.
28 I will keep my mercy for him for ever; my agreement with him will not be changed.
For evermore will I keep for him my kindness, and my covenant shall stand faithfully with him.
29 His seed will keep their place for ever; his kingdom will be eternal, like the heavens.
And I appoint for ever his seed, and his throne as the days of heaven.
30 If his children give up my law, and are not ruled by my decisions;
If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my ordinances;
31 If my rules are broken, and my orders are not kept;
If they profane my statutes, and keep not my commandments:
32 Then I will send punishment on them for their sin; my rod will be the reward of their evil-doing.
Then will I visit with the rod their transgressions, and with plagues their iniquity.
33 But I will not take away my mercy from him, and will not be false to my faith.
Nevertheless my kindness will I not make utterly void from him, and I will not act falsely against my faithfulness.
34 I will be true to my agreement; the things which have gone out of my lips will not be changed.
I will not profane my covenant, and what is gone out of my lips will I not alter.
35 I have made an oath once by my holy name, that I will not be false to David.
One thing have I sworn by my holiness, that I will not lie unto David.
36 His seed will not come to an end for ever; the seat of his kingdom will be like the sun before me.
His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne shall be like the sun before me.
37 It will be fixed for ever like the moon; and the witness in heaven is true. (Selah)
Like the moon shall it be firmly established for ever, and as this faithful witness in the sky.” (Selah)
38 But you have put him away in disgust; you have been angry with the king of your selection.
And yet thou hast east off and despised, thou hast become wroth with thy anointed.
39 You have made your agreement with your servant of no effect: you have had no respect for his crown, it has come down even to the earth.
Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned, down to the ground, his crown.
40 All his walls are broken down; you have given his strong towers to destruction.
Thou hast broken down all his fences: thou hast brought his strong-holds to terror.
41 All those who come by take away his goods; he is laughed at by his neighbours.
All that pass by the way plunder him: he is become a reproach to his neighbors.
42 You have given power to the right hand of his haters; you have made glad all those who are against him.
Thou hast raised up the right hand of his assailants: thou hast caused all his enemies to rejoice.
43 His sword is turned back; you have not been his support in the fight.
Thou hast also turned the edge of his sword, and hast not let him stand erect in the battle.
44 You have put an end to his glory: the seat of his kingdom has been levelled to the earth.
Thou hast made his brilliancy cease; and his throne hast thou thrown down to the ground.
45 You have made him old before his time; he is covered with shame. (Selah)
Thou hast shortened the days of his youth: thou hast enshrouded him with shame. (Selah)
46 How long, O Lord, will you Keep yourself for ever from our eyes? how long will your wrath be burning like fire?
How long, Lord, wilt thou hide thyself, continually? how long shall thy fury burn like fire?
47 See how short my time is; why have you made all men for no purpose?
Remember [what] I am, what my duration is [here], for what nothingness thou hast created all sons of men!
48 What man now living will not see death? will he be able to keep back his soul from the underworld? (Selah) (Sheol h7585)
What man is there that can live, and shall not see death? that can deliver his soul from the power of the nether word? (Selah) (Sheol h7585)
49 Lord, where are your earlier mercies? where is the oath which you made to David in unchanging faith?
Where are thy former kindnesses, O Lord, which thou hast sworn unto David by thy truth?
50 Keep in mind, O Lord, the shame of your servants, and how the bitter words of all the people have come into my heart;
Remember, Lord, the disgrace of thy servants; that I bear in my bosom the [burden] of all the many nations;
51 The bitter words of your haters, O Lord, shaming the footsteps of your king.
That thy enemies have defied, O Lord; that they have defied the footsteps of thy anointed.
52 Let the Lord be praised for ever. So be it, So be it.
Blessed be the Lord for evermore. Amen, and Amen.
