Judges 6

1 And the children of Israel did evil in the eyes of the Lord; and the Lord gave them up into the hand of Midian for seven years.

Les fils d'Israël firent encore le mal devant le Seigneur, et le Seigneur les livra aux mains de Madian, pendant sept années.

2 And Midian was stronger than Israel; and because of the Midianites, the children of Israel made holes for themselves in the mountains, and hollows in the rocks, and strong places.

Et la main de Madian prévalut sur Israël; et les fils d'Israël, à l'aspect de Madian, se firent des cachettes dans les montagnes; ils se firent des grottes et des murs de défense dans les rochers.

3 And whenever Israel's grain was planted, the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the east came up against them;

Quand les fils d'Israël avaient semé, Madian montait avec Amalec; les fils de l'Orient marchaient dans leurs rangs, et ils campaient chez eux,

4 And put their army in position against them; and they took all the produce of the earth as far as Gaza, till there was no food in Israel, or any sheep or oxen or asses.

Et ils détruisaient leurs fruits jusqu'aux portes de Gaza, et ils ne laissèrent rien de ce qui sert à la vie en la terre d'Israël, et ils n'épargnaient ni bœuf ni âne parmi les troupeaux,

5 For they came up regularly with their oxen and their tents; they came like the locusts in number; they and their camels were without number; and they came into the land for its destruction.

Parce qu'ils montaient avec tous leurs biens et avec leurs tentes, nombreux comme des sauterelles lorsqu'elles foisonnent; leur multitude et celle de leurs chameaux étaient innombrables; ils dominaient sur la terre d'Israël, et ils la dévastaient.

6 And Israel was in great need because of Midian; and the cry of the children of Israel went up to the Lord.

Israël était tout appauvri devant la face de Madian. Et les fils d'Israël crièrent au Seigneur,

7 And when the cry of the children of Israel, because of Midian, came before the Lord,

Et il advint ensuite que

8 The Lord sent a prophet to the children of Israel, who said to them, The Lord the God of Israel, has said, I took you up from Egypt, out of the prison-house;

Et le Seigneur envoya un prophète aux fils d'Israël, et l'homme leur dit: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël: Je suis Celui qui vous ai tirés de la terre d'Egypte, qui vous ai fait sortir de votre maison de servitude.

9 And I took you out of the hands of the Egyptians and out of the hands of all who were cruel to you, and I sent them out by force from before you and gave you their land;

Je vous ai arrachés des mains de l'Egyptien et de tous ceux qui vous opprimaient; j'ai banni ceux-ci de devant votre face, et je vous ai donné leur territoire.

10 And I said to you, I am the Lord your God; you are not to give worship to the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living, but you did not give ear to my voice.

Et je vous ai dit: Je suis le Seigneur votre Dieu; n'ayez point crainte des dieux des Amorrhéens, parmi lesquels vous résiderez en leur terre. Mais vous n'avez pas été dociles à ma voix.

11 Now the angel of the Lord came and took his seat under the oak-tree in Ophrah, in the field of Joash the Abiezrite; and his son Gideon was crushing grain in the place where the grapes were crushed, so that the Midianites might not see it.

Ensuite, un ange du Seigneur vint, et il s'arrêta sous le térébinthe d'Ephratha, en la terre de Joas, fils d'Esdri, comme son fils Gédéon battait du blé dans le pressoir pour échapper aux regards des Madianites.

12 And the angel of the Lord came before his eyes, and said to him, The Lord is with you, O man of war.

L'ange du Seigneur lui apparut, et il lui dit: Le Seigneur est avec toi, fort parmi les plus vaillants.

13 Then Gideon said to him, O my lord, if the Lord is with us why has all this come on us? And where are all his works of power, of which our fathers have given us word, saying, Did not the Lord take us out of Egypt? But now he has given us up, handing us over to the power of Midian.

Et Gédéon dit: Je vous prie, mon Seigneur; si le Seigneur est avec nous, pourquoi ces maux nous sont-ils venus? Et où sont tous ces miracles que nous ont racontés nos pères, disant: N'est-ce point le Seigneur qui nous a fait sortir de l'Egypte? Maintenant, il nous a renversés, il nous a livrés aux mains de Madian.

14 And the Lord, turning to him, said, Go in the strength you have and be Israel's saviour from Midian: have I not sent you?

L'ange du Seigneur le regarda, et lui dit: Marche en ta force, et tu délivreras Israël des mains de Madian. Voilà que pour cela je t'envoie.

15 And he said to him, O Lord, how may I be the saviour of Israel? See, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.

Et Gédéon lui dit: Je vous prie, mon Seigneur, et comment sauverai-je Israël? Voilà que mes mille hommes sont sans force dans Manassé, et je suis le moindre de la maison de mon père.

16 Then the Lord said to him, Truly, I will be with you, and you will overcome the Midianites as if they were one man.

L'ange reprit: Le Seigneur sera avec toi, et tu vaincras Madian comme un seul homme.

17 So he said to him, If now I have grace in your eyes, then give me a sign that it is you who are talking to me.

Et Gédéon lui dit: Si j'ai trouvé miséricorde à vos yeux, et si vous accomplissez aujourd'hui par moi tout ce que vous m'avez promis,

18 Do not go away till I come with my offering and put it before you. And he said, I will not go away before you come back.

Ne vous éloignez pas d'ici que je n'y revienne; j'apporterai une victime, et je la sacrifierai devant vous. Et l'ange répondit: Je vais rester jusqu'à ton retour.

19 Then Gideon went in and made ready a young goat, and with an ephah of meal he made unleavened cakes: he put the meat in a basket and the soup in which it had been cooked he put in a pot, and he took it out to him under the oak-tree and gave it to him there.

Gédéon rentra donc; il prépara un chevreau, et des pains sans levain d'une mesure de farine (éphi); il mit les chairs sur une corbeille, il versa le jus dans un vase; il porta tout cela à l'ange sous le térébinthe, et il s'approcha de lui.

20 And the angel of God said to him, Take the meat and the unleavened cakes and put them down on the rock over there, draining out the soup over them. And he did so.

Et l'ange de Dieu lui dit: Prends les chairs et les azymes, dépose-les sur cette pierre, et répands le jus par-dessus; ainsi fit Gédéon.

21 Then the angel of the Lord put out the stick which was in his hand, touching the meat and the cakes with the end of it; and a flame came up out of the rock, burning up the meat and the cakes: and the angel of the Lord was seen no longer.

Et l'ange du Seigneur étendit le bout de la baguette qu'il tenait à la main; il toucha les chairs et les azymes, et il s'éleva de la pierre une flamme qui dévora les chairs et les azymes; et l'ange du Seigneur disparut à ses yeux.

22 Then Gideon was certain that he was the angel of the Lord; and Gideon said, I am in fear, O Lord God! for I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.

Gédéon vit ainsi que c'était un ange du Seigneur, et il dit: Hélas! hélas! Seigneur, mon Seigneur, j'ai vu face à face un ange du Seigneur.

23 But the Lord said to him, Peace be with you; have no fear: you are in no danger of death.

Et le Seigneur lui dit: La paix soit avec toi; n'aie point crainte, tu ne mourras point.

24 Then Gideon made an altar there to the Lord, and gave it the name Yahweh-shalom; to this day it is in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Gédéon éleva en ce lieu un autel au Seigneur, et il le nomma la Paix du Seigneur, comme on le nomme de nos jours, car il subsiste encore en Ephratha, ville du père Esdri.

25 The same night the Lord said to him, Take ten men of your servants and an ox seven years old, and after pulling down the altar of Baal which is your father's, and cutting down the holy tree by its side,

Cette nuit même il advint que le Seigneur dit à Gédéon: Prends le taureau de ton père, avec une seconde tête de sept ans; puis tu renverseras l'autel de Baal appartenant à ton père, et tu détruiras le bois sacré qui est tout auprès;

26 Make an altar to the Lord your God on the top of this rock, in the ordered way and take the ox and make a burned offering with the wood of the holy tree which has been cut down.

Cela fait, tu élèveras un autel au Seigneur ton Dieu sur la cime de ce mont Maozi, en signe de résistance; tu prendras la seconde tête de bétail, et tu l'offriras comme holocauste, en la brûlant avec les arbres du bois sacré que tu auras détruit.

27 Then Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the Lord had said to him; but fearing to do it by day, because of his father's people and the men of the town, he did it by night.

Gédéon prit dix de ses serviteurs, et il fit ce que le Seigneur lui avait dit. Or, comme il craignait, à cause de la maison de son père et des hommes de la ville, de le faire en plein jour, il le fit la nuit.

28 And the men of the town got up early in the morning, and they saw the altar of Baal broken down, and the holy tree which was by it cut down, and the ox offered on the altar which had been put up there.

Les hommes de la ville se levèrent de grand matin, et voilà que l'autel de Baal était renversé, et le bois sacré situé tout auprès détruit; et ils virent la seconde tête de bétail que Gédéon avait offerte, sur l'autel qu'il avait élevé.

29 And they said to one another, Who has done this thing? And after searching with care, they said, Gideon, the son of Joash, has done this thing.

Chacun dit à son voisin: Qui a fait cela? ils s'informèrent, et ils apprirent que c'était Gédéon, fils de Joas.

30 Then the men of the town said to Joash, Make your son come out to be put to death, for pulling down the altar of Baal and cutting down the holy tree which was by it.

Les hommes de la ville dirent alors à Joas: Amène-nous ton fils; qu'il soit mis à mort, parce qu'il a renversé l'autel de Baal et qu'il a détruit le bois sacré situé auprès.

31 But Joash said to all those who were attacking him, Will you take up the cause of Baal? will you be his saviour? Let anyone who will take up his cause be put to death while it is still morning: if he is a god, let him take up his cause himself because of the pulling down of his altar.

Et Gédéon, fils de Joas, dit à tous les hommes de la ville, qui s'étaient soulevés contre lui: Allez-vous plaider pour Baal? est-ce vous qui le sauverez? Que celui qui plaidera pour Baal soit mis à mort avant le lever du jour. Si Baal est Dieu, qu'il se venge, puisqu'on a renversé son autel.

32 So that day he gave him the name of Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal take up his cause against him because his altar has been broken down.

Et il se donna à lui-même ce jour-là le nom de Jérobaal, en disant: Que Baal se venge, puisque son autel a été renversé.

33 Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the east, banding themselves together, went over and put up their tents in the valley of Jezreel.

En ce temps-là, Madian, Amalec, et les fils de l'Orient, étaient rassembles tous à la fois; ils campaient dans la vallée de Jezraël;

34 But the spirit of the Lord came on Gideon; and at the sound of his horn all Abiezer came together after him.

Et l'esprit du Seigneur vint en Gédéon; il fit sonner du cor, et sur ses pas Abiézer accourut à son secours.

35 And he sent through all Manasseh, and they came after him; and he sent to Asher and Zebulun and Naphtali, and they came up and were joined to the others.

Alors, il dépêcha des messagers à tout Manassé, a Azer, à Zabulon et à Nephthali, et il marcha au-devant des hommes de ces tribus.

36 Then Gideon said to God, If you are going to give Israel salvation by my hand, as you have said,

Et Gédéon dit à Dieu: Si votre volonté est de sauver par ma main Israël, comme vous avez dit,

37 See, I will put the wool of a sheep on the grain-floor; if there is dew on the wool only, while all the earth is dry, then I will be certain that it is your purpose to give Israel salvation by my hand as you have said.

Voyez: je dépose dans l'aire cette toison de laine; que la rosée se montre sur la toison seule et qu'il y ait sécheresse sur toute la terre, et je reconnaîtrai votre volonté de sauver par ma main Israël, comme vous avez dit.

38 And it was so: for he got up early on the morning after, and twisting the wool in his hands, he got a basin full of water from the dew on the wool.

Il en fut ainsi. Gédéon se leva de grand matin; il pressa la toison, la rosée coula de la laine, et remplit d'eau un bassin.

39 Then Gideon said to God, Do not be moved to wrath against me if I say only this: let me make one more test with the wool; let the wool now be dry, while the earth is covered with dew.

Ensuite, Gédéon dit à Dieu: Que votre courroux ne s'enflamme point contre moi, et je parlerai une seule fois encore, je ferai une seule fois encore l'épreuve de la toison: que la sécheresse se montre sur la toison seule, et la rosée sur toute la terre.

40 And that night God did so; for the wool was dry, and there was dew on all the earth round it.

Dieu fit ainsi en cette nuit même: la sécheresse se montra sur la toison seule, et il y eut de la rosée sur toute la terre.
