Joshua 5
1 Now when the news came to all the kings of the Amorites on the west side of Jordan, and all the kings of the Canaanites living by the sea, how the Lord had made the waters of Jordan dry before the children of Israel, till they had gone across, their hearts became like water, and there was no more spirit in them, because of the children of Israel.
Or il arriva qu'aussitôt que tous les Rois des Amorrhéens qui [étaient] au deçà du Jourdain vers l'Occident, et tous les Rois des Cananéens qui étaient près de la mer, apprirent que l'Eternel avait fait tarir les eaux du Jourdain devant les enfants d'Israël, jusqu'à ce qu'ils fussent passés, leur cœur se fondit, et il n'y eut plus de courage en eux à cause des enfants d'Israël.
2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, Make yourself stone knives and give the children of Israel circumcision a second time.
En ce temps-là l'Eternel dit à Josué: Fais-toi des couteaux tranchants, et circoncis de nouveau pour une seconde fois les enfants d'Israël.
3 So Joshua made stone knives and gave the children of Israel circumcision at Gibeath-ha-araloth.
Et Josué se fit des couteaux tranchants, et circoncit les enfants d'Israël au coteau des prépuces.
4 And this is the reason why Joshua did so: all the males of the people who came out of Egypt, all the fighting-men, had been overtaken by death in the waste land on the way, after they came out of Egypt.
Or la raison pour laquelle Josué les circoncit, c'est que tout le peuple qui était sorti d'Egypte, tous les mâles, [dis-je], hommes de guerre étaient morts au désert en chemin, après être sortis d'Egypte.
5 All the people who came out had undergone circumcision; but all the people whose birth had taken place in the waste land on their journey from Egypt had not.
Et que tout le peuple qui était sorti, avait bien été circoncis, mais ils n'avaient point circoncis aucun du peuple né dans le désert en chemin, après être sortis d'Egypte.
6 For the children of Israel were wandering in the waste land for forty years, till all the nation, that is, all the fighting-men, who had come out of Egypt, were dead, because they did not give ear to the voice of the Lord: to whom the Lord said, with an oath, that he would not let them see the land which the Lord had given his word to their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
Car les enfants d'Israël avaient marché par le désert quarante ans, jusqu'à ce qu'eut été consumé tout le peuple des gens de guerre qui étaient sortis d'Egypte, [et] qui n'avaient point obéi à la voix de l'Eternel; auxquels l'Eternel avait juré qu'il ne leur laisserait point voir le pays dont l'Eternel avait juré à leurs pères qu'il nous le donnerait, et qui est un pays découlant de lait et de miel.
7 And their children, who came up in their place, now underwent circumcision by the hands of Joshua, not having had it before: for there had been no circumcision on the journey.
Et il avait suscité en leur place leurs enfants, lesquels Josué circoncit, parce qu'ils étaient incirconcis; car on ne les avait pas circoncis en chemin.
8 So when all the nation had undergone circumcision, they kept in their tents till they were well again.
Et quand on eut achevé de circoncire tout le peuple, ils demeurèrent en leur lieu au camp, jusqu'à ce qu'ils fussent guéris.
9 And the Lord said to Joshua, Today the shame of Egypt has been rolled away from you. So that place was named Gilgal, to this day.
Et l'Eternel dit à Josué: Aujourd'hui j'ai roulé de dessus vous l'opprobre d'Egypte. Et ce lieu-là a été nommé Guilgal jusqu'à aujourd'hui.
10 So the children of Israel put up their tents in Gilgal; and they kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month, in the evening, in the lowlands of Jericho.
Ainsi les enfants d'Israël se campèrent en Guilgal, et célébrèrent la Pâque le quatorzième jour du mois, sur le soir, dans les campagnes de Jérico.
11 And on the day after the Passover, they had for their food the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and dry grain on the same day.
Et dès le lendemain de la Pâque, ils mangèrent du blé du pays, [savoir] des pains sans levain et du grain rôti, en ce même jour.
12 And there was no more manna from the day after they had for their food the produce of the land; the children of Israel had manna no longer, but that year the produce of the land of Canaan was their food.
Et la Manne cessa dès le lendemain, après qu'ils eurent mangé du blé du pays; et les enfants d'Israël n'eurent plus de Manne, mais ils mangèrent du crû de la terre de Canaan cette année-là.
13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, lifting up his eyes he saw a man in front of him, with his sword uncovered in his hand: and Joshua went up to him and said, Are you for us or against us?
Or il arriva, comme Josué était près de Jérico, qu'il leva les yeux, et regarda; et voici, vis-à-vis de lui, se tenait debout un homme qui avait son épée nue en sa main; et Josué alla vers lui, et lui dit: Es-tu des nôtres, ou de nos ennemis?
14 And he said, No; but I have come as captain of the armies of the Lord. Then Joshua, falling down with his face to the earth in worship, said, What has my lord to say to his servant?
Et il dit: Non; mais je suis le chef de l'armée de l'Eternel, [qui] suis venu maintenant. Et Josué se jeta sur son visage en terre, et se prosterna, et lui dit: Qu'est-ce que mon Seigneur dit à son serviteur?
15 And the captain of the Lord's army said to Joshua, Take off your shoes from your feet, for the place where you are is holy. And Joshua did so.
Et le chef de l'armée de l'Eternel dit à Josué: Délie ton soulier de tes pieds; car le lieu sur lequel tu te tiens, est saint; et Josué [le] fit ainsi.
