Joshua 10
1 Now when it came to the ears of Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, that Joshua had taken Ai, and had given it up to the curse (for as he had done to Jericho and its king, so he had done to Ai and its king); and that the people of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living among them;
Or quand Adoni-tsédek, Roi de Jérusalem, eut entendu que Josué avait pris Haï, et qu'il l'avait entièrement détruite à la façon de l'interdit, ayant fait à Haï et à son Roi, comme il avait fait à Jérico et à son Roi, et que les habitants de Gabaon avaient fait la paix avec les Israélites, et étaient parmi eux;
2 He was in great fear, because Gibeon was a great town, like one of the king's towns, greater than Ai, and all the men in it were men of war.
On craignit beaucoup, parce que Gabaon était une grande ville, comme une ville Royale, et elle était plus grande que Haï; et [parce que] tous ses hommes étaient forts.
3 So Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, sent to Hoham, king of Hebron, and to Piram, king of Jarmuth, and to Japhia, king of Lachish, and to Debir, king of Eglon, saying,
C'est pourquoi Adoni-tsédek, Roi de Jérusalem, envoya vers Horam Roi de Hébron, et vers Biréam, Roi de Jarmuth, et vers Japhiah, Roi de Lakis, et vers Débir, Roi de Héglon, pour leur dire:
4 Come up to me and give me help, and let us make an attack on Gibeon: for they have made peace with Joshua and the children of Israel.
Montez vers moi, et donnez-moi du secours afin que nous frappions Gabaon; car elle a fait la paix avec Josué, et avec les enfants d'Israël.
5 So the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, were banded together, and went up with all their armies and took up their position before Gibeon and made war against it.
Ainsi cinq Rois des Amorrhéens, [savoir], le Roi de Jérusalem, le Roi de Hébron, le Roi de Jarmuth, le Roi de Lakis, et le Roi de Héglon, s'assemblèrent et montèrent eux et toutes leurs armées, et se campèrent contre Gabaon, et lui firent la guerre.
6 And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua to the tent-circle at Gilgal, saying, Be not slow to send help to your servants; come up quickly to our support and keep us safe: for all the kings of the Amorites from the hill-country have come together against us.
C'est pourquoi ceux de Gabaon envoyèrent à Josué au camp à Guilgal, en disant: Ne retire point tes mains de tes serviteurs; monte promptement vers nous, et nous garantis, et donne-nous du secours; car tous les Rois des Amorrhéens qui habitent aux montagnes, se sont assemblés contre nous.
7 So Joshua went up from Gilgal with all his army and all his men of war.
Josué donc monta de Guilgal, et avec lui tout le peuple [qui était] propre à la guerre, et tous les hommes forts et vaillants.
8 And the Lord said to Joshua, Have no fear of them, for I have given them into your hands; they will all give way before you.
Et l'Eternel dit à Josué: Ne les crains point; car je les ai livrés entre tes mains, et aucun d'eux ne subsistera devant toi.
9 So Joshua, having come up from Gilgal all night, made a sudden attack on them.
Josué donc vint promptement à eux; [et] monta de Guilgal toute la nuit.
10 And the Lord made them full of fear before Israel, and they put great numbers of them to death at Gibeon, and went after them by the way going up to Beth-horon, driving them back to Azekah and Makkedah
Et l'Eternel les mit en déroute devant Israël, qui en fit un grand carnage près de Gabaon; et les poursuivit par le chemin de la montagne de Beth-horon, et les battit jusqu'à Hazéka, et jusqu'à Makkéda.
11 And in their flight before Israel, on the way down from Beth-horon, the Lord sent down great stones from heaven on them all the way to Azekah, causing their death: those whose death was caused by the stones were more than those whom the children of Israel put to death with the sword.
Et comme ils s'enfuyaient de devant Israël, et qu'ils étaient à la descente de Beth-horon, l'Eternel jeta des cieux sur eux de grosses pierres jusqu'à Hazéka, dont ils moururent; et il y en eut encore plus de ceux qui moururent des pierres de grêle, que de ceux que les enfants d'Israël tuèrent avec l'épée.
12 It was on the day when the Lord gave up the Amorites into the hands of the children of Israel that Joshua said to the Lord, before the eyes of Israel, Sun, be at rest over Gibeon; and you, O moon, in the valley of Aijalon.
Alors Josué parla à l'Eternel, le jour que l'Eternel livra l'Amorrhéen aux enfants d'Israël, et dit en la présence d'Israël: Soleil, arrête-toi sur Gabaon, et toi Lune, sur la vallée d'Ajalon.
13 And the sun was at rest and the moon kept its place till the nation had given punishment to their attackers. (Is it not recorded in the book of Jashar?) So the sun kept its place in the middle of the heavens, and was waiting, and did not go down, for the space of a day.
Et le soleil s'arrêta, et la lune aussi s'arrêta, jusqu'à ce que le peuple se fût vengé de ses ennemis. Ceci n'est-il pas écrit au Livre du Droiturier? Le soleil donc s'arrêta au milieu des cieux et ne se hâta point de se coucher environ un jour entier.
14 And there was no day like that, before it or after it, when the Lord gave ear to the voice of a man; for the Lord was fighting for Israel.
Et il n'y a point eu de jour semblable à celui-là, devant ni après, l'Eternel exauçant la voix d'un homme; car l'Eternel combattait pour les Israélites.
15 And Joshua, with all Israel, went back to the tent-circle at Gilgal.
Et Josué et tout Israël avec lui, s'en retourna au camp à Guilgal.
16 But these five kings went in flight secretly to a hole in the rock at Makkedah.
Au reste ces cinq Rois-là s'étaient enfuis, et s'étaient cachés dans une caverne à Makkéda.
17 And word was given to Joshua that the five kings had been taken in a hole in the rock at Makkedah.
Et on avait rapporté à Josué, en disant: On a trouvé les cinq Rois cachés dans une caverne à Makkéda.
18 And Joshua said, Let great stones be rolled against the mouth of the hole, and let men keep watch by it:
Et Josué avait dit: Roulez de grandes pierres à l'entrée de la caverne, mettez près d'elle quelques hommes pour les garder.
19 But do you, without waiting, go after their army, attacking them from the back; do not let them get into their towns, for the Lord your God has given them into your hands.
Mais vous, ne vous arrêtez point, poursuivez vos ennemis, et les défaites jusqu'au dernier, [et] ne les laissez point entrer dans leurs villes; car l'Eternel votre Dieu les a livrés en vos mains.
20 Now when Joshua and the children of Israel had come to the end of their war of complete destruction, and had put to death all but a small band who had got safely into the walled towns,
Et quand Josué avec les enfants d'Israël eut achevé d'en faire une très grande boucherie, jusqu'à les détruire entièrement, et que ceux d'entr'eux qui étaient échappés se furent retirés dans les villes fermées de murailles;
21 All the people went back to Joshua to the tent-circle at Makkedah in peace: and no one said a word against the children of Israel.
Tout le peuple retourna en paix au camp vers Josué à Makkéda; [et] personne ne remua sa langue contre aucun des enfants d'Israël.
22 Then Joshua said, Take away the stones from the mouth of the hole in the rock, and make those five kings come out to me.
Alors Josué dit: Ouvrez l'entrée de la caverne, et amenez-moi ces cinq Rois hors de la caverne.
23 And they did so, and made those five kings come out of the hole to him, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.
Et ils le firent ainsi, et ils amenèrent hors de la caverne ces cinq Rois: le Roi de Jérusalem, le Roi de Hébron, le Roi de Jarmuth, le Roi de Lakis et le Roi de Héglon.
24 And when they had made those kings come out to Joshua, Joshua sent for all the men of Israel, and said to the chiefs of the men of war who had gone with him, Come near and put your feet on the necks of these kings. So they came near and put their feet on their necks.
Et après qu'ils eurent amené à Josué ces cinq Rois hors de la caverne, Josué appela tous les hommes d'Israël, et dit aux Capitaines des gens de guerre qui étaient allés avec lui: Approchez-vous, mettez vos pieds sur le cou de ces Rois; et ils s'approchèrent, et mirent leurs pieds sur leur cou.
25 And Joshua said to them, Have no fear and do not be troubled; be strong and take heart: for so will the Lord do to all against whom you make war.
Alors Josué leur dit: Ne craignez point, et ne soyez point effrayés, fortifiez-vous, et vous renforcez; car l'Eternel fera ainsi à tous vos ennemis contre lesquels vous combattez.
26 Then Joshua had them put to death, hanging them on five trees, where they were till evening.
Et après cela Josué les frappa, et les fit mourir, et les fit pendre à cinq potences; et ils demeurèrent pendus à ces potences jusqu'au soir.
27 And when the sun went down, they were taken down from the trees, by Joshua's orders, and put into the hole where they had gone to be safe; and great stones were placed at the mouth of the hole, where they are to this day.
Et comme le soleil se couchait Josué fit commandement qu'on les ôtât de ces potences, et on les jeta dans la caverne où ils s'étaient cachés; et on mit à l'entrée de la caverne de grandes pierres [qui y sont demeurées] jusqu'à ce jour.
28 That day Joshua took Makkedah, and put it and its king to the sword; every soul in it he gave up to the curse without mercy: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
Josué prit aussi en ce même jour Makkéda, et la frappa au tranchant de l'épée, et défit à la façon de l'interdit son Roi et ses [habitants], et ne laissa échapper aucune personne qui fût dans cette ville; et il fit au Roi de Makkéda comme il avait fait au Roi de Jérico.
29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went on from Makkedah and came to Libnah, and made an attack on it;
Après cela Josué et tout Israël avec lui passa de Makkéda à Libna, et fit la guerre à Libna.
30 And again the Lord gave it and its king into the hands of Israel; and he put it and every person in it to the sword, till their destruction was complete; and he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
Et l'Eternel la livra aussi entre les mains d'Israël, avec son Roi, et il la frappa au tranchant de l'épée, et ne laissa échapper aucune personne qui fût dans cette ville; et il fit à son Roi comme il avait fait au Roi de Jérico.
31 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went on from Libnah to Lachish, and took up their position against it and made an attack on it,
Ensuite Josué et tout Israël avec lui passa de Libna à Lakis, et se campa devant elle, et lui fit la guerre.
32 And the Lord gave Lachish into the hands of Israel, and on the second day he took it, putting it and every person in it to the sword without mercy, as he had done to Libnah.
Et l'Eternel livra Lakis entre les mains d'Israël, qui la prit le deuxième jour, et la frappa au tranchant de l'épée, et toutes les personnes qui étaient dedans, comme il avait fait à Libna.
33 Then Horam, king of Gezer, came up to the help of Lachish; and Joshua overcame him and his people, putting all of them to death.
Alors Horam Roi de Guézer monta pour secourir Lakis; et Josué le frappa, lui et son peuple, de sorte qu'il n'en laissa pas échapper un seul homme.
34 And Joshua and all Israel with him went on from Lachish to Eglon: and they took up their position against it and made an attack on it;
Après cela Josué et tout Israël avec lui passa de Lakis à Héglon; et ils se campèrent devant elle, et lui firent la guerre;
35 And that day they took it, putting it and every person in it to the sword, as he had done to Lachish.
Et ils la prirent ce jour-là même, et la frappèrent au tranchant de l'épée; et [Josué] défit à la façon de l'interdit en ce même jour-là toutes les personnes qui y étaient, comme il avait fait à Lakis.
36 And Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron, and made an attack on it;
Puis Josué et tout Israël avec lui monta d'Héglon à Hébron, et ils lui firent la guerre.
37 And took it, overcoming it and putting it and its king and its towns and every person in it to the sword: as he had done to Eglon, he put them all to death, and gave it up to the curse with every person in it.
Et ils la prirent, et la frappèrent au tranchant de l'épée, avec son Roi, et toutes ses villes, et toutes les personnes qui y étaient; il n'en laissa échapper aucune, comme il avait fait à Héglon; et il la défit à la façon de l'interdit, et toutes les personnes qui y étaient.
38 And Joshua and all Israel with him went on to make an attack on Debir;
Ensuite Josué et tout Israël avec lui rebroussa chemin vers Débir, et ils lui firent la guerre.
39 And he took it, with its king and all its towns: and he put them to the sword, giving every person in it to the curse; all were put to death: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir and its king.
Et il la prit avec son Roi, et toutes ses villes; et ils les frappèrent au tranchant de l'épée, et défirent à la façon de l'interdit toutes les personnes qui y étaient; il n'en laissa échapper aucune. Il fit à Débir et à son Roi comme il avait fait à Hébron, et comme il avait fait à Libna et à son Roi.
40 So Joshua overcame all the land, the hill-country and the South and the lowland and the mountain slopes, and all their kings; all were put to death: and every living thing he gave up to the curse, as the Lord, the God of Israel, had given him orders.
Josué donc frappa tout ce pays-là, la montagne, et le Midi, et la plaine, et les pentes des montagnes, et tous leurs Rois; il n'en laissa échapper aucun; et il défit à la façon de l'interdit toutes les personnes vivantes, comme l'Eternel le Dieu d'Israël l'avait commandé.
41 Joshua overcame them from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and all the land of Goshen as far as Gibeon.
[Ainsi] Josué les battit depuis Kadès-barné jusqu'à Gaza, et tout le pays de Gosen, jusqu'à Gabaon.
42 And all these kings and their land Joshua took at the same time, because the Lord, the God of Israel, was fighting for Israel.
Il prit donc tout à la fois ces Rois-là et leur pays; parce que l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, combattait pour Israël.
43 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went back to their tents at Gilgal.
Après quoi Josué et tout Israël avec lui s'en retournèrent au camp à Guilgal.
