Jeremiah 36
1 Now it came about in the fourth year of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, that this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,
La quatrième année de Joakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda, cette parole fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de Yahweh, en ces termes:
2 Take a book and put down in it all the words I have said to you against Israel and against Judah and against all the nations, from the day when my word came to you in the days of Josiah till this day.
« Prends un volume, et tu y écriras toutes les paroles que je t’ai dites contre Israël, contre Juda et contre toutes les nations, depuis le jour où je t’ai parlé, depuis les jours de Josias, jusqu’aujourd’hui.
3 It may be that the people of Judah, hearing of all the evil which it is my purpose to do to them, will be turned, every man from his evil ways; so that they may have my forgiveness for their evil-doing and their sin.
Peut-être que la maison de Juda entendra tout le mal que j’ai dessein de leur faire, afin qu’ils se détournent chacun de sa mauvaise voie, et que je pardonne leur iniquité et leur péché. »
4 Then Jeremiah sent for Baruch, the son of Neriah; and Baruch took down from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the Lord which he had said to him, writing them in a book.
Jérémie appela donc Baruch, fils de Néria; et Baruch écrivit dans le volume, sous la dictée de Jérémie, toutes les paroles que Yahweh avait dites à celui-ci.
5 And Jeremiah gave orders to Baruch, saying, I am shut up, and am not able to go into the house of the Lord:
Et Jérémie donna cet ordre à Baruch, en disant: « Je suis empêché, et ne puis aller dans la maison de Yahweh.
6 So you are to go, reading there from the book, which you have taken down from my mouth, the words of the Lord, in the hearing of the people in the Lord's house, on a day when they go without food, and in the hearing of all the men of Judah who have come out from their towns.
Tu iras donc, toi, et tu liras, dans le volume que tu as écrit sous ma dictée, les paroles de Yahweh aux oreilles du peuple, dans la maison de Yahweh, le jour du jeûne; tu les liras aussi aux oreilles de tous ceux de Juda qui seront venus de leurs villes.
7 It may be that their prayer for grace will go up to the Lord, and that every man will be turned from his evil ways: for great is the wrath and the passion made clear by the Lord against this people.
Peut-être que leur supplication arrivera devant Yahweh, et qu’ils se détourneront chacun de sa mauvaise voie; car grande est la colère et l’indignation que Yahweh a exprimées contre ce peuple. »
8 And Baruch, the son of Neriah, did as Jeremiah the prophet gave him orders to do, reading from the book the words of the Lord in the Lord's house.
Et Baruch, fils de Néria, fit tout ce que Jérémie le prophète lui avait commandé, lisant dans le livre les paroles de Yahweh, dans la maison de Yahweh.
9 Now it came about in the fifth year of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, that it was given out publicly that all the people in Jerusalem, and all the people who came from the towns of Judah to Jerusalem, were to keep from food before the Lord.
La cinquième année de Joakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda, le neuvième mois, on publia un jeûne devant Yahweh, pour tout le peuple de Jérusalem et pour tout le peuple qui viendrait des villes de Juda à Jérusalem.
10 Then Baruch gave a public reading of the words of Jeremiah from the book, in the house of the Lord, in the room of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan the scribe, in the higher square, as one goes in by the new doorway of the Lord's house, in the hearing of all the people.
Alors Baruch lut dans le livre les paroles de Yahweh, dans la maison de Yahweh, dans la chambre de Gamarias, fils de Saphan, le secrétaire, dans le parvis supérieur, à l’entrée de la porte Neuve de la maison de Yahweh, aux oreilles de tout le peuple.
11 And Micaiah, the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, after hearing all the words of the Lord from the book,
Michée, fils de Gamarias, fils de Saphan, entendit toutes les paroles de Yahweh contenues dans le livre.
12 Went down to the king's house, to the scribe's room: and all the rulers were seated there, Elishama the scribe and Delaiah, the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan, the son of Achbor, and Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah, the son of Hananiah, and all the rulers.
Il descendit à la maison du roi, dans la chambre du secrétaire; et voici que là étaient assis tous les chefs, Elisama, le secrétaire, Dalaïas, fils de Séméïas, Elnathan, fils d’Achobor, Gamarias, fils de Saphan, Sédécias, fils de Hananias, et tous les chefs.
13 Then Micaiah gave them an account of all the words which had come to his ears when Baruch was reading the book to the people.
Et Michée leur rapporta toutes les paroles qu’il avait entendues lorsque Baruch lisait dans le livre, aux oreilles du peuple.
14 So all the rulers sent Jehudi, the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, Take in your hand the book from which you have been reading to the people and come. So Baruch, the son of Neriah, took the book in his hand and came down to them.
Alors tous les chefs envoyèrent vers Baruch Judi, fils de Nathanias, fils de Sélémias, fils de Chusi, pour lui dire: « Prends le volume dans lequel tu as lu aux oreilles du peuple, et viens! » Baruch, fils de Néria, prit le volume et se rendit auprès d’eux.
15 Then they said to him, Be seated now, and give us a reading from it. So Baruch did so, reading it to them.
Ils lui dirent: « Assieds-toi, et lis ce livre à nos oreilles! » Et Baruch le lut à leurs oreilles.
16 Now it came about that, after hearing all the words, they said to one another in fear, We will certainly give the king an account of all these words.
Lorsqu’ils eurent entendu toutes ces paroles, ils se regardèrent avec effroi les uns les autres, et dirent à Baruch: « Il faut que nous rapportions au roi toutes ces paroles. »
17 And questioning Baruch, they said, Say now, how did you put all these words down in writing from his mouth?
Puis ils interrogèrent Baruch en ces termes: « Déclare-nous comment tu as écrit toutes ces paroles sorties de sa bouche. »
18 Then Baruch, answering, said, He said all these things to me by word of mouth, and I put them down with ink in the book.
Baruch leur dit: « Il m’a dicté de sa bouche toutes ces paroles, et je les ai écrites sur le livre avec de l’encre. »
19 Then the rulers said to Baruch, Go and put yourself in a safe place, you and Jeremiah, and let no man have knowledge of where you are.
Alors les chefs dirent à Baruch: « Va, cache-toi, ainsi que Jérémie, et que personne ne sache où vous êtes. »
20 Then they went into the open square to the king; but the book they put away in the room of Elishama the scribe; and they gave the king an account of all the words.
Ils entrèrent ensuite chez le roi dans la cour, laissant le volume dans la chambre d’Elisama, le secrétaire, et ils racontèrent aux oreilles du roi toute l’affaire.
21 So the king sent Jehudi to get the book, and he took it from the room of Elishama the scribe. And Jehudi gave a reading of it in the hearing of the king and all the rulers who were by the king's side.
Le roi envoya Judi pour prendre le volume; et Judi le prit dans la chambre d’Elisama, le secrétaire, et il le lut aux oreilles du roi et aux oreilles de tous les chefs qui se tenaient debout devant le roi.
22 Now the king was seated in the winter house, and a fire was burning in the fireplace in front of him.
Or le roi était assis dans l’appartement d’hiver, au neuvième mois, et le brasier était allumé devant lui.
23 And it came about that whenever Jehudi, in his reading, had got through three or four divisions, the king, cutting them with his penknife, put them into the fire, till all the book was burned up in the fire which was burning in the fireplace.
Dès que Judi avait lu trois ou quatre colonnes, le roi coupait le livre avec le canif du secrétaire, et le jetait dans le feu du brasier, jusqu’à ce que tout le volume fût consumé par le feu du brasier.
24 But they had no fear and gave no signs of grief, not the king or any of his servants, after hearing all these words.
Le roi et tous ses serviteurs qui entendirent toutes ces paroles, ne furent point effrayés et ne déchirèrent point leurs vêtements.
25 And Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had made a strong request to the king not to let the book be burned, but he would not give ear to them.
Pourtant Elnathan, Dalaïas et Gamarias avaient fait des instances auprès du roi pour qu’il ne brûlât pas le volume; mais il ne les avait pas écoutés.
26 And the king gave orders to Jerahmeel, the king's son, and Seraiah, the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah, the son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet: but the Lord kept them safe.
Puis le roi ordonna à Jérémiel, fils du roi, et à Saraïas, fils d’Ezriel, et à Sélémias, fils d’Abdéel, de saisir Baruch, le secrétaire, et Jérémie, le prophète; mais Yahweh les cacha.
27 Then after the book, in which Baruch had put down the words of Jeremiah, had been burned by the king, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying,
Et la parole de Yahweh fut adressée à Jérémie, après que le roi eut brûlé le volume avec les paroles que Baruch avait écrites sous la dictée de Jérémie, en ces termes:
28 Take another book and put down in it all the words which were in the first book, which Jehoiakim, king of Judah, put into the fire.
Va prendre un autre volume, et tu y écriras toutes les premières paroles qui étaient dans le premier volume que Joakim, roi de Juda, a brûlé.
29 And about Jehoiakim, king of Judah, you are to say, This is what the Lord has said: You have put this book into the fire, saying, Why have you put in it that the king of Babylon will certainly come, causing the destruction of this land and putting an end to every man and beast in it?
Et tu diras à Joakim, roi de Juda: Ainsi parle Yahweh: Toi, tu as brûlé ce volume, en disant: « Pourquoi y as-tu écrit que le roi de Babylone viendra certainement, qu’il dévastera ce pays et qu’il en fera disparaître hommes et bêtes? »
30 For this reason the Lord has said of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, He will have no son to take his place on the seat of David: his dead body will be put out to undergo the heat of the day and the cold of the night.
C’est pourquoi ainsi parle Yahweh touchant Joakim, roi de Juda: Il n’aura pas un des siens assis sur le trône de David; et son cadavre sera jeté dehors, à la chaleur pendant le jour, et au froid pendant la nuit.
31 And I will send punishment on him and on his seed and on his servants for their evil-doing; I will send on them and on the people of Jerusalem and the men of Judah, all the evil which I said against them, but they did not give ear.
Je punirai sur lui, sur sa race et sur ses serviteurs leur iniquité, et je ferai venir sur eux, sur les habitants de Jérusalem et sur les hommes de Juda, tous le mal que je leur ai annoncé sans qu’ils m’aient écouté.
32 Then Jeremiah took another book, and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who put down in it, from the mouth of Jeremiah, all the words of the book which had been burned in the fire by Jehoiakim, king of Judah: and in addition a number of other words of the same sort.
Jérémie prit donc un autre volume et le donna à Baruch, fils de Nérias, le secrétaire; et Baruch y écrivit, sous la dictée de Jérémie, toutes les paroles du livre que Joakim, roi de Juda, avait brûlé au feu; et beaucoup d’autres paroles semblables y furent ajoutées.
