Genesis 19
1 And at nightfall the two angels came to Sodom; and Lot was seated at the way into the town: and when he saw them he got up and came before them, falling down on his face to the earth.
Cependant les deux Anges vinrent à Sodome vers le soir, et Lot étant assis à la porte de la ville. Dès qu’il les eut vus, il se leva et alla au-devant d’eux, et se prosterna, incliné vers la terre.
2 And he said, My masters, come now into your servant's house and take your rest there for the night, and let your feet be washed; and early in the morning you may go on your way. And they said, Not so, but we will take our night's rest in the street.
Et il dit: Je vous conjure, seigneurs, venez dans la maison de votre serviteur, et demeurez-y; lavez vos pieds, et dès le matin vous continuerez votre route. Ils répondirent: Point du tout; mais c’est sur la place que nous demeurerons.
3 But he made his request more strongly, so they went with him into his house; and he got food ready for them, and made unleavened bread, of which they took.
Mais il les força par ses instances de venir chez lui; et lorsqu’ils furent entrés dans sa maison, il leur prépara un repas, et il fit cuire des azymes; et ils mangèrent.
4 But before they had gone to bed, the men of the town, all the men of Sodom, came round the house, young and old, from every part of the town;
Mais avant qu’ils allassent se coucher, les hommes de la ville environnèrent la maison, depuis l’enfant jusqu’au vieillard, tout le peuple ensemble.
5 And crying out to Lot, they said, Where are the men who came to your house this night? Send them out to us, so that we may take our pleasure with them.
Et ils appelèrent Lot et lui dirent: Où sont les hommes qui sont entrés chez toi cette nuit? Amène-les ici, afin que nous les connaissions.
6 And Lot went out to them in the doorway, shutting the door after him.
Lot étant sorti vers eux, et ayant fermé derrière lui la porte, dit:
7 And he said, My brothers, do not this evil.
Ne faites pas, je vous prie, mes frères, ne faites pas ce mal.
8 See now, I have two unmarried daughters; I will send them out to you so that you may do to them whatever seems good to you: only do nothing to these men, for this is why they have come under the shade of my roof.
J’ai deux filles qui n’ont pas encore connu d’hommes: je vous les amènerai, et vous ferez d’elles ce qui vous plaira, pourvu qu’à ces hommes vous ne fassiez aucun mal; car ils sont venus à l’ombre de mon toit.
9 And they said, Give way there. This one man, they said, came here from a strange country, and will he now be our judge? now we will do worse to you than to them; and pushing violently against Lot, they came near to get the door broken in.
Mais ils répondirent: Retire-toi d’ici. Et de nouveau: Tu es venu ici, dirent-ils, comme étranger; est-ce pour t’ériger en juge. C’est donc toi-même que nous maltraiterons plus qu’eux. Et ils faisaient à Lot la plus grande violence; et déjà ils étaient près d’enfoncer la porte.
10 But the men put out their hands and took Lot into the house to them, shutting the door again.
Mais voilà que les hommes avancèrent la main, firent rentrer Lot auprès d’eux et fermèrent la porte;
11 But the men who were outside the door they made blind, all of them, small and great, so that they were tired out with looking for the door.
Et ceux qui étaient dehors, ils les frappèrent d’aveuglement, depuis le plus petit Jusqu’au plus grand, en sorte qu’ils ne pouvaient retrouver la porte.
12 Then the men said to Lot, Are there any others of your family here? sons-in-law or sons or daughters, take them all out of this place;
Alors ils dirent à Lot: As-tu ici quelqu’un des tiens, un gendre, ou des fils, ou des filles? tous ceux qui sont à toi, fais-les sortir de cette ville;
13 For we are about to send destruction on this place, because a great outcry against them has come to the ears of the Lord; and the Lord has sent us to put an end to the town.
Car nous détruirons ce lieu, parce que leur clameur s’est élevée de plus en plus devant le Seigneur qui nous a envoyés pour les perdre.
14 And Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were married to his daughters, Come, let us go out of this place, for the Lord is about to send destruction on the town. But his sons-in-law did not take him seriously.
Lot étant donc sorti, parla à ses gendres, qui devaient épouser ses filles, et dit: Levez-vous, sortez de ce lieu; parce que le Seigneur détruira cette ville. Et il leur sembla parler comme en se jouant.
15 And when morning came, the angels did all in their power to make Lot go, saying, Get up quickly and take your wife and your two daughters who are here, and go, for fear that you come to destruction in the punishment of the town.
Mais lorsqu’il fut matin, les Anges le pressaient, disant: Lève-toi, prends ta femme, et les deux filles que tu as, afin que tu ne périsses pas, toi aussi, dans le châtiment de la ville.
16 But while he was waiting, the men took him and his wife and his daughters by the hand, for the Lord had mercy on them, and put them outside the town.
Mais lui différant, ils prirent sa main et la main de sa femme et de ses deux filles, parce que le Seigneur lui faisait grâce.
17 And when they had put them out, he said, Go for your life, without looking back or waiting in the lowland; go quickly to the mountain or you will come to destruction.
Et ils l’emmenèrent, le mirent hors de la ville: et là, ils lui parlèrent, disant: Sauve ton âme; ne regarde point derrière toi, et ne t’arrête dans aucune contrée d’alentour; mais sauve-toi sur la montagne, de peur que tu ne périsses toi aussi avec les autres.
18 And Lot said to them, Not so, O my Lord;
Et Lot leur répondit: Je vous prie, mon Seigneur,
19 See now, your servant has had grace in your eyes and great is your mercy in keeping my life from destruction, but I am not able to get as far as the mountain before evil overtakes me and death;
Puisque votre serviteur a trouvé grâce devant vous et que vous avez signalé la miséricorde que vous m’avez faite, pour sauver mon âme, non, je ne puis être sauvé sur la montagne; il est à craindre que le mal ne m’atteigne, et que je ne meure.
20 This town, now, is near, and it is a little one: O, let me go there (is it not a little one?) so that my life may be safe.
Cette ville ici près, où je puis m’enfuir, est petite et j’y serai sauvé; n’est-elle pas de peu d’étendue? et mon âme n’y vivra-t-elle pas?
21 And he said, See, I have given you your request in this one thing more: I will not send destruction on this town.
Et il lui répondit: Voici que même en cela, j’ai accueilli ta prière, de ne pas détruire la ville pour laquelle tu m’as parlé.
22 Go there quickly, for I am not able to do anything till you have come there. For this reason, the town was named Zoar.
Hâte-toi, et tu y seras sauvé; car je ne pourrai rien faire jusqu’à ce que tu y sois entré. C’est pourquoi cette ville fut appelée du nom de Ségor.
23 The sun was up when Lot came to Zoar.
Le soleil se leva sur la terre, et Lot entra dans Ségor.
24 Then the Lord sent fire and flaming smoke raining down from heaven on Sodom and Gomorrah.
Le Seigneur donc fit pleuvoir sur Sodome et Gomorrhe du soufre et du feu venus du ciel d’auprès du Seigneur;
25 And he sent destruction on those towns, with all the lowland and all the people of those towns and every green thing in the land.
Et il détruisit ces villes, et toute la contrée d’alentour, et tous les habitants des villes, et toutes les plantes de la terre.
26 But Lot's wife, looking back, became a pillar of salt.
Et la femme de Lot, regardant derrière elle, fut changée en une statue de sel.
27 And Abraham got up early in the morning and went to the place where he had been talking with the Lord:
Or Abraham se levant le matin, et venant où il avait été auparavant avec le Seigneur,
28 And looking in the direction of Sodom and Gomorrah and the lowland, he saw the smoke of the land going up like the smoke of an oven.
Regarda Sodome et Gomorrhe, et toute la terre de cette contrée, et il vit une fumée qui montait de la terre, comme la fumée d’une fournaise.
29 So it came about that when God sent destruction on the towns of the lowland, he kept his word to Abraham, and sent Lot safely away when he put an end to the towns where he was living.
Mais, lorsque le Seigneur détruisait les villes de cette contrée, s’étant souvenu d’Abraham, il sauva Lot de la ruine de ces villes dans lesquelles il avait habité.
30 Then Lot went up out of Zoar to the mountain, and was living there with his two daughters, for fear kept him from living in Zoar: and he and his daughters made their living-place in a hole in the rock.
Et Lot sortit de Ségor; il se retira sur la montagne, et ses deux filles avec lui (car il craignait de demeurer dans Ségor), et il demeura dans la caverne, lui et ses deux filles avec lui.
31 And the older daughter said to her sister, Our father is old, and there is no man to be a husband to us in the natural way:
Or l’aînée dit à la plus jeune: Notre père est vieux, et il n’est resté sur la terre aucun homme qui puisse nous épouser selon la coutume de toute la terre.
32 Come, let us give our father much wine, and we will go into his bed, so that we may have offspring by our father,
Viens, et enivrons-le de vin, et dormons avec lui, afin que nous puissions par notre père conserver une postérité.
33 And that night they made their father take much wine; and the older daughter went into his bed; and he had no knowledge of when she went in or when she went away.
Elles donnèrent donc à leur père du vin à boire cette nuit-là; et l’aînée vint et dormit avec son père; mais celui-ci ne s’aperçut, ni quand sa fille se coucha, ni quand elle se leva.
34 And on the day after, the older daughter said to the younger, Last night I was with my father; let us make him take much wine this night again, and do you go to him, so that we may have offspring by our father.
Et le lendemain, l’aînée dit à la plus jeune: Voilà que j’ai dormi hier avec mon père; donnons-lui à boire du vin encore cette nuit, et tu dormiras avec lui, afin que nous conservions une postérité de notre père.
35 And that night again they made their father take much wine; and the younger daughter went into his bed; and he had no knowledge of when she went in or when she went away.
Et elles donnèrent encore cette nuit-là à leur père du vin à boire; et la plus jeune fille dormit avec lui; et encore cette fois, il ne s’aperçut pas quand elle se coucha, ou quand elle se leva.
36 And so the two daughters of Lot were with child by their father.
Ainsi les deux filles de Lot conçurent de leur père.
37 And the older daughter had a son, and she gave him the name Moab: he is the father of the Moabites to this day.
L’aînée enfanta un fils, et l’appela du nom de Moab; c’est le père des Moabites, jusqu’au présent jour.
38 And the younger had a son and gave him the name Ben-ammi: from him come the children of Ammon to this day.
La plus jeune aussi enfanta un fils, et l’appela du nom d’Ammon, c’est-à-dire le fils de mon peuple; c’est le père des Ammonites, jusqu’aujourd’hui.
