Exodus 1
1 Now these are the names of the sons of Israel who came into Egypt; every man and his family came with Jacob.
Voici les noms des fils d’Israël, venus en Égypte; ils y accompagnèrent Jacob, chacun avec sa famille:
2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah;
Ruben, Siméon, Lévi et Juda;
3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin;
Issachar, Zabulon et Benjamin;
4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
Dan et Nephtali, Gad et Aser.
5 All the offspring of Jacob were seventy persons: and Joseph had come to Egypt before them.
Toutes les personnes composant la lignée de Jacob étaient au nombre de soixante-dix. Pour Joseph, il était déjà en Égypte.
6 Then Joseph came to his end, and all his brothers, and all that generation.
Joseph mourut, ainsi que tous ses frères, ainsi que toute cette génération.
7 And the children of Israel were fertile, increasing very greatly in numbers and in power; and the land was full of them.
Or, les enfants d’Israël avaient augmenté, pullulé, étaient devenus prodigieusement nombreux et ils remplissaient la contrée.
8 Now a new king came to power in Egypt, who had no knowledge of Joseph.
Un roi nouveau s’éleva sur l’Égypte, lequel n’avait point
9 And he said to his people, See, the people of Israel are greater in number and in power than we are:
Il dit à son peuple: "Voyez, la population des enfants d’Israël surpasse et domine la nôtre.
10 Let us take care for fear that their numbers may become even greater, and if there is a war, they may be joined with those who are against us, and make an attack on us, and go up out of the land.
Eh bien! usons d’expédients contre elle; autrement, elle s’accroîtra encore et alors, survienne une guerre, ils pourraient se joindre à nos ennemis, nous combattre et sortir de la province."
11 So they put overseers of forced work over them, in order to make their strength less by the weight of their work. And they made store-towns for Pharaoh, Pithom and Raamses.
Et l’on imposa à ce peuple des officiers de corvée pour l’accabler de labeurs et il bâtit pour Pharaon des villes d’approvisionnement, Pithom et Ramessès.
12 But the more cruel they were to them, the more their number increased, till all the land was full of them. And the children of Israel were hated by the Egyptians.
Mais, plus on l’opprimait, plus sa population grossissait et débordait et ils conçurent de l’aversion pour les enfants d’Israël.
13 And they gave the children of Israel even harder work to do:
Les Égyptiens accablèrent les enfants d’Israël de rudes besognes.
14 And made their lives bitter with hard work, making building-material and bricks, and doing all sorts of work in the fields under the hardest conditions.
Ils leur rendirent la vie amère par des travaux pénibles sur l’argile et la brique, par des corvées rurales, outre les autres labeurs qu’ils leur imposèrent tyranniquement.
15 And the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew women who gave help at the time of childbirth (the name of the one was Shiphrah and the name of the other Puah),
Le roi d’Égypte s’adressa aux sages femmes hébreues, qui se nommaient, l’une Chifra, l’autre Poûa
16 When you are looking after the Hebrew women in childbirth, if it is a son you are to put him to death; but if it is a daughter, she may go on living.
et il dit: "Lorsque vous accoucherez les femmes hébreues, vous examinerez les attributs du sexe: si c’est un garçon, faites-le périr; une fille, qu’elle vive."
17 But the women had the fear of God, and did not do as the king of Egypt said, but let the male children go on living.
Mais les sages-femmes craignaient Dieu: elles ne firent point ce que leur avait dit le roi d’Égypte, elles laissèrent vivre les garçons.
18 And the king of Egypt sent for the women, and said to them, Why have you done this, and let the male children go on living?
Le roi d’Égypte manda les sages-femmes et leur dit: "Pourquoi avez-vous agi ainsi, avez-vous laissé vivre les garçons?"
19 And they said to Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are strong, and the birth takes place before we come to them.
Les sages-femmes répondirent à Pharaon: "C’Est que les femmes des Hébreux ne sont pas comme celles des Égyptiens, elles sont vigoureuses et avant que la sage-femme soit arrivée près d’elles, elles sont délivrées."
20 And the blessing of God was on these women: and the people were increased in number and became very strong.
Le Seigneur bénit les sages-femmes et le peuple multiplia et s’accrut considérablement.
21 And because the women who took care of the Hebrew mothers had the fear of God, he gave them families.
Or, comme les sages-femmes avaient craint le Seigneur et qu’il avait augmenté leurs familles,
22 And Pharaoh gave orders to all his people, saying, Every son who comes to birth is to be put into the river, but every daughter may go on living.
Pharaon donna l’ordre suivant à tout son peuple: "Tout mâle nouveau-né, jetez-le dans le fleuve et toute fille laissez-la vivre."
