Esther 5

1 Now on the third day, Esther put on her queen's robes, and took her place in the inner room of the king's house, facing the king's house: and the king was seated on his high seat in the king's house, facing the doorway of the house.

Or, le troisième jour, Esther se revêtit de vêtements royaux et se présenta dans le vestibule de la maison du roi, lequel était intérieur, contre la chambre du roi: or il était assis sur son trône, dans la chambre du conseil du palais, contre la porte de la maison.

2 And when the king saw Esther the queen waiting in the inner room, looking kindly on her he put out the rod of gold in his hand to her. So Esther came near and put her fingers on the top of the rod.

Et lorsqu’il vit la reine Esther devant lui, elle plut à ses yeux, et il étendit vers elle le sceptre d’or qu’il avait à la main. Esther, s’approchant, baisa le bout de son sceptre.

3 Then the king said, What is your desire, Queen Esther, and what is your request? I will give it to you, even to the half of my kingdom.

Et le roi lui dit: Que voulez-vous, reine Esther? Quelle est votre demande? Quand vous me demanderiez la moitié de mon royaume, elle vous serait donnée.

4 And Esther in answer said, If it seems good to the king, let the king and Haman come today to the feast which I have made ready for him.

Mais elle répondit: S’il plaît au roi, je vous conjure de venir, et Aman avec vous, au festin que j’ai préparé.

5 Then the king said, Let Haman come quickly, so that what Esther has said may be done. So the king and Haman came to the feast which Esther had made ready.

Et aussitôt le roi: Appelez vite Aman, dit-il, afin qu’il obéisse à la volonté d’Esther. C’est pourquoi le roi et Aman vinrent au festin que la reine leur avait préparé.

6 And while they were drinking wine the king said to Esther, What is your prayer? for it will be given to you and what is your request? for it will be done, even to the half of my kingdom.

Or le roi lui dit, après qu’il eut bu abondamment: Que désirez-vous que je vous donne, et que demandez-vous? Quand vous me demanderiez la moitié de mon royaume, vous l’obtiendriez.

7 Then Esther said in answer, My prayer and my request is this:

Esther lui répondit: Voici ma demande et mes prières:

8 If I have the king's approval, and if it is the king's pleasure to give me my prayer and do my request, let the king and Haman come to the feast which I will make ready for them, and tomorrow I will do as the king has said.

Si j’ai trouvé grâce en présence du roi, et s’il plaît au roi de me donner ce que je demande, et de remplir mon désir, que le roi vienne et Aman au festin que je leur ai préparé, et demain je découvrirai ma volonté au roi.

9 Then on that day Haman went out full of joy and glad in heart; but when he saw Mordecai in the king's doorway, and he did not get to his feet or give any sign of fear before him, Haman was full of wrath against Mordecai.

Aman sortit donc, ce jour-là, joyeux et dispos. Mais, lorsqu’il eut vu Mardochée assis devant la porte du palais, et que non seulement il ne s’était pas levé pour lui, mais qu’une s’était pas même remué de la place où il était assis, il fut fort indigné;

10 But controlling himself, he went to his house; and he sent for his friends and Zeresh, his wife.

Et dissimulant sa colère, il retourna à sa maison, et réunit auprès de lui ses amis et Zarès, sa femme.

11 And he gave them an account of the glories of his wealth, and the number of children he had, and the ways in which he had been honoured by the king, and how he had put him over the captains and servants of the king.

Or il leur exposa la grandeur de ses richesses, le grand nombre de ses enfants, et à quelle grande gloire le roi l’avait élevé au-dessus de tous les grands de la cour et de ses serviteurs.

12 And Haman said further, Truly, Esther the queen let no man but myself come in to the feast which she had made ready for the king; and tomorrow again I am to be her guest with the king.

Et après cela il dit: La reine Esther aussi n’a appelé nul autre au festin avec le roi, hors moi: et c’est chez elle qu’encore demain je dois dîner avec le roi.

13 But all this is nothing to me while I see Mordecai the Jew seated by the king's doorway.

Et quoique j’aie tous ces avantages, je crois que je n’ai rien, tant que je verrai Mardochée, le Juif, assis devant la porte du roi.

14 Then his wife Zeresh and all his friends said to him, Let a pillar, fifty cubits high, be made ready for hanging him, and in the morning get the king to give orders for the hanging of Mordecai: then you will be able to go to the feast with the king with a glad heart. And Haman was pleased with the suggestion, and he had the pillar made.

Or Zarès, sa femme, et tous les autres, ses amis, lui dirent: Commande qu’on prépare une potence fort élevée, ayant cinquante coudées de hauteur, et dis dès le matin au roi qu’on y suspende Mardochée, et c’est ainsi que, joyeux, tu iras avec le roi au festin. Ce conseil lui plut, et il commanda qu’on préparât une croix fort élevée.
