Deuteronomy 2
1 Then we went back, journeying into the waste land by the way to the Red Sea, as the Lord had said to me: and we were a long time going round Mount Seir.
Alors nous retournâmes en arrière, et nous allâmes, au désert par le chemin de la mer Rouge, comme l'Eternel m'avait dit, et nous tournoyâmes longtemps près de la montagne de Séhir.
2 And the Lord said to me,
Et l'Eternel parla à moi, en disant:
3 You have been journeying round this mountain long enough: now go to the north;
Vous avez assez tournoyé près de cette montagne, tournez-vous vers le Septentrion.
4 And give the people orders, saying, You are about to go through the land of your brothers, the children of Esau, who are living in Seir; and they will have fear of you; so take care what you do:
Et commande au peuple, en disant: Vous allez passer la frontière de vos frères, les enfants d'Esaü qui demeurent en Séhir, et ils auront peur de vous, mais soyez bien sur vos gardes.
5 Make no attack on them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even space enough for a man's foot: because I have given Mount Seir to Esau for his heritage.
N'ayez point de démêlé avec eux; car je ne vous donnerai rien de leur pays, non pas même pour y pouvoir asseoir la plante du pied, parce que j'ai donné à Esaü la montagne de Séhir en héritage.
6 You may get food for your needs from them for a price, and water for drinking.
Vous achèterez d'eux les vivres à prix d'argent, et vous en mangerez; vous achèterez aussi d'eux l'eau à prix d'argent, et vous en boirez.
7 For the blessing of the Lord your God has been on you in all the work of your hands: he has knowledge of your wanderings through this great waste: these forty years the Lord your God has been with you, and you have been short of nothing.
Car l'Eternel ton Dieu t'a béni dans tout le travail de tes mains; il a connu le chemin que tu as tenu dans ce grand désert, [et] l'Eternel ton Dieu a été avec toi pendant ces quarante ans, [et] rien ne t'a manqué.
8 So we went on past our brothers, the children of Esau, living in Seir, by the road through the Arabah, from Elath and Ezion-geber. And turning, we went by the road through the waste land of Moab.
Or nous nous détournâmes de nos frères les enfants d'Esaü, qui demeuraient en Séhir, depuis le chemin de la campagne, depuis Elath, et depuis Hetsjonguéber; et [de là] nous nous détournâmes et nous passâmes par le chemin du désert de Moab.
9 And the Lord said to me, Make no attack on Moab and do not go to war with them, for I will not give you any of his land: because I have given Ar to the children of Lot for their heritage.
Et l'Eternel me dit: Ne traitez point les Moabites en ennemis, et n'entrez point en guerre avec eux; car je ne te donnerai rien de leur pays en héritage; parce que j'ai donné Har en héritage aux enfants de Lot.
10 (In the past the Emim were living there; a great people, equal in numbers to the Anakim and as tall;
Les Emins y habitaient auparavant; c'était un grand peuple, et en grand nombre, et de haute stature comme les Hanakins.
11 They are numbered among the Rephaim, like the Anakim; but are named Emim by the Moabites.
Et en effet ils ont été réputés pour Réphaïms comme les Hanakins, et les Moabites les appelaient Emins.
12 And the Horites in earlier times were living in Seir, but the children of Esau took their place; they sent destruction on them and took their land for themselves, as Israel did to the land of his heritage which the Lord gave them.)
Les Horiens demeuraient aussi auparavant en Séhir, mais les enfants d'Esaü les en dépossédèrent, et les détruisirent de devant eux, et ils y habitèrent en leur place, ainsi qu'a fait Israël dans le pays de son héritage que l'Eternel lui a donné.
13 Get up now, and go over the stream Zered. So we went over the stream Zered.
[Mais] maintenant levez-vous, et passez le torrent de Zéred; et nous passâmes le torrent de Zéred.
14 Thirty-eight years had gone by from the time when we came away from Kadesh-barnea till we went over the stream Zered; by that time all the generation of the men of war among us were dead, as the Lord had said.
Or le temps que nous avons marché depuis Kadès-barné, jusqu'à ce que nous avons eu passé le torrent de Zéred, a été de trente et huit ans, jusqu'à ce que toute cette génération-là, [savoir] les gens de guerre, a été consumée du milieu du camp, comme l'Eternel le leur avait juré.
15 For the hand of the Lord was against them, working their destruction, till all were dead.
Aussi la main de l'Eternel a été contr'eux pour les détruire du milieu du camp, jusqu'à ce qu'il les ait consumés.
16 So when death had overtaken all the men of war among the people,
Or il est arrivé qu'après que tous les hommes de guerre d'entre le peuple ont été consumés par la mort;
17 The word of the Lord came to me, saying,
L'Eternel m'a parlé et m'a dit:
18 You are about to go by Ar, the limit of the country of Moab;
Tu vas passer aujourd'hui la frontière de Moab, [savoir] Har.
19 And when you come near the land of the children of Ammon, give them no cause of trouble and do not make war on them, for I will not give you any of the land of the children of Ammon for your heritage: because I have given it to the children of Lot.
Tu approcheras vis à vis des enfants de Hammon; tu ne les traiteras point en ennemis, et tu n'auras point de démêlé avec eux; car je ne te donnerai rien du pays des enfants de Hammon en héritage, parce que je l'ai donné en héritage aux enfants de Lot.
20 (That land is said to have been a land of the Rephaim, for Rephaim had been living there in earlier times, but they were named Zamzummim by the Ammonites;
Ce [pays] aussi a été réputé pays des Réphaïms; [car] les Réphaïms y habitaient auparavant, et les Hammonites les appelaient Zamzummins;
21 They were a great people, tall as the Anakim, and equal to them in number; but the Lord sent destruction on them and the children of Ammon took their place, living in their land;
Qui étaient un peuple grand et nombreux, et de haute stature comme les Hanakins, mais l'Eternel les fit détruire de devant eux, et ils les dépossédèrent, et [y] habitèrent en leur place.
22 As he did for the children of Esau living in Seir, when he sent destruction on the Horites before them, and they took their land where they are living to this day:
Comme il avait fait aux enfants d'Esaü qui demeuraient en Séhir, quand il fit détruire les Horiens de devant eux; et ainsi ils les dépossédèrent, et y habitèrent en leur place jusqu'à ce jour.
23 And the Avvim, living in the small towns as far as Gaza, came to destruction by the hands of the Caphtorim who came out from Caphtor and took their land.)
Or quant aux Hauviens, qui demeuraient en Hatsérim, jusqu'à Gaza, ils furent détruits par les Caphtorins, qui étant sortis de Caphtor, vinrent demeurer en leur place.
24 Get up now, and go on your journey, crossing over the valley of the Arnon: see, I have given into your hands Sihon, the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and all his land: go forward to make it yours, and make war on him,
[L'Eternel dit aussi]: Levez-vous, et partez, et passez le torrent d'Arnon; Regarde, j'ai livré entre tes mains Sihon, Roi de Hesbon Amorrhéen, avec son pays, commence d'en prendre possession, et fais-lui la guerre.
25 From now on I will put the fear of you in all peoples under heaven, who, hearing of you, will be shaking with fear and grief of heart because of you.
Je commencerai aujourd'hui à jeter la frayeur et la peur de toi sur les peuples qui sont sous tous les cieux, car ayant ouï parler de toi ils trembleront, et seront en angoisse à cause de ta présence.
26 Then from the waste land of Kedemoth I sent representatives to Sihon, king of Heshbon, with words of peace, saying,
Alors j'envoyai du désert de Kédémoth des messagers à Sihon, Roi de Hesbon, avec des paroles de paix, disant:
27 Let me go through your land: I will keep to the highway, not turning to the right or to the left;
Que je passe par ton pays et j'irai par le grand chemin, sans me détourner ni à droite ni à gauche.
28 Let me have food, at a price, for my needs, and water for drinking: only let me go through on foot;
Tu me feras distribuer des vivres pour de l'argent, afin que je mange; tu me donneras de l'eau pour de l'argent, afin que je boive; seulement que j'y passe de mes pieds.
29 As the children of Esau did for me in Seir and the Moabites in Ar; till I have gone over Jordan into the land which the Lord our God is giving us.
Ainsi que m'ont fait les enfants d'Esaü qui demeurent en Séhir, les Moabites qui demeurent à Har, jusqu'à ce que je passe le Jourdain pour entrer au pays que l'Eternel notre Dieu, nous donne.
30 But Sihon, king of Heshbon, would not let us go through; for the Lord your God made his spirit hard and his heart strong, so that he might give him up into your hands as at this day.
Mais Sihon, Roi de Hesbon, ne voulut point nous laisser passer par son pays, car l'Eternel ton Dieu avait endurci son esprit, et roidi son cœur, afin de le livrer entre tes mains, comme [il paraît] aujourd'hui.
31 And the Lord said to me, See, from now on I have given Sihon and his land into your hands: go forward now to take his land and make it yours.
Et l'Eternel me dit: Regarde, j'ai commencé de te livrer Sihon avec son pays; commence à posséder son pays, pour le tenir en héritage.
32 Then Sihon came out against us with all his people, to make an attack on us at Jahaz.
Sihon donc sortit contre nous, lui et tout son peuple pour combattre en Jahats.
33 And the Lord our God gave him into our hands; and we overcame him and his sons and all his people.
Mais l'Eternel notre Dieu nous le livra, et nous le battîmes, lui, ses enfants, et tout son peuple.
34 At that time we took all his towns, and gave them over to complete destruction, together with men, women, and children; we had no mercy on any:
Et en ce temps-là nous prîmes toutes ses villes; et nous détruisîmes à la façon de l'interdit toutes les villes où étaient les hommes, les femmes, et les petits enfants, et nous n'y laissâmes personne de reste.
35 Only the cattle we took for ourselves, with the goods from the towns we had taken.
Seulement nous pillâmes les bêtes pour nous, et le butin des villes que nous avions prises.
36 From Aroer on the edge of the valley of the Arnon and from the town in the valley as far as Gilead, no town was strong enough to keep us out; the Lord our God gave them all into our hands:
Depuis Haroher, qui est sur le bord du torrent d'Arnon, et la ville qui est dans le torrent, jusqu'en Galaad, il n'y eut pas une ville qui pût se garantir de nous; l'Eternel notre Dieu nous les livra toutes.
37 But you did not go near the land of the children of Ammon, that is, all the side of the river Jabbok or the towns of the hill-country, wherever the Lord our God had said we were not to go.
Seulement tu ne t'es point approché du pays des enfants de Hammon, ni d'aucun endroit qui touche le torrent de Jabbok, ni des villes de la montagne, ni d'aucun [lieu] que l'Eternel notre Dieu nous eût défendu [de conquérir].
