1 Samuel 25
1 And death came to Samuel; and all Israel came together, weeping for him, and put his body in its resting-place in his house at Ramah. Then David went down to the waste land of Maon.
Et Samuel mourut; et tout Israël se rassembla pour pleurer sur lui, et on l'inhuma dans la ville d'Armathem. Cependant David s'en retourna au désert de Maon.
2 Now there was a man in Maon whose business was in Carmel; he was a great man and had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats: and he was cutting the wool of his sheep in Carmel.
Il y avait alors en Maon un homme d'une très grande taille, et ses troupeaux étaient sur le mont Carmel; il possédait trois mille brebis et mille chèvres; or, il était à tondre ses brebis sur le Carmel.
3 Now this man was named Nabal, and his wife's name was Abigail: she was a woman of good sense and pleasing looks: but the man was cruel and evil in his ways; he was of the family of Caleb.
L'homme s'appelait Nabal, et sa femme Abigaïl, femme excellente par l'intelligence, et très belle de visage; mais l'homme était dur, méchant dans ses habitudes; c'était un homme grossier.
4 And David had word in the waste land that Nabal was cutting the wool of his sheep.
David apprit dans le désert que Nabal, du Carmel, tondait ses brebis.
5 And David sent ten young men, and said to them, Go up to Carmel and go to Nabal, and say kind words to him in my name;
Et il envoya dix jeunes serviteurs, leur disant: Montez sur le Carmel, allez trouver Nabal et saluez-le en mon nom.
6 And say this to my brother, May all be well for you: peace be to you and your house and all you have.
Voici ce que vous lui direz: Bonne santé à toi pour toujours, prospérité à ta maison et à tout ce que tu possèdes.
7 I have had word that you have wool-cutters: now the keepers of your sheep have been with us, and we have done them no evil, and taken nothing of theirs while they were in Carmel.
Or, voici que je viens d'apprendre que tes bergers faisaient la tonte; ce sont ceux qui étaient avec nous dans le désert; nous ne leur avons jamais fait obstacle. Nous n'avons rien exigé d'eux, aussi longtemps qu'ils ont demeuré sur le Carmel.
8 If your young men are questioned they will say the same thing. So now, let my young men have grace in your eyes, for we are come at a good time; please give anything you may have by you to your servants and to your son David.
Interroge tes serviteurs, et ils te le déclareront; pour nous, tes serviteurs aussi, puissions-nous trouver grâce à tes yeux, car nous sommes venus en un jour heureux. Donne donc à ton fils David quelque chose que tu aies sous la main.
9 And when David's young men came, they said all this to Nabal, in David's name, and said nothing more.
Les serviteurs partent; ils répètent à Nabal, au nom de David, toutes les paroles que celui-ci leur a dites. Mais Nabal fit un bond en arrière,
10 And Nabal gave them his answer and said, Who is David? who is the son of Jesse? there are a number of servants in these days running away from their masters.
Et répondant aux serviteurs de David, il dit: Qu'est-ce que David? Qu'est-ce que le fils de Jessé? Le monde est plein aujourd'hui de serviteurs qui s'échappent de la maison de leur maître.
11 Am I to take my bread and my wine and the meat I have got ready for my wool-cutters and give it to men coming from I have no idea where?
Oui, je vais prendre mon pain, mon vin, les victimes que j'ai sacrifiées pour mes tondeurs, et je vais les donner à des hommes qui viennent je ne sais d'où!
12 So David's young men, turning away, went back and gave him an account of everything he had said.
Les serviteurs reprirent donc le chemin par lequel ils étaient venus, et ils arrivèrent, et ils rapportèrent cette réponse à David.
13 And David said to his men, Put on your swords, every one of you. And every man put on his sword; and David did the same; and about four hundred men went up with David, and two hundred kept watch over their goods.
Alors, David dit à ses gens: Que chacun de vous ceigne son épée. Et environ quatre cents hommes s'en allèrent avec David; il en resta deux cents auprès des bagages.
14 But one of the young men said to Nabal's wife Abigail, David sent men from the waste land to say kind words to our master, and he gave them a rough answer.
Et l'un des serviteurs de Nabal parla à sa femme Abigaïl, disant: Voilà que David a envoyé du désert des messagers pour bénir notre maître, et il leur a tourné le dos.
15 But these men have been very good to us; they did us no wrong and nothing of ours was touched while we were with them in the fields:
Ce sont des hommes très bienveillants pour nous; ils ne nous ont point fait obstacle, ils n'ont rien exigé de nous, durant tout le temps que nous avons passé près d'eux.
16 But day and night they were like a wall round us while we were with them, looking after the sheep.
Et, tandis que nous étions aux champs, ils étaient pour nous comme un retranchement, nuit et jour, durant tout le temps que nous avons été près d'eux paissant nos troupeaux.
17 So now, give thought to what you are going to do; for evil is in store for our master and all his house: for he is such a good-for-nothing person that it is not possible to say anything to him.
Et maintenant réfléchis, vois ce que tu as à faire; car le malheur fond sur notre maître et sa maison; lui-même est un fils de pestilence, et il n'y a pas à lui parler.
18 Then Abigail quickly took two hundred cakes of bread and two skins full of wine and five sheep ready for cooking and five measures of dry grain and a hundred parcels of dry grapes and two hundred cakes of figs, and put them on asses.
Et Abigaïl se hâta; elle prit deux cents pains, deux vases pleins de vin, cinq brebis apprêtées, cinq éphi de fleur de farine, un gomor de raisins secs, deux cents cabas de figues, et elle les chargea sur des ânes.
19 And she said to her young men, Go on in front of me and I will come after you. But she said nothing to her husband Nabal.
Puis, elle dit à ses serviteurs: Partez devant moi; voilà que je vous suis. Mais elle ne dit rien à son mari.
20 Now while she was going down under cover of the mountain on her ass, David and his men came down against her, and suddenly she came face to face with them.
Or, tandis qu'elle cheminait sur son ânesse et qu'elle descendait cachée par les plis de la montagne, David et ses gens montaient par le même chemin, de sorte qu'elle les rencontra.
21 Now David had said, What was the use of my taking care of this man's goods in the waste land, so that there was no loss of anything which was his? he has only given me back evil for good.
Et David disait: J'ai gardé équitablement dans le désert un homme injuste et tout ce qui lui appartenait, je n'ai jamais ordonné qu'on lui en prît la moindre chose, et il m'a rendu le mal pour le bien.
22 May God's punishment be on David, if when morning comes there is so much as one male of his people still living.
Que le Seigneur punisse David et le punisse encore, si de tout ce qui est à Nabal je laisse jusqu'à demain matin quelque chose en vie, ne fût-ce qu'un chien.
23 And when Abigail saw David, she quickly got off her ass, falling down on her face before him.
Et Abigaïl vit David; aussitôt, elle sauta de son ânesse, elle tomba devant David la face contre terre, et resta prosternée
24 And falling at his feet she said, May the wrong be on me, my lord, on me: let your servant say a word to you, and give ear to the words of your servant.
A ses pieds, disant: Ne fais retomber sur moi que ma propre iniquité, seigneur; que ta servante te parle; écoute les paroles de ta servante;
25 Let my lord give no attention to Nabal, that good-for-nothing: for as his name is, so is he, a man without sense: but I, your servant, did not see the young men whom my lord sent.
Que mon seigneur ne fasse pas attention à cet homme de pestilence; car il est bien ce que son nom indique; il se nomme Nabal (fou), et la folie est avec lui. Mais moi, ta servante, je n'ai point vu les serviteurs de mon seigneur, que tu avais envoyés.
26 So now, my lord, by the living God and by your living soul, seeing that the Lord has kept you from the crime of blood and from taking into your hands the punishment for your wrongs, may all your haters, and those who would do evil to my lord, be like Nabal.
Maintenant, mon seigneur, vive le Seigneur et vive ton âme! D'autant plus que ton Seigneur t'a empêché de verser le sang innocent et de te venger par ta main. Puissent ressembler à Nabal tes ennemis et ceux qui veulent nuire à mon seigneur.
27 And let this offering, which your servant gives to my lord, be given to the young men who are with my lord.
Accepte donc cette bénédiction que ta servante a apportée à mon seigneur; tu la distribueras aux serviteurs qui accompagnent mon seigneur.
28 And may the sin of your servant have forgiveness: for the Lord will certainly make your family strong, because my lord is fighting in the Lord's war; and no evil will be seen in you all your days.
Détourne de ta servante la peine de l'iniquité, car le Seigneur, pour mon seigneur, édifiera certainement une maison sûre; le Seigneur combat pour mon seigneur en toutes ses batailles, et jamais le malheur ne se trouvera avec toi.
29 And though a man has taken up arms against you, putting your life in danger, still the soul of my lord will be kept safe among the band of the living with the Lord your God; and the souls of those who are against you he will send violently away from him, like stones from a bag.
Et si un homme s'élève qui te poursuive, et en veuille à ta vie, l'âme de mon seigneur sera maintenue dans les liens de la vie par la volonté du Seigneur Dieu, et tu feras tournoyer la vie de tes adversaires, comme au milieu d'une fronde.
30 And when the Lord has done for my lord all those good things which he has said he will do for you, and has made you a ruler over Israel;
Et lorsque le Seigneur aura fait à mon seigneur tout le bien qu'il lui a promis, il te donnera la mission de régner sur Israël.
31 Then you will have no cause for grief, and my lord's heart will not be troubled because you have taken life without cause and have yourself given punishment for your wrongs: and when the Lord has been good to you, then give a thought to your servant.
Et mon seigneur n'aura point commis le péché et l'abomination de verser, sans cause, le sang innocent ni de se venger par sa main; et le Seigneur sera bienveillant pour mon seigneur; et tu te souviendras de ta servante, tu seras bienveillant pour elle.
32 And David said to Abigail, May the Lord, the God of Israel, be praised, who sent you to me today:
Et David dit à Abigaïl: Béni soit le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël, qui t'a envoyée aujourd'hui au-devant de moi.
33 A blessing on your good sense and on you, who have kept me today from the crime of blood and from taking into my hands the punishment for my wrongs.
Bénie sois ta résolution; bénie sois-tu toi-même, qui m'as empêché aujourd'hui de verser le sang innocent et de me venger par ma main.
34 For truly, by the living Lord, the God of Israel, who has kept me from doing you evil, if you had not been so quick in coming to me and meeting me, by dawn there would not have been in Nabal's house so much as one male living.
Mais, vive le Seigneur Dieu; vivant d'Israël, qui m'empêche aujourd'hui de te maltraiter! sans ton empressement à venir à ma rencontre, j'avais dit: de ne laisserai rien en vie chez Nabal jusqu'à demain matin.
35 Then David took from her hands her offering: and he said to her, Go back to your house in peace; see, I have given ear to your voice, and taken your offering with respect.
David prit de ses mains tout ce qu'elle lui avait apporté, et il lui dit: Retourne en paix à ta demeure. Vois, je t'ai accordé ce que tu m'as demandé, et je me suis réjoui de ta présence.
36 And Abigail went back to Nabal; and he was feasting in his house like a king; and Nabal's heart was full of joy, for he had taken much wine; so she said nothing to him till dawn came.
Abigaïl rentra donc chez Nabal, et il y avait en sa maison un festin comme un festin de roi; Nabal montrait la joie de son cœur; il était complètement ivre. Jusqu'aux lueurs du matin, sa femme ne lui dit aucune chose, grande ni petite.
37 And in the morning, when the effect of the wine was gone, Nabal's wife gave him an account of all these things, and all the heart went out of him, and he became like stone.
Le jour parut; comme Nabal avait cuvé son vin, elle lui raconta tout; aussitôt le cœur lui manqua et lui-même fut comme une pierre.
38 And about ten days after, the Lord sent disease on Nabal and death came to him.
Il passa en cet état dix jours; puis, le Seigneur l'ayant frappé, il expira.
39 And David, hearing that Nabal was dead, said, May the Lord be praised, who has taken up my cause against Nabal for the shame which he put on me, and has kept back his servant from evil, and has sent on Nabal's head the reward of his evil-doing. And David sent word to Abigail, desiring to take her as his wife.
David l'apprit, et il dit: Béni soit le Seigneur, qui a jugé l'outrage que j'avais reçu de Nabal, et qui a sauvé son serviteur des mains des méchants, et qui a fait retomber l'iniquité de Nabal sur sa tête. Ensuite, David envoya chez Abigaïl, et lui fit parler pour la prendre en mariage.
40 And when David's servants came to Carmel, to Abigail, they said to her, David has sent us to you to take you to him as his wife.
Les serviteurs de David arrivèrent au Carmel chez Abigaïl, et ils lui parlèrent, disant: David nous a envoyés vers toi afin de te prendre pour sa femme.
41 And she got up, and going down on her face to the earth, said, See, I am ready to be a servant-girl, washing the feet of the servants of my lord.
A ces mots, elle se leva et elle se prosterna la face contre terre, et elle dit: Voici ta servante, emploie-la comme une esclave à laver les pieds de tes serviteurs.
42 Then Abigail got up quickly and went on her ass, with five of her young women, after the men whom David had sent; and she became David's wife.
Abigaïl se releva, elle monta sur une ânesse, cinq jeunes filles l'accompagnèrent; elle suivit les serviteurs de David, et elle fut sa femme.
43 And David had taken Ahinoam of Jezreel, to be his wife; these two were his wives.
David avait déjà épousé Achinaam de Jezraël; toutes les deux étaient ses femmes;
44 Now Saul had given his daughter Michal, David's wife, to Palti the son of Laish of Gallim.
Et Saül avait donné sa fille Michol, la femme de David, à Phalti, fils d'Amis de Rhomma.
