1 Samuel 21
1 Then David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest: and Ahimelech was full of fear at meeting David, and said to him, Why are you by yourself, having no man with you?
David se rendit à Nob auprès du sacrificateur Achimélec. Achimélec vint à la rencontre de David en tremblant, et lui dit: « Pourquoi es-tu seul, et n'y a-t-il personne avec toi? ».
2 And David said to Ahimelech the priest, The king has given me orders and has said to me, Say nothing to anyone about the business on which I am sending you and the orders I have given you: and a certain place has been fixed to which the young men are to go.
David répondit au prêtre Achimélec: « Le roi m'a ordonné de faire quelque chose et m'a dit: « Que personne ne sache rien de l'affaire pour laquelle je t'envoie et de ce que je t'ai ordonné. J'ai envoyé les jeunes gens dans un certain lieu.
3 So now, if you have here five cakes of bread, give them into my hand, or whatever you have.
Maintenant, qu'est-ce qui est sous ta main? Donnez-moi, je vous prie, cinq pains en main, ou tout ce qui est disponible. »
4 And the priest, answering David, said, I have no common bread here but there is holy bread; if only the young men have kept themselves from women.
Le prêtre répondit à David: « Je n'ai pas de pain ordinaire, mais il y a du pain saint, si seulement les jeunes gens se sont tenus à l'écart des femmes. »
5 And David in answer said to the priest, Certainly women have been kept from us; and as has been done before when I have gone out the arms of the young men were made holy, even though it was a common journey; how much more today will their arms be made holy.
David prit la parole devant le prêtre et lui dit: « En vérité, les femmes ont été éloignées de nous comme d'habitude ces trois jours. Quand je suis sorti, les vases des jeunes gens étaient saints, bien que ce ne fût qu'un voyage ordinaire. Combien plus aujourd'hui leurs vases seront-ils saints? »
6 So the priest gave him the holy bread: there was no other, only the holy bread which had been taken from before the Lord, so that new bread might be put in its place on the day when it was taken away.
Et le prêtre lui donna des pains saints; car il n'y avait là que le pain de démonstration qui avait été enlevé devant l'Éternel, pour être remplacé par du pain chaud le jour où il avait été enlevé.
7 Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, kept back before the Lord; his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the strongest of Saul's runners.
Or un homme parmi les serviteurs de Saül était là ce jour-là, détenu devant l'Éternel; il s'appelait Doëg, l'Édomite, le meilleur des bergers qui appartenaient à Saül.
8 And David said to Ahimelech, Have you no sword or spear with you here? for I have come without my sword and other arms, because the king's business had to be done quickly.
David dit à Achimélec: « N'y a-t-il pas ici sous ta main une lance ou une épée? Car je n'ai pas apporté avec moi mon épée ou mes armes, parce que les affaires du roi exigeaient la hâte. »
9 And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you put to death in the valley of Elah, is here folded in a cloth at the back of the ephod: take that, if you will, for there is no other sword here. And David said, there is no other sword like that; give it to me.
Le prêtre dit: « Voici l'épée de Goliath le Philistin, que tu as tué dans la vallée d'Elah, et qui est ici enveloppée dans un tissu derrière l'éphod. Si tu veux la prendre, prends-la, car il n'y en a pas d'autre ici que celle-là. » David a dit: « Il n'y en a pas de semblable. Donne-le moi. »
10 Then David got up and went in flight that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish, the king of Gath.
David se leva et s'enfuit ce jour-là par crainte de Saül, et il alla chez Akish, roi de Gath.
11 And the servants of Achish said to him, Is not this David, the king of the land? did they not make songs about him in their dances, saying, Saul has put to death thousands, and David tens of thousands?
Les serviteurs d'Akish lui dirent: « Ce David n'est-il pas le roi du pays? Ne chantaient-ils pas l'un l'autre à son sujet dans les danses, en disant, « Saül a tué ses milliers d'hommes, et David ses dix mille? »
12 And David took these words to heart, fearing Achish, the king of Gath.
David garda ces paroles dans son cœur, et il eut très peur d'Akish, roi de Gath.
13 So changing his behaviour before them, he made it seem as if he was off his head, hammering on the doors of the town, and letting the water from his mouth go down his chin.
Il changea de comportement devant eux et fit semblant d'être fou entre leurs mains, il gribouilla sur les battants de la porte et laissa tomber ses crachats sur sa barbe.
14 Then Achish said to his servants, Look! the man is clearly off his head; why have you let him come before me?
Alors Akish dit à ses serviteurs: « Regardez, vous voyez que cet homme est fou. Pourquoi donc me l'amenez-vous?
15 Are there not enough unbalanced men about me, that you have let this person come and do such tricks before me? is such a man to come into my house?
Est-ce que je manque de fous, pour que vous ayez amené cet homme pour qu'il fasse le fou en ma présence? Cet homme devrait-il entrer dans ma maison? »
