Romans 7
1 Do you not know, brothers (for I am speaking to those who know the law), that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives?
Ignorez-vous donc, frères, — car je parle à des gens qui connaissent la loi — que la loi n'a d'autorité sur une personne, qu'aussi longtemps que celle-ci est en vie?
2 For instance, a married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage.
Ainsi, la femme mariée est liée par la loi à son mari, tant qu'il est vivant; mais si le mari vient à mourir, elle est dégagée de la loi qui la liait à lui.
3 So then, if she is joined to another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law and is not an adulteress, even if she marries another man.
Si donc, du vivant de son mari, elle devient la femme d'un autre, elle sera appelée adultère; mais si le mari meurt, elle est affranchie de la loi, de sorte qu'elle n'est point adultère en devenant la femme d'un autre.
4 Therefore, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God.
De même, mes frères, vous aussi, vous êtes morts à la loi, par le sacrifice du corps de Christ, pour appartenir à un autre, à celui qui est ressuscité des morts afin que nous portions des fruits pour Dieu.
5 For when we lived according to the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, bearing fruit for death.
En effet, lorsque nous vivions selon la chair, les passions mauvaises, excitées par la loi, agissaient dans nos membres et produisaient des fruits pour la mort.
6 But now, having died to what bound us, we have been released from the law, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.
Mais maintenant, étant morts à cette loi qui nous tenait captifs, nous en sommes affranchis, pour servir Dieu sous le régime nouveau de l'Esprit, et non sous le régime vieilli de la lettre.
7 What then shall we say? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed, I would not have been mindful of sin if not for the law. For I would not have been aware of coveting if the law had not said, “Do not covet.”
Que dirions-nous donc? La loi est-elle une puissance de péché? Non certes! Mais je n'ai connu le péché que par la loi; car je n'aurais pas connu la convoitise, si la loi n'eût dit: «Tu ne convoiteras point!»
8 But sin, seizing its opportunity through the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous desire. For apart from the law, sin is dead.
C'est le péché qui, ayant saisi l'occasion, a produit en moi, par le commandement, toutes sortes de convoitises; car, sans la loi, le péché est mort.
9 Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died.
Autrefois, j'étais sans loi, et je vivais, mais quand le commandement est venu, le péché a repris vie, et moi, je suis mort, —
10 So I discovered that the very commandment that was meant to bring life actually brought death.
de sorte qu'il s'est trouvé que le commandement, qui devait me donner la vie, m'a conduit à la mort.
11 For sin, seizing its opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through the commandment put me to death.
Car le péché, ayant saisi l'occasion, m'a séduit par le commandement même, et par lui m'a fait mourir.
12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous, and good.
Ainsi, la loi est sainte, et le commandement est saint, juste et bon.
13 Did that which is good, then, become death to me? Certainly not! But in order that sin might be exposed as sin, it produced death in me through what was good, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.
Ce qui est bon est-il donc devenu pour moi une cause de mort? Non certes! Mais c'est le péché qui m'a fait mourir, afin qu'il se manifestât comme péché, en me donnant la mort par ce qui est bon; en sorte que, par le moyen du commandement, le péché a atteint son dernier degré de gravité.
14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.
Nous savons, en effet, que la loi est spirituelle; mais moi, je suis charnel, vendu et asservi au péché.
15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do. But what I hate, I do.
Car je ne comprends pas ce que je fais: je ne fais pas ce que je veux, mais je fais ce que je hais.
16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I admit that the law is good.
Or, si je fais ce que je ne veux pas, je reconnais par là que la loi est bonne.
17 In that case, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
Et alors, ce n'est plus moi qui agis ainsi, mais c'est le péché qui habite en moi.
18 I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh; for I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.
En effet, je sais que ce qui est bon n'habite point en moi, c'est-à-dire dans ma chair, parce que j'ai la volonté de faire le bien, mais je n'ai pas le pouvoir de l'accomplir;
19 For I do not do the good I want to do. Instead, I keep on doing the evil I do not want to do.
car je ne fais pas le bien que je veux, mais je fais le mal que je ne veux pas.
20 And if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
Si je fais ce que je ne veux pas, ce n'est plus moi qui agis ainsi, mais c'est le péché qui habite en moi.
21 So this is the principle I have discovered: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me.
Je trouve donc en moi cette loi: Quand je veux faire le bien, le mal est attaché à moi.
22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law.
Car, dans mon être intime, je prends plaisir à la loi de Dieu;
23 But I see another law at work in my body, warring against the law of my mind and holding me captive to the law of sin that dwells within me.
mais je vois dans mes membres une autre loi qui combat contre la loi de mon entendement, et qui me rend captif de la loi du péché, qui se trouve dans mes membres.
24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?
Misérable que je suis! Qui me délivrera de ce corps de mort?
25 Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with my mind I serve the law of God, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
Grâces soient rendues à Dieu par Jésus-Christ, notre Seigneur! Ainsi donc, je suis moi-même assujetti, par l'entendement, à la loi de Dieu, mais, par la chair, à la loi du péché.
