Psalms 49
1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. Hear this, all you peoples; listen, all inhabitants of the world,
聖歌隊の指揮者によってうたわせたコラの子の歌 もろもろの民よ、これを聞け、すべて世に住む者よ、耳を傾けよ。
2 both low and high, rich and poor alike.
低きも高きも、富めるも貧しきも、共に耳を傾けよ。
3 My mouth will impart wisdom, and the meditation of my heart will bring understanding.
わが口は知恵を語り、わが心は知識を思う。
4 I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will express my riddle with the harp:
わたしは耳をたとえに傾け、琴を鳴らして、わたしのなぞを解き明かそう。
5 Why should I fear in times of trouble, when wicked usurpers surround me?
わたしをしえたげる者の不義がわたしを取り囲む悩みの日に、どうして恐れなければならないのか。
6 They trust in their wealth and boast in their great riches.
彼らはおのが富をたのみ、そのたからの多いのを誇る人々である。
7 No man can possibly redeem his brother or pay his ransom to God.
まことに人はだれも自分をあがなうことはできない。そのいのちの価を神に払うことはできない。
8 For the redemption of his soul is costly, and never can payment suffice,
9 that he should live on forever and not see decay.
とこしえに生きながらえて、墓を見ないためにそのいのちをあがなうには、あまりに価高くて、それを満足に払うことができないからである。
10 For it is clear that wise men die, and the foolish and the senseless both perish and leave their wealth to others.
まことに賢い人も死に、愚かな者も、獣のような者も、ひとしく滅んで、その富を他人に残すことは人の見るところである。
11 Their graves are their eternal homes— their dwellings for endless generations— even though their lands were their namesakes.
たとい彼らはその地を自分の名をもって呼んでも、墓こそ彼らのとこしえのすまい、世々彼らのすみかである。
12 But a man, despite his wealth, cannot endure; he is like the beasts that perish.
人は栄華のうちに長くとどまることはできない、滅びうせる獣にひとしい。
13 This is the fate of the self-confident and their followers who endorse their sayings.
これぞ自分をたのむ愚かな者どもの成りゆき、自分の分け前を喜ぶ者どもの果である。 (セラ)
14 Like sheep they are destined for Sheol. Death will be their shepherd. The upright will rule them in the morning, and their form will decay in Sheol, far from their lofty abode. (Sheol h7585)
彼らは陰府に定められた羊のように死が彼らを牧するであろう。彼らはまっすぐに墓に下り、そのかたちは消えうせ、陰府が彼らのすまいとなるであろう。 (Sheol h7585)
しかし神はわたしを受けられるゆえ、わたしの魂を陰府の力からあがなわれる。 (セラ) (Sheol h7585)
16 Do not be amazed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases.
人が富を得るときも、その家の栄えが増し加わるときも、恐れてはならない。
17 For when he dies, he will carry nothing away; his abundance will not follow him down.
彼が死ぬときは何ひとつ携え行くことができず、その栄えも彼に従って下って行くことはないからである。
18 Though in his lifetime he blesses his soul— and men praise you when you prosper—
たとい彼が生きながらえる間、自分を幸福と思っても、またみずから幸な時に、人々から称賛されても、
19 he will join the generation of his fathers, who will never see the light of day.
彼はついにおのれの先祖の仲間に連なる。彼らは絶えて光を見ることがない。
20 A man who has riches without understanding is like the beasts that perish.
人は栄華のうちに長くとどまることはできない。滅びうせる獣にひとしい。
