Proverbs 23
1 When you sit down to dine with a ruler, consider carefully what is set before you,
Cuando te sientas a comer con uno de los grandes, mira con atención lo que te ponen delante;
2 and put a knife to your throat if you possess a great appetite.
y aplica un cuchillo a tu garganta, si eres un hombre de gran apetito.
3 Do not crave his delicacies, for that food is deceptive.
No muestres avidez de sus delicadas viandas, pues son un manjar engañoso.
4 Do not wear yourself out to get rich; be wise enough to restrain yourself.
No te afanes por ganar riquezas; pon coto a tus deseos.
5 When you glance at wealth, it disappears, for it makes wings for itself and flies like an eagle to the sky.
No fijes tus ojos en las (riquezas) perecederas, pues ellas se toman alas, como de águila y vuelan hacia el cielo.
6 Do not eat the bread of a stingy man, and do not crave his delicacies;
No comas pan con el envidioso; no codicies sus delicados manjares;
7 for he is keeping track, inwardly counting the cost. “Eat and drink,” he says to you, but his heart is not with you.
porque así como los pensamientos de su alma es él. “Come y bebe”, te dice; mas su corazón no está contigo.
8 You will vomit up what little you have eaten and waste your pleasant words.
Vomitarás el bocado que comiste, y habrás desperdiciado tus amables palabras.
9 Do not speak to a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of your words.
No hables a los oídos del necio, pues despreciará tus sabios razonamientos.
10 Do not move an ancient boundary stone or encroach on the fields of the fatherless,
No trasplantes los hitos antiguos, ni pongas tu pie en los campos de los huérfanos.
11 for their Redeemer is strong; He will take up their case against you.
Porque su vengador es fuerte; Él tomará contra ti la causa de ellos.
12 Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge.
Aplica tu corazón a la instrucción, y tus oídos a los dichos de la sabiduría.
13 Do not withhold discipline from a child; although you strike him with a rod, he will not die.
No ahorres al joven la corrección; puesto que no morirá aunque le castigues con la vara.
Si lo castigas con la vara, librarás su alma del scheol. (Sheol h7585)
15 My son, if your heart is wise, my own heart will indeed rejoice.
Hijo mío, si tu corazón es sabio, se alegrará mi corazón;
16 My inmost being will rejoice when your lips speak what is right.
y se regocijarán mis entrañas cuando tus labios hablen de cosas rectas.
17 Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always continue in the fear of the LORD.
No envidie tu corazón a los pecadores, antes (persevera) en el temor de Yahvé en todo tiempo.
18 For surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.
Porque hay cosas venideras, y tu esperanza no quedará burlada.
19 Listen, my son, and be wise, and guide your heart on the right course.
Escúchame, hijo mío, y sé sabio, endereza tu corazón por la (recta) senda.
20 Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat.
No seas compañero de los bebedores de vino, ni de los que comen carne sin medida.
21 For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and drowsiness will clothe them in rags.
Porque los que beben y comen sin medida, se empobrecen; y la somnolencia los lleva a vestir andrajos.
22 Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.
Escucha a tu padre que te engendró; y no desprecies a tu madre cuando envejeciere.
23 Invest in truth and never sell it— in wisdom and instruction and understanding.
Adquiere la verdad, y no la vendas, tampoco la sabiduría, la doctrina e inteligencia.
24 The father of a righteous man will greatly rejoice, and he who fathers a wise son will delight in him.
Salta de placer el padre del justo, y el que engendra a un sabio tendrá en él su gozo.
25 May your father and mother be glad, and may she who gave you birth rejoice!
¡Alégrense, pues, tu padre y tu madre; regocíjese la que te dio a luz!
26 My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes delight in my ways.
Dame, hijo mío, tu corazón, y tus ojos tengan placer en mis caminos;
27 For a prostitute is a deep pit, and an adulteress is a narrow well.
porque fosa honda es la ramera, y pozo angosto la mujer ajena.
28 Like a robber she lies in wait and multiplies the faithless among men.
También ella, como un salteador, está al acecho, y aumenta el número de los prevaricadores entre los hombres.
29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaints? Who has needless wounds? Who has bloodshot eyes?
¿Para quién los ayes? ¿Para quién los lamentos? ¿Para quién las riñas? ¿Para quién las querellas? ¿Para quién las heridas sin motivo? ¿Para quién los ojos hinchados?
30 Those who linger over wine, who go to taste mixed drinks.
Son para los que no pueden separarse del vino, para los que andan en busca de vino aromático.
31 Do not gaze at wine while it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly.
No mires el vino cómo rojea; cómo en la copa se refleja su color; ni cómo fluye suavemente.
32 In the end it bites like a snake and stings like a viper.
Porque al fin muerde como una serpiente, y pica cual basilisco.
33 Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will utter perversities.
Tus ojos irán tras mujeres extrañas, y tu corazón hablará cosas perversas.
34 You will be like one sleeping on the high seas or lying on the top of a mast:
Serás como un hombre que se acuesta en medio del mar, y duerme sobre la punta de un mástil.
35 “They struck me, but I feel no pain! They beat me, but I did not know it! When can I wake up to search for another drink?”
(Dirás): “Me han apaleado, y no me duele, me han golpeado, y nada siento. Cuando me despierte volveré a tomar de nuevo.”
