Proverbs 18
1 He who isolates himself pursues selfish desires; he rebels against all sound judgment.
Nach dem, was ihn gelüstet, strebt, wer sich absondert; wider alles Vernünftige lehnt er sich auf.
2 A fool does not delight in understanding, but only in airing his opinions.
Ein Thor hat kein Gefallen an Einsicht, sondern daran, daß sein Denken offenbar werde.
3 With a wicked man comes contempt as well, and shame is accompanied by disgrace.
Wo der Gottlose hinkommt, da kommt auch Verachtung, und mit der Schande Schmach.
4 The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook.
Tiefe Wasser sind die Worte von eines Mannes Mund, ein sprudelnder Bach, eine Quelle der Weisheit.
5 Showing partiality to the wicked is not good, nor is depriving the innocent of justice.
Daß man für den Gottlosen Partei nimmt, ist ein übles Ding, - daß man den, der Recht hat, im Gericht hinwegstößt.
6 A fool’s lips bring him strife, and his mouth invites a beating.
Die Lippen des Thoren führen Streit herbei, und sein Mund ruft nach Schlägen.
7 A fool’s mouth is his ruin, and his lips are a snare to his soul.
Der Mund des Thoren führt seinen Sturz herbei, und seine Lippen sind ein Fallstrick für sein Leben.
8 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels that go down into the inmost being.
Die Worte des Ohrenbläsers sind wie Leckerbissen, und die dringen hinab in des Leibes Kammern.
9 Whoever is slothful in his work is brother to him who destroys.
Schon wer sich bei seinem Geschäfte lässig zeigt, ist ein Bruder dessen, der zu Grunde richtet.
10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.
Ein fester Turm ist der Name Jahwes; dahin läuft der Fromme und findet sich gesichert.
11 A rich man’s wealth is his fortified city; it is like a high wall in his imagination.
Des Reichen Habe ist ihm eine feste Stadt und bedünkt ihn eine hohe Mauer.
12 Before his downfall a man’s heart is proud, but humility comes before honor.
Dem Sturz eines Mannes geht Überhebung des Herzens voran, aber der Ehre geht Demut voran.
13 He who answers a matter before he hears it— this is folly and disgrace to him.
Giebt einer Antwort, ehe er noch hörte, so wird ihm das als Narrheit und als Schande gerechnet.
14 The spirit of a man can endure his sickness, but who can survive a broken spirit?
Des Mannes Mut hält sein Leiden aus, aber ein niedergeschlagenes Gemüt, wer kann das tragen?
15 The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks it out.
Des Verständigen Herz erwirbt sich Erkenntnis, und der Weisen Ohr strebt nach Erkenntnis.
16 A man’s gift opens doors for him, and brings him before great men.
Das Geschenk, das einer giebt, macht ihm Raum und geleitet ihn vor die Großen.
17 The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.
Recht hat der erste in seiner Streitsache; aber es kommt der andere und forscht ihn aus.
18 Casting the lot ends quarrels and separates strong opponents.
Streitigkeiten macht das Los ein Ende und bringt Starke auseinander.
19 An offended brother is harder to win than a fortified city, and disputes are like the bars of a castle.
Ein Bruder, gegen den treulos gehandelt ward, leistet mehr Widerstand als eine feste Stadt, und solcher Streit hält hart wie eines Palastes Riegel.
20 From the fruit of his mouth a man’s belly is filled; with the harvest from his lips he is satisfied.
Von der Frucht seines Mundes sättigt sich eines Mannes Leib; mit dem Ertrage seiner Lippen wird er gesättigt.
21 Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
Tod und Leben steht in der Zunge Gewalt, und wer sie im Zaume hält, wird ihre Frucht genießen.
22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD.
Wer eine Ehefrau gefunden, hat etwas Köstliches gefunden und Wohlgefallen von Jahwe erlangt.
23 The poor man pleads for mercy, but the rich man answers harshly.
Flehentlich redet der Arme, aber der Reiche antwortet mit Härte.
24 A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who stays closer than a brother.
Viel Umgang bringt leicht Untergang; doch giebt's auch Freunde, anhänglicher als ein Bruder.
