< Proverbs 13 >

1 A wise son heeds his father’s discipline, but a mocker does not listen to rebuke.
Ilmi ogeessi gorsa abbaa isaa dhagaʼa; qoostuun namaa immoo dheekkamsa hin dhaggeeffatu.
2 From the fruit of his lips a man enjoys good things, but the desire of the faithless is violence.
Namni waan afaan isaatii baʼuun waan gaariin gammada; namni hin amanamne garuu jeequmsaaf ariifata.
3 He who guards his mouth protects his life, but the one who opens his lips invites his own ruin.
Namni arraba isaa eeggatu, jireenya isaa eeggata; kan of eeggachuu malee dubbatu immoo baduuf ariifata.
4 The slacker craves yet has nothing, but the soul of the diligent is fully satisfied.
Fedhiin dhibaaʼaa yoom iyyuu hin guutamu; fedhiin nama jabaatee hojjetuu immoo guutumaan ni milkaaʼa.
5 The righteous hate falsehood, but the wicked bring shame and disgrace.
Namni qajeelaan soba jibba; namni hamaan garuu qaanii fi salphina fida.
6 Righteousness guards the man of integrity, but wickedness undermines the sinner.
Qajeelummaatu nama tolaa tiksa; hamminni garuu cubbamaa galaafata.
7 One pretends to be rich, but has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.
Namni tokko sooressa of fakkeessa; garuu homaa hin qabu; tokko immoo hiyyeessa of fakkeessa; garuu qabeenya guddaa qaba.
8 Riches may ransom a man’s life, but a poor man hears no threat.
Soorumni nama tokkoo furii jireenya isaa taʼuu dandaʼa; hiyyeessi garuu ifannaa hin dhagaʼu.
9 The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked is extinguished.
Ifni nama qajeelaa akka gaarii ifa; ibsaan nama hamaa garuu ni dhaama.
10 Arrogance leads only to strife, but wisdom is with the well-advised.
Of tuulummaan lola qofa baayʼisa; ogummaan garuu warra gorsa dhagaʼan biratti argamti.
11 Dishonest wealth will dwindle, but what is earned through hard work will be multiplied.
Maallaqni karaa sobaatiin dhufu dafee bada; namni xinnoo xinnoon maallaqa walitti qabatu garuu ni kuufata.
12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but desire fulfilled is a tree of life.
Abdiin lafa irra harkifatu garaa nama dhukkubsa; hawwiin guutamu garuu muka jireenyaa ti.
13 He who despises instruction will pay the penalty, but the one who respects a command will be rewarded.
Namni gorsa tuffatu badiisa ofitti fida; kan ajaja ulfeessu immoo badhaasa argata.
14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning one from the snares of death.
Barsiisni nama ogeessaa burqaa jireenyaa ti; kiyyoo duʼaa irraas nama deebisa.
15 Good understanding wins favor, but the way of the faithless is difficult.
Hubannaan gaariin surraa argamsiisa; karaan warra hin amanamnee garuu badiisatti isaan geessa.
16 Every prudent man acts with knowledge, but a fool displays his folly.
Namni qalbii qabu kam iyyuu beekumsaan hojjeta; gowwaan immoo gowwummaa isaa mulʼisa.
17 A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful envoy brings healing.
Ergamaan hamaan rakkoo keessa seena; ergamaan amanamaan garuu fayyina fida.
18 Poverty and shame come to him who ignores discipline, but whoever heeds correction is honored.
Namni adabamuu jibbu ni hiyyooma; ni qaanaʼas; kan sirreeffama kabaju immoo ulfina argata.
19 Desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but turning from evil is detestable to fools.
Hawwiin guutame namatti miʼaawa; gowwoonni garuu waan hamaa irraa deebiʼuu balfu.
20 He who walks with the wise will become wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed.
Namni nama ogeessa wajjin deemu ogeessa taʼa, michuun gowwootaa garuu ni miidhama.
21 Disaster pursues sinners, but prosperity is the reward of the righteous.
Wanni hamaan cubbamoota ariʼata; badhaadhummaan immoo badhaasa qajeelotaa ti.
22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the sinner’s wealth is passed to the righteous.
Namni gaariin ilmaan ilmaan isaatiif dhaala dabarsa; qabeenyi nama cubbamaa garuu qajeeltotaaf kuufama.
23 Abundant food is in the fallow ground of the poor, but without justice it is swept away.
Qonnaan hiyyeessaa midhaan guddaa baasa; murtiin jalʼaan garuu haxaaʼee duraa balleessa.
24 He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him diligently.
Namni harcummee qusatu ilma isaa jibba; kan ilma ofii jaallatu immoo ilaallachaa isa adaba.
25 A righteous man eats to his heart’s content, but the stomach of the wicked is empty.
Namni qajeelaan hamma quufutti nyaata; garaan nama hamaa garuu ni beelaʼa.
