1 A wise son heeds his father’s discipline, but a mocker does not listen to rebuke.

2 From the fruit of his lips a man enjoys good things, but the desire of the faithless is violence.

3 He who guards his mouth protects his life, but the one who opens his lips invites his own ruin.
Pahni angsum kami loe a hinghaih cuem kami ah oh; pakha kawkah aang kami loe amro tih.
4 The slacker craves yet has nothing, but the soul of the diligent is fully satisfied.
Thasae kami loe a koehhaih baktiah tidoeh tawn ai; thahoih kami loe a koehhaih to hak tih.
5 The righteous hate falsehood, but the wicked bring shame and disgrace.
Katoeng kami loe lok amlaihaih to hnukma; toe kasae kami loe panuet thoh moe, azathaih to ohsak.
6 Righteousness guards the man of integrity, but wickedness undermines the sinner.
Loklam amkhraeng ai kami loe toenghaih mah toep; toe kahoih ai kami mah loe kami kazae to amtimsak.
7 One pretends to be rich, but has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.
Angraeng ah angsah, tidoeh tawn ai kami to oh moe, kamtang ah angsah, angraeng parai kami doeh oh.
8 Riches may ransom a man’s life, but a poor man hears no threat.
Angraeng loe angraenghaih hoiah a hinghaih to akrang han oh; toe amtang kami loe thuitaekhaih lok to tahngai mak ai.
9 The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked is extinguished.
Katoeng kami aanghaih loe anghoehaih ah oh; toe kasae kami ih hmaiim loe dueh ving tih.
10 Arrogance leads only to strife, but wisdom is with the well-advised.
Amoekhaih mah angzoehhaih to tacawtsak; toe palungha kami loe acoe paekhaih lok to tahngaih.
11 Dishonest wealth will dwindle, but what is earned through hard work will be multiplied.
Azom ah hak ih phoisa loe anghma zuep tih; toe toksak moe, patung ih phoisa loe pung aep tih.
12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but desire fulfilled is a tree of life.
Oephaih anghmat ving naah poekhaih angpho; toe koehhaih acung naah loe, hinghaih thingkung ah oh.
13 He who despises instruction will pay the penalty, but the one who respects a command will be rewarded.
Thuitaekhaih lok patoek kami loe amro tih; toe paek ih lok khingya kami loe tangqum to hnu tih.
14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning one from the snares of death.
Palungha kami patukhaih lok loe, duekhaih thaang thung hoi loih hanah, hinghaih tuipuek ah oh.
15 Good understanding wins favor, but the way of the faithless is difficult.
Kahoih panoekhaih tawn kami loe minawk hmaa ah mikhmai pan tih; toe kasae kami ih loklam loe rai.
16 Every prudent man acts with knowledge, but a fool displays his folly.
Palungha kami loe palunghahaih hoiah toksak; toe kamthu loe amthuhaih to amtuengsak.
17 A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful envoy brings healing.
Kahoih ai laicaeh loe raihaih thungah amtim; toe oepthok laicaeh loe ngantuihaih ah oh.
18 Poverty and shame come to him who ignores discipline, but whoever heeds correction is honored.
Thuitaekhaih tahngai ai kami loe amtanghaih hoi azathaih mah pha thui tih; toe thuitaekhaih lok tahngai kami loe pakoehaih to hnu tih.
19 Desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but turning from evil is detestable to fools.
Koeh acunghaih loe hing thung kawkruk maw khosak hoih! Toe kahoih ai hmuen caeh taakhaih loe amthu kaminawk hanah panuet thok hmuen ah oh.
20 He who walks with the wise will become wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed.
Palungha hoi angkom kami loe palungha tih; toe kamthu hoi angkom kami loe amro tih.
21 Disaster pursues sinners, but prosperity is the reward of the righteous.
Kazae kaminawk loe sethaih mah hnukah patom; toe katoeng kaminawk loe tahamhoihaih tangqum to hnu o tih.
22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the sinner’s wealth is passed to the righteous.
Kahoih kami loe a caanawk ih caa patoeng hanah, qawk to caeh taak; toe kami zae loe katoeng kaminawk han ih ni hmuenmae to patung pae.
23 Abundant food is in the fallow ground of the poor, but without justice it is swept away.
Amtang kami ih lawk loe cang hoih parai; toe anih to aling o pongah amro boih.
24 He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him diligently.
Quiboeng patoh ai kami loe, a caa hnuma kami ah oh; toe caa palung kami loe, nawkta nathuem hoiah thuitaekhaih to tawnh.
25 A righteous man eats to his heart’s content, but the stomach of the wicked is empty.
