Numbers 23
1 Then Balaam said to Balak, “Build for me seven altars here, and prepare for me seven bulls and seven rams.”
Alors Balaam dit à Balac: Bâtis-moi ici sept autels et prépare autant de veaux, et des béliers en même nombre.
2 So Balak did as Balaam had instructed, and Balak and Balaam offered a bull and a ram on each altar.
Et, lorsqu’il eut fait selon la parole de Balaam, ils placèrent ensemble un veau et un bélier sur l’autel.
3 “Stay here by your burnt offering while I am gone,” Balaam said to Balak. “Perhaps the LORD will meet with me. And whatever He reveals to me, I will tell you.” So Balaam went off to a barren height,
Et Balaam dit à Balac: Tiens-toi un peu auprès de ton holocauste, jusqu’à ce que j’aille voir si par hasard le Seigneur se présentera à moi; et tout ce qu’il me commandera, je te le dirai.
4 and God met with him. “I have set up seven altars,” Balaam said, “and on each altar I have offered a bull and a ram.”
Et, s’en étant allé promptement, le Seigneur se présenta. Et Balaam lui ayant parlé: J’ai dressé, dit-il, sept autels, et j’ai placé un veau et un bélier par-dessus.
5 Then the LORD put a message in Balaam’s mouth, saying, “Return to Balak and give him this message.”
Mais le Seigneur lui mit une parole dans la bouche, et dit: Retourne vers Balac et tu lui diras ces choses.
6 So he returned to Balak, who was standing there beside his burnt offering, with all the princes of Moab.
Revenu, il trouva Balac se tenant auprès de son holocauste, ainsi que tous les princes des Moabites;
7 And Balaam lifted up an oracle, saying: “Balak brought me from Aram, the king of Moab from the mountains of the east. ‘Come,’ he said, ‘put a curse on Jacob for me; come and denounce Israel!’
Et employant sa parabole, il dit: C’est d’Aram que m’a fait venir Balac, roi des Moabites, c’est des montagnes d’orient: Viens, a-t-il dit, et maudis Jacob; hâte-toi et déteste Israël.
8 How can I curse what God has not cursed? How can I denounce what the LORD has not denounced?
Comment maudirais-je celui que Dieu n’a point maudit? Comment détesterais-je celui que le Seigneur ne déteste point?
9 For I see them from atop the rocky cliffs, and I watch them from the hills. Behold, a people dwelling apart, not reckoning themselves among the nations.
Des rochers les plus élevés je le verrai, et des collines je le considérerai. Ce peuple habitera seul, et il ne sera pas compté parmi les nations.
10 Who can count the dust of Jacob or number even a fourth of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous; let my end be like theirs!”
Qui pourra compter la poussière de Jacob et connaître le nombre de la lignée d’Israël? Meure mon âme de la mort des justes, et que ma fin soit semblable à la leur.
11 Then Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I brought you here to curse my enemies, and behold, you have only blessed them!”
Alors Balac dit à Balaam: Qu’est-ce que tu fais? C’est pour maudire mes ennemis que je t’ai appelé, et au contraire tu les bénis.
12 But Balaam replied, “Should I not speak exactly what the LORD puts in my mouth?”
Balaam lui répondit Est-ce que je puis dire autre chose que ce qu’a commandé le Seigneur?
13 Then Balak said to him, “Please come with me to another place where you can see them. You will only see the outskirts of their camp—not all of them. And from there, curse them for me.”
Balac reprit donc: Viens avec moi dans un autre lieu, d’où tu verras une partie d’Israël, et tu ne pourras le voir tout entier; de là maudis-le.
14 So Balak took him to the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, where he built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.
Et lorsqu’il l’eut conduit dans un lieu très élevé, sur le sommet de la montagne de Phasga, Balaam bâtit sept autels, et, un veau et un bélier placés par-dessus chacun deux,
15 Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your burnt offering while I meet the LORD over there.”
Il dit à Balac: Tiens-toi ici auprès de ton holocauste, jusqu’à ce que j’aille à la rencontre du Seigneur.
16 And the LORD met with Balaam and put a message in his mouth, saying, “Return to Balak and speak what I tell you.”
Or, lorsque le Seigneur se fut présenté à lui, et qu’il lui eut mis une parole dans la bouche, il dit: Retourne vers Balac, et tu lui diras ces choses.
17 So he returned to Balak, who was standing there by his burnt offering with the princes of Moab. “What did the LORD say?” Balak asked.
Revenu, il le trouva se tenant auprès de son holocauste, ainsi que les princes des Moabites avec lui. Balac lui demanda: Qu’a dit le Seigneur?
18 Then Balaam lifted up an oracle, saying: “Arise, O Balak, and listen; give ear to me, O son of Zippor.
Or, Balaam employant sa parabole, dit: Lève-toi, Balac, et prête l’oreille; écoute, fils de Séphor:
19 God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?
Dieu n’est pas comme un homme, pour qu’il mente, ou comme le fils d’un homme, pour qu’il change. Ainsi, il a dit, et il ne fera pas? il a parlé, et il n’accomplira pas?
20 I have indeed received a command to bless; He has blessed, and I cannot change it.
J’ai été amené pour bénir, et je ne puis détourner la bénédiction.
21 He considers no disaster for Jacob; He sees no trouble for Israel. The LORD their God is with them, and the shout of the King is among them.
Il n’y a point d’idole en Jacob, et on ne voit point de simulacre en Israël. Le Seigneur son Dieu est avec lui, et le chant de la victoire du roi en lui.
22 God brought them out of Egypt with strength like a wild ox.
Dieu l’a retiré de l’Egypte; sa force est semblable à celle d’un rhinocéros.
23 For there is no spell against Jacob and no divination against Israel. It will now be said of Jacob and Israel, ‘What great things God has done!’
Il n’y a point d’augure en Jacob, ni de divination en Israël. On dira en son temps à Jacob et à Israël ce que Dieu a fait.
24 Behold, the people rise like a lioness; they rouse themselves like a lion, not resting until they devour their prey and drink the blood of the slain.”
Voilà qu’un peuple se lèvera comme une lionne, et il se dressera comme un lion: il ne se reposera pas jusqu’à ce qu’il dévore une proie, et qu’il boive le sang de ceux qu’il aura tués.
25 Now Balak said to Balaam, “Then neither curse them at all nor bless them at all!”
Alors Balac dit à Balaam: Ne le maudis, ni ne le bénis.
26 But Balaam replied, “Did I not tell you that whatever the LORD says, I must do?”
Et celui-ci répondit: Ne t’ai-je pas dit que tout ce que Dieu commanderait, je le ferais?
27 “Please come,” said Balak, “I will take you to another place. Perhaps it will please God that you curse them for me from there.”
Alors Balac lui dit: Viens, et je te conduirai dans un autre lieu, pour voir si par hasard il plairait à Dieu que tu les maudisses de là.
28 And Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, which overlooks the wasteland.
Et, lorsqu’il l’eût conduit sur le sommet de la montagne de Phogor, qui regarde le désert,
29 Then Balaam said, “Build for me seven altars here, and prepare for me seven bulls and seven rams.”
Balaam lui dit: Bâtis-moi ici sept autels, et prépare autant de veaux, et des béliers en même nombre.
30 So Balak did as Balaam had instructed, and he offered a bull and a ram on each altar.
Balac fit comme Balaam avait dit: il plaça un veau et un bélier sur chaque autel.
