Nehemiah 5
1 About that time there was a great outcry from the people and their wives against their fellow Jews.
পরে লোকেরা ও তাদের স্ত্রীরা ইহুদি ভাইদের বিরুদ্ধে খুব হইচই করতে লাগল।
2 Some were saying, “We and our sons and daughters are numerous. We must get grain in order to eat and stay alive.”
কেউ কেউ বলল, “আমরা আমাদের ছেলেমেয়ে নিয়ে সংখ্যায় অনেক, খেয়ে বেঁচে থাকার জন্য আমাদের শস্যের প্রয়োজন।”
3 Others were saying, “We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards, and our homes to get grain during the famine.”
কেউ কেউ বলল, “দুর্ভিক্ষের সময় শস্য নেওয়ার জন্য আমরা আমাদের জমি, দ্রাক্ষাক্ষেত্র ও বাড়ি বন্ধক রাখছি।”
4 Still others were saying, “We have borrowed money to pay the king’s tax on our fields and vineyards.
আবার অন্যেরা বলল, “আমাদের জমি ও দ্রাক্ষাক্ষেত্রের উপর রাজার কর দেবার জন্য ধার করতে হয়েছে।
5 We and our children are just like our countrymen and their children, yet we are subjecting our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters are already enslaved, but we are powerless to redeem them because our fields and vineyards belong to others.”
যদিও আমরা একই জাতির লোক এবং আমাদের ছেলেমেয়েরা তাদের ছেলেমেয়েদের মতোই তবুও আমাদের ছেলেদের এবং আমাদের মেয়েদের দাসত্বের জন্য দিয়েছি। আমাদের কিছু মেয়ে আগেই দাসী হয়ে গেছে, কিন্তু আমরা ক্ষমতাহীন, কারণ আমাদের জমি ও দ্রাক্ষাক্ষেত্র এখন অন্যদের হয়ে গেছে।”
6 When I heard their outcry and these complaints, I became extremely angry,
আমি যখন তাদের হইচই ও নালিশ শুনলাম তখন ভীষণ রেগে গেলাম।
7 and after serious thought I rebuked the nobles and officials, saying, “You are exacting usury from your own brothers!” So I called a large assembly against them
আমি তাদের কথাগুলি মনে মনে বিবেচনা করলাম এবং গণ্যমান্য লোকদের ও উচ্চপদস্থ কর্মচারীদের ভীষণ বকাবকি করলাম। আমি তাদের বললাম, “তোমরা তোমাদের নিজের দেশের লোকদের কাছ থেকে সুদ আদায় করছ!” সেইজন্য আমি তাদের বিচার করার জন্য এক মহাসভা ডাকলাম
8 and said, “We have done our best to buy back our Jewish brothers who were sold to foreigners, but now you are selling your own brothers, that they may be sold back to us!” But they remained silent, for they could find nothing to say.
এবং বললাম “ওই অইহুদিদের কাছে আমাদের যেসব লোকেরা বিক্রি হয়েছিল যতদূর সম্ভব তাদের আমরা ছাড়িয়ে এনেছি। এখন তোমরা তোমাদের লোকদের বিক্রি করছ, যেন আমাদের কাছে তারা আবার বিক্রি হয়!” তারা চুপ করে থাকল, কারণ তারা উত্তর দেবার জন্য কিছুই খুঁজে পেল না।
9 So I continued, “What you are doing is not right. Shouldn’t you walk in the fear of our God to avoid the reproach of our foreign enemies?
আমি আরও বললাম, “তোমরা যা করছ তা ঠিক না। অইহুদি যাতে আমাদের বিদ্রুপ না করতে পারে সেইজন্য আমাদের ঈশ্বরের প্রতি ভয় রেখে চলা কি উচিত নয়?
10 I, as well as my brothers and my servants, have been lending the people money and grain. Please, let us stop this usury.
আমি, আমার ভাইয়েরা ও আমার লোকেরা তাদের অর্থ এবং শস্য ধার দিই। এসো আমরা এই সুদ নেওয়া বন্ধ করি!
11 Please restore to them immediately their fields, vineyards, olive groves, and houses, along with the percentage of the money, grain, new wine, and oil that you have been assessing them.”
তোমরা এখনই তাদের শস্যক্ষেত্র, দ্রাক্ষাক্ষেত্র, জলপাইক্ষেত্র এবং গৃহ সকল ফিরিয়ে দাও। আর অর্থের, শস্যের, নতুন দ্রাক্ষারসের এবং তেলের শতকার যে বৃদ্ধি নিয়ে ঋণ দিয়েছ তা তাদের ফিরিয়ে দাও।”
12 “We will restore it,” they replied, “and will require nothing more from them. We will do as you say.” So I summoned the priests and required of the nobles and officials an oath that they would do what they had promised.
তারা বলল, “আমরা তা ফিরিয়ে দেব এবং আমরা তাদের কাছে আর কিছুই দাবি করব না। আপনি যা বললেন আমরা তাই করব।” তারপর আমি যাজকদের ডেকে গণ্যমান্য লোকদের ও উচ্চপদস্থ কর্মচারীদের শপথ করালাম যে তারা প্রতিজ্ঞানুসারে কাজ করবে।
13 I also shook out the folds of my robe and said, “May God likewise shake out of His house and possession every man who does not keep this promise. May such a man be shaken out and have nothing!” The whole assembly said, “Amen,” and they praised the LORD. And the people did as they had promised.
আমার পোশাকের সামনের দিকটা ঝাড়া দিয়ে বললাম, “যারা এই প্রতিজ্ঞা রক্ষা করবে না, ঈশ্বর তাদের প্রত্যেককে তাদের বাড়ি ও সম্পত্তি থেকে এইভাবে ঝেড়ে ফেলবেন। এরকম লোকদের এইভাবেই ঝেড়ে ফেলা হবে এবং তাদের সবকিছু শেষ করা হবে।” এই কথা শুনে সমস্ত সমাজ বলল, “আমেন,” এবং সদাপ্রভুর গৌরব করল। আর লোকেরা তাদের প্রতিজ্ঞানুসারে কাজ করল।
14 Furthermore, from the day King Artaxerxes appointed me to be their governor in the land of Judah, from his twentieth year until his thirty-second year (twelve years total), neither I nor my brothers ate the food allotted to the governor.
এছাড়াও, রাজা অর্তক্ষস্তের বিংশতিতম বছরের সময় যখন আমি যিহূদা দেশে শাসনকর্তা পদে নিযুক্ত হয়েছিলাম, তখন থেকে তার রাজত্বের বত্রিশ বছর পর্যন্ত—বারো বছর—আমি ও আমার ভাইয়েরা দেশাধ্যক্ষর পাওনা খাবার গ্রহণ করিনি।
15 The governors before me had heavily burdened the people, taking from them bread and wine plus forty shekels of silver. Their servants also oppressed the people, but I did not do this because of my fear of God.
কিন্তু আমার আগে যে শাসনকর্তারা ছিলেন, তারা লোকদের উপর ভারী বোঝা চাপিয়ে দিয়েছিলেন এবং খাবারদাবার ও দ্রাক্ষারস ছাড়াও তাদের কাছ থেকে চল্লিশ শেকল রুপো নিতেন। তাদের চাকরেরাও লোকদের উপর কর্তৃত্ব করত। কিন্তু ঈশ্বরের প্রতি আমার ভক্তিমূলক ভয় থাকাতে আমি সেইরকম কাজ করিনি।
16 Instead, I devoted myself to the construction of the wall, and all my servants were gathered there for the work; we did not acquire any land.
বরং, আমি এই প্রাচীরের কাজে নিজেকে ব্যস্ত রাখতাম। আমার সকল চাকরেরা কাজ করার জন্য সেখানে জড়ো হত, আমরা কেউ কোনো জমি কিনিনি।
17 There were 150 Jews and officials at my table, besides the guests from the surrounding nations.
এছাড়াও, 150 জন ইহুদি ও উচ্চপদস্থ কর্মচারী এবং আমাদের চারিদিকের জাতিগণের মধ্যে যারা আমাদের কাছে আসত তারা আমার সঙ্গে খাওয়াদাওয়া করত।
18 Each day one ox, six choice sheep, and some fowl were prepared for me, and once every ten days an abundance of all kinds of wine was provided. But I did not demand the food allotted to the governor, because the burden on the people was so heavy.
প্রতিদিন একটি করে বলদ ও ছয়টি বাছাই করা মেষ ও কতগুলি পাখিও আমার জন্য রান্না করা হত, আর প্রতি দশদিন অন্তর যথেষ্ট পরিমাণ সব রকম দ্রাক্ষারস দেওয়া হত। এই সমস্ত সত্ত্বেও লোকদের উপর ভারী বোঝা থাকার দরুন আমি প্রদেশপালের কিছু দাবি করিনি।
19 Remember me favorably, O my God, for all that I have done for this people.
হে আমার ঈশ্বর, আমি এই লোকদের জন্য যে সকল কাজ করেছি, তুমি আমার মঙ্গলের জন্য তা স্মরণ করো।
