Nehemiah 4
1 Now when Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he was furious and filled with indignation. He ridiculed the Jews
Pero cuando Sanbalat se enteró de que estábamos construyendo el muro, se enojó y se indignó mucho, y se burló de los judíos.
2 before his associates and the army of Samaria, saying, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Can they restore the wall by themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they complete it in a day? Can they bring these burnt stones back to life from the mounds of rubble?”
Habló ante sus hermanos y el ejército de Samaria y dijo: “¿Qué hacen estos débiles judíos? ¿Se van a fortificar? ¿Sacrificarán? ¿Acabarán en un día? ¿Revivirán las piedras de los montones de basura, ya que están quemadas?”
3 Then Tobiah the Ammonite, who was beside him, said, “If even a fox were to climb up on what they are building, it would break down their wall of stones!”
Junto a él estaba Tobías, el amonita, quien dijo: “Lo que están construyendo, si una zorra trepara por él, derribaría su muro de piedra.”
4 Hear us, O God, for we are despised. Turn their scorn back upon their own heads, and let them be taken as plunder to a land of captivity.
“Escucha, Dios nuestro, porque somos despreciados. Vuelve su reproche sobre su propia cabeza. Entrégalos como botín en tierra de cautiverio.
5 Do not cover up their iniquity or let their sin be blotted out from Your sight, for they have provoked the builders.
No cubras su iniquidad. No permitas que su pecado sea borrado ante ti; porque han insultado a los constructores.”
6 So we rebuilt the wall until all of it was joined together up to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.
Construimos, pues, el muro, y toda la muralla se unió hasta la mitad de su altura, porque el pueblo tenía ganas de trabajar.
7 When Sanballat and Tobiah, together with the Arabs, Ammonites, and Ashdodites, heard that the repair to the walls of Jerusalem was progressing and that the gaps were being closed, they were furious,
Pero cuando Sanbalat, Tobías, los árabes, los amonitas y los asdoditas se enteraron de que se había avanzado en la reparación de los muros de Jerusalén y de que se empezaban a rellenar las brechas, se enfurecieron mucho;
8 and all of them conspired to come and fight against Jerusalem and create a hindrance.
y todos ellos se conjuraron para venir a pelear contra Jerusalén y causar confusión entre nosotros.
9 So we prayed to our God and posted a guard against them day and night.
Pero nosotros hicimos nuestra oración a nuestro Dios, y pusimos guardia contra ellos día y noche a causa de ellos.
10 Meanwhile, the people of Judah said: “The strength of the laborer fails, and there is so much rubble that we will never be able to rebuild the wall.”
Judá dijo: “La fuerza de los portadores de cargas se desvanece y hay muchos escombros, de modo que no podemos construir el muro”.
11 And our enemies said, “Before they know or see a thing, we will come into their midst, kill them, and put an end to the work.”
Nuestros adversarios dijeron: “No lo sabrán ni lo verán, hasta que entremos en medio de ellos y los matemos, y hagamos cesar la obra.”
12 At that time the Jews who lived nearby came and told us ten times over, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”
Cuando llegaron los judíos que vivían junto a ellos, nos dijeron diez veces desde todos los lugares: “Dondequiera que os volváis, nos atacarán”.
13 So I stationed men behind the lowest sections of the wall, at the vulnerable areas. I stationed them by families with their swords, spears, and bows.
Por eso puse guardias en las partes más bajas del espacio detrás de la muralla, en los lugares abiertos. Puse al pueblo por grupos familiares con sus espadas, sus lanzas y sus arcos.
14 After I had made an inspection, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”
Miré, me levanté y dije a los nobles, a los gobernantes y al resto del pueblo: “¡No tengan miedo de ellos! Acuérdense del Señor, que es grande y temible, y luchen por sus hermanos, sus hijos, sus hijas, sus esposas y sus casas”.
15 When our enemies heard that we were aware of their scheme and that God had frustrated it, each of us returned to his own work on the wall.
Cuando nuestros enemigos se enteraron de que habíamos sido informados, y de que Dios había hecho fracasar su consejo, todos nosotros volvimos al muro, cada uno a su trabajo.
16 And from that day on, half of my servants did the work while the other half held spears, shields, bows, and armor. The officers stationed themselves behind all the people of Judah
Desde entonces, la mitad de mis siervos hacía el trabajo, y la otra mitad tenía las lanzas, los escudos, los arcos y las cotas de malla; y los jefes estaban detrás de toda la casa de Judá.
17 who were rebuilding the wall. The laborers who carried materials worked with one hand and held a weapon with the other.
Los que construían el muro y los que llevaban cargas se cargaban; cada uno con una de sus manos hacía el trabajo y con la otra sostenía su arma.
18 And each of the builders worked with his sword strapped at his side. But the trumpeter stayed beside me.
Entre los constructores, todos llevaban su espada al costado, y así construían. El que tocaba la trompeta estaba junto a mí.
19 Then I said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people: “The work is great and extensive, and we are spread out far from one another along the wall.
Dije a los nobles, a los jefes y al resto del pueblo: “La obra es grande y está muy extendida, y nosotros estamos separados en el muro, lejos unos de otros.
20 Wherever you hear the sound of the horn, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us!”
Dondequiera que oigáis el sonido de la trompeta, reuníos allí con nosotros. Nuestro Dios luchará por nosotros”.
21 So we continued the work, while half of the men held spears from the break of dawn until the stars came out.
Así hicimos el trabajo. La mitad del pueblo sostuvo las lanzas desde el amanecer hasta que aparecieron las estrellas.
22 At that time I also said to the people, “Let every man and his servant spend the night inside Jerusalem, so that they can stand guard by night and work by day.”
Asimismo, al mismo tiempo dije al pueblo: “Que cada uno con su siervo se aloje dentro de Jerusalén, para que durante la noche nos sirvan de guardia y para que trabajen durante el día.”
23 So neither I nor my brothers nor my servants nor the guards with me changed out of our clothes; each carried his weapon, even to go for water.
Así que ni yo, ni mis hermanos, ni mis siervos, ni los hombres de la guardia que me seguían nos quitamos la ropa. Cada uno llevó su arma al agua.
