Nehemiah 2
1 Now in the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was set before him, I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had never been sad in his presence,
El año 20 del rey Artajerjes, el mes de Nisán, aconteció que cuando estaba el vino delante de él, yo tomé el vino y se lo serví al rey. Y como yo nunca antes estuve triste en su presencia,
2 so the king said to me, “Why is your face sad, though you are not ill? This could only be sadness of the heart.” I was overwhelmed with fear
el rey me dijo: Puesto que no estás enfermo, ¿por qué está triste tu semblante? ¿No es esto aflicción de corazón? Entonces temí muchísimo
3 and replied to the king, “May the king live forever! Why should I not be sad when the city where my fathers are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?”
y respondí al rey: ¡Viva el rey para siempre! ¿Cómo no debe estar triste mi semblante cuando la ciudad donde están los sepulcros de mis antepasados está en ruinas y sus puertas consumidas por el fuego?
4 “What is your request?” replied the king. So I prayed to the God of heaven
Y el rey me preguntó: ¿Qué pides? Entonces oré al ʼElohim del cielo
5 and answered the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, I ask that you send me to Judah, to the city where my fathers are buried, so that I may rebuild it.”
y contesté al rey: Si al rey le place y si tu esclavo halló gracia delante de ti, te ruego que me envíes a Judá, a la ciudad de los sepulcros de mis antepasados, para que la reedifique.
6 Then the king, with the queen seated beside him, asked me, “How long will your journey take, and when will you return?” So it pleased the king to send me, and I set a time.
Y el rey me preguntó (y la reina estaba sentada junto a él): ¿Cuánto durará tu viaje y cuándo volverás? Como al rey le pareció bien enviarme, yo le definí el plazo.
7 I also said to him, “If it pleases the king, may letters be given to me for the governors west of the Euphrates, so that they will grant me safe passage until I reach Judah.
Además dije al rey: Si al rey le parece bien, que se me den cartas para los gobernadores de Más Allá del Río Éufrates para que me dejen pasar hasta que llegue a Judá,
8 And may I have a letter to Asaph, keeper of the king’s forest, so that he will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel to the temple, for the city wall, and for the house I will occupy.” And because the gracious hand of my God was upon me, the king granted my requests.
y también una carta para Asaf, guarda del bosque del rey, con el propósito de que me dé madera para enmaderar las puertas de la ciudadela que está junto al Templo, el muro de la ciudad y la casa en la cual yo estaré. El rey me lo concedió, de acuerdo con la benéfica mano de mi ʼElohim.
9 Then I went to the governors west of the Euphrates and gave them the king’s letters. The king had also sent army officers and cavalry with me.
El rey envió capitanes del ejército y jinetes conmigo. Cuando llegué a los gobernadores de Mas Allá del Río, les entregué las cartas reales.
10 But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official heard about this, they were deeply disturbed that someone had come to seek the well-being of the Israelites.
Pero cuando Sanbalat horonita y Tobías, el esclavo amonita, lo oyeron, se disgustaron muchísimo de que alguien llegara a procurar el bien de los hijos de Israel.
11 After I had arrived in Jerusalem and had been there three days,
Llegué a Jerusalén y estuve allí tres días.
12 I set out at night with a few men. I did not tell anyone what my God had laid on my heart to do for Jerusalem. The only animal with me was the one on which I was riding.
Me levanté de noche y tomé a unos pocos hombres. A nadie declaré lo que mi ʼElohim puso en mi corazón para hacer por Jerusalén. No había alguna bestia conmigo, excepto el animal en el cual cabalgaba.
13 So I went out at night through the Valley Gate toward the Well of the Serpent and the Dung Gate, and I inspected the walls of Jerusalem that had been broken down and the gates that had been destroyed by fire.
Salí de noche por la puerta del Valle. Pasé por la fuente del Dragón y por la puerta del Muladar. Inspeccioné los muros de Jerusalén que estaban destruidos y sus puertas consumidas por el fuego.
14 Then I went on to the Fountain Gate and the King’s Pool, but there was no room for the animal under me to get through;
Luego pasé a la puerta de la Fuente y fui hasta el estanque del Rey, pero no había espacio para que pasara la bestia en la cual iba.
15 so I went up the valley by night and inspected the wall. Then I headed back and reentered through the Valley Gate.
Subí de noche por el torrente e inspeccioné el muro. Cuando regresé, entré otra vez por la puerta del Valle.
16 The officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, for I had not yet told the Jews or priests or nobles or officials or any other workers.
Los oficiales no sabían a dónde fui, ni qué hice, pues hasta entonces no había informado a los judíos, los sacerdotes, los jefes, los oficiales ni a los demás que hacían el trabajo.
17 Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in. Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned down. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, so that we will no longer be a disgrace.”
Entonces les dije: Ustedes ven el mal en el cual estamos, cómo Jerusalén está destruida y sus puertas devastadas por el fuego. ¡Vengan y reedifiquemos el muro de Jerusalén, para que ya no estemos en oprobio!
18 I also told them about the gracious hand of my God upon me, and what the king had said to me. “Let us start rebuilding,” they replied, and they set their hands to this good work.
Les declaré cómo la mano de mi ʼElohim fue buena sobre mí, y también las palabras que me dijo el rey. Entonces respondieron: ¡Levantémonos y reedifiquemos! De este modo dispusieron sus manos para lo bueno.
19 But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite official, and Geshem the Arab heard about this, they mocked us and ridiculed us, saying, “What is this you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?”
Pero cuando Sanbalat horonita, Tobías, el esclavo amonita y Gesem, el árabe, lo oyeron y se burlaron de nosotros. Nos dijeron despectivamente: ¿Qué están haciendo ustedes? ¿Se rebelan contra el rey?
20 So I answered them and said, “The God of heaven is the One who will grant us success. We, His servants, will start rebuilding, but you have no portion, right, or claim in Jerusalem.”
Y les respondí: El ʼElohim del cielo nos prosperará. Por tanto, nosotros, sus esclavos, nos levantamos y edificamos, pero ustedes no tienen parte, ni derecho, ni memoria en Jerusalén.
