< Matthew 4 >

1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
Then Jesus was led up into the desert by the Spirit, to be tempted by the devil.
2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry.
And after he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he became hungry,
3 The tempter came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
So the tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, bid these stones to become bread."
4 But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Jesus answered him, "It is written, Not by bread alone shall man live, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God."
5 Then the devil took Him to the holy city and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple.
Then the devil took him up into the Holy City and stood him on the parapet of the temple,
6 “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You, and they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”
and said to him. "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, "He will give his angels charge over thee; Upon their hands they will bear thee up, Lest thou dash thy foot against a stone."
7 Jesus replied, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
"It is written again," answered Jesus, "Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God."
8 Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
Then the devil took Jesus to a very high mountain, and showed all the kingdoms of the earth and the glory of them,
9 “All this I will give You,” he said, “if You will fall down and worship me.”
and said to him, "All these will I give you, if you will fall down and worship me."
10 “Away from Me, Satan!” Jesus declared. “For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’”
"Begone, Satan!" answered Jesus, "for it is written, "Thou must worship the Lord thy God, and Him only must thou serve."
11 Then the devil left Him, and angels came and ministered to Him.
Then the devil left him, and behold! angels came and began ministering to him.

20 And at once they left their nets and followed Him.
