< Matthew 27 >

1 When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people conspired against Jesus to put Him to death.
And when morning was come, all the chief priests and ancients of the people took counsel against Jesus, that they might put him to death.
2 They bound Him, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate the governor.
And they brought him bound, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
3 When Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was filled with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.
Then Judas, who betrayed him, seeing that he was condemned, repenting himself, brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and ancients,
4 “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,” he said. “What is that to us?” they replied. “You bear the responsibility.”
Saying: I have sinned in betraying innocent blood. But they said: What is that to us? look thou to it.
5 So Judas threw the silver into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.
And casting down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed: and went and hanged himself with an halter.
6 The chief priests picked up the pieces of silver and said, “It is unlawful to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.”
But the chief priests having taken the pieces of silver, said: It is not lawful to put them into the corbona, because it is the price of blood.
7 After conferring together, they used the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners.
And after they had consulted together, they bought with them the potter’s field, to be a burying place for strangers.
8 That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day.
For this cause the field was called Haceldama, that is, The field of blood, even to this day.
9 Then what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on Him by the people of Israel,
Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremias the prophet, saying: And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was prized, whom they prized of the children of Israel.
10 and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord had commanded me.”
And they gave them unto the potter’s field, as the Lord appointed to me.
11 Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, who questioned Him: “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.
And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, saying: Art thou the king of the Jews? Jesus saith to him: Thou sayest it.
12 And when He was accused by the chief priests and elders, He gave no answer.
And when he was accused by the chief priests and ancients, he answered nothing.
13 Then Pilate asked Him, “Do You not hear how many charges they are bringing against You?”
Then Pilate saith to him: Dost not thou hear how great testimonies they allege against thee?
14 But Jesus gave no answer, not even to a single charge, much to the governor’s amazement.
And he answered him to never a word; so that the governor wondered exceedingly.
15 Now it was the governor’s custom at the feast to release to the crowd a prisoner of their choosing.
Now upon the solemn day the governor was accustomed to release to the people one prisoner, whom they would.
16 At that time they were holding a notorious prisoner named Barabbas.
And he had then a notorious prisoner, that was called Barabbas.
17 So when the crowd had assembled, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”
They therefore being gathered together, Pilate said: Whom will you that I release to you, Barabbas, or Jesus that is called Christ?
18 For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him.
For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.
19 While Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him this message: “Have nothing to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered terribly in a dream today because of Him.”
And as he was sitting in the place of judgment, his wife sent to him, saying: Have thou nothing to do with that just man; for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.
20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus put to death.
But the chief priests and ancients persuaded the people, that they should ask Barabbas, and make Jesus away.
21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor. “Barabbas,” they replied.
And the governor answering, said to them: Whether will you of the two to be released unto you? But they said, Barabbas.
22 “What then should I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify Him!”
Pilate saith to them: What shall I do then with Jesus that is called Christ? They say all: Let him be crucified.
23 “Why?” asked Pilate. “What evil has He done?” But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify Him!”
The governor said to them: Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying: Let him be crucified.
24 When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but that instead a riot was breaking out, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “You bear the responsibility.”
And Pilate seeing that he prevailed nothing, but that rather a tumult was made; taking water washed his hands before the people, saying: I am innocent of the blood of this just man; look you to it.
25 All the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!”
And the whole people answering, said: His blood be upon us and our children.
26 So Pilate released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed Him over to be crucified.
Then he released to them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him unto them to be crucified.
27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company around Him.
Then the soldiers of the governor taking Jesus into the hall, gathered together unto him the whole band;
28 They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.
And stripping him, they put a scarlet cloak about him.
29 And they twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on His head. They put a staff in His right hand and knelt down before Him to mock Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
And platting a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand. And bowing the knee before him, they mocked him, saying: Hail, king of the Jews.
30 Then they spit on Him and took the staff and struck Him on the head repeatedly.
And spitting upon him, they took the reed, and struck his head.
31 After they had mocked Him, they removed the robe and put His own clothes back on Him. Then they led Him away to crucify Him.
And after they had mocked him, they took off the cloak from him, and put on him his own garments, and led him away to crucify him.
32 Along the way they found a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross of Jesus.
And going out, they found a man of Cyrene, named Simon: him they forced to take up his cross.
33 And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means The Place of the Skull,
And they came to the place that is called Golgotha, which is the place of Calvary.
34 they offered Him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, He refused to drink it.
And they gave him wine to drink mingled with gall. And when he had tasted, he would not drink.
35 When they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments by casting lots.
And after they had crucified him, they divided his garments, casting lots; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: They divided my garments among them; and upon my vesture they cast lots.
36 And sitting down, they kept watch over Him there.
And they sat and watched him.
37 Above His head they posted the written charge against Him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
And they put over his head his cause written: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
38 Two robbers were crucified with Him, one on His right hand and the other on His left.
Then were crucified with him two thieves: one on the right hand, and one on the left.
39 And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads
And they that passed by, blasphemed him, wagging their heads,
40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!”
And saying: Vah, thou that destroyest the temple of God, and in three days dost rebuild it: save thy own self: if thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
41 In the same way, the chief priests, scribes, and elders mocked Him, saying,
In like manner also the chief priests, with the scribes and ancients, mocking, said:
42 “He saved others, but He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel! Let Him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in Him.
He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the king of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
43 He trusts in God. Let God deliver Him now if He wants Him. For He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”
He trusted in God; let him now deliver him if he will have him; for he said: I am the Son of God.
44 In the same way, even the robbers who were crucified with Him berated Him.
And the selfsame thing the thieves also, that were crucified with him, reproached him with.
45 From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land.
Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over the whole earth, until the ninth hour.
46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying: Eli, Eli, lamma sabacthani? that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He is calling Elijah.”
And some that stood there and heard, said: This man calleth Elias.
48 One of them quickly ran and brought a sponge. He filled it with sour wine, put it on a reed, and held it up for Jesus to drink.
And immediately one of them running took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar; and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.
49 But the others said, “Leave Him alone. Let us see if Elijah comes to save Him.”
And the others said: Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to deliver him.
50 When Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, He yielded up His spirit.
And Jesus again crying with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
51 At that moment the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked and the rocks were split.
And behold the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top even to the bottom, and the earth quaked, and the rocks were rent.
52 The tombs broke open, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised.
And the graves were opened: and many bodies of the saints that had slept arose,
53 After Jesus’ resurrection, when they had come out of the tombs, they entered the holy city and appeared to many people.
And coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, came into the holy city, and appeared to many.
54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified and said, “Truly this was the Son of God.”
Now the centurion and they that were with him watching Jesus, having seen the earthquake, and the things that were done, were sore afraid, saying: Indeed this was the Son of God.
55 And many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to minister to Him.
And there were there many women afar off, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:
56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.
Among whom was Mary Magdalen, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who himself was a disciple of Jesus.
And when it was evening, there came a certain rich man of Arimathea, named Joseph, who also himself was a disciple of Jesus.
58 He went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him.
He went to Pilate, and asked the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded that the body should be delivered.
59 So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
And Joseph taking the body, wrapped it up in a clean linen cloth.
60 and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut into the rock. Then he rolled a great stone across the entrance to the tomb and went away.
And laid it in his own new monument, which he had hewed out in a rock. And he rolled a great stone to the door of the monument, and went his way.
61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.
And there was there Mary Magdalen, and the other Mary sitting over against the sepulchre.
62 The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and Pharisees assembled before Pilate.
And the next day, which followed the day of preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees came together to Pilate,
63 “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while He was alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’
Saying: Sir, we have remembered, that that seducer said, while he was yet alive: After three days I will rise again.
64 So give the order that the tomb be secured until the third day. Otherwise, His disciples may come and steal Him away and tell the people He has risen from the dead. And this last deception would be worse than the first.”
Command therefore the sepulchre to be guarded until the third day: lest perhaps his disciples come and steal him away, and say to the people: He is risen from the dead; and the last error shall be worse than the first.
65 “You have a guard,” Pilate said. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.”
Pilate saith to them: You have a guard; go, guard it as you know.
66 So they went and secured the tomb by sealing the stone and posting the guard.
And they departing, made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting guards.
