Matthew 14
1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus
Ἐν ἐκείνῳ τῷ καιρῷ ἤκουσεν Ἡρῴδης ὁ τετράρχης τὴν ἀκοὴν ˚Ἰησοῦ,
2 and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”
καὶ εἶπεν τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ, “Οὗτός ἐστιν Ἰωάννης ὁ Βαπτιστής· αὐτὸς ἠγέρθη ἀπὸ τῶν νεκρῶν, καὶ διὰ τοῦτο αἱ δυνάμεις ἐνεργοῦσιν ἐν αὐτῷ.”
3 Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,
Ὁ γὰρ Ἡρῴδης κρατήσας τὸν Ἰωάννην, ἔδησεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἐν φυλακῇ ἀπέθετο, διὰ Ἡρῳδιάδα, τὴν γυναῖκα Φιλίππου, τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ.
4 because John had been telling him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
Ἔλεγεν γὰρ αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰωάννης, “Οὐκ ἔξεστίν σοι ἔχειν αὐτήν.”
5 Although Herod wanted to kill John, he was afraid of the people, because they regarded John as a prophet.
Καὶ θέλων αὐτὸν ἀποκτεῖναι, ἐφοβήθη τὸν ὄχλον, ὅτι ὡς προφήτην αὐτὸν εἶχον.
6 On Herod’s birthday, however, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod
Γενεσίοις δὲ γενομένοις τοῦ Ἡρῴδου, ὠρχήσατο ἡ θυγάτηρ τῆς Ἡρῳδιάδος ἐν τῷ μέσῳ καὶ ἤρεσεν τῷ Ἡρῴδῃ,
7 so much that he promised with an oath to give to her whatever she asked.
ὅθεν μεθʼ ὅρκου, ὡμολόγησεν αὐτῇ δοῦναι ὃ ἐὰν αἰτήσηται.
8 Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”
Ἡ δὲ προβιβασθεῖσα ὑπὸ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτῆς, “Δός μοι”, φησίν, “ὧδε ἐπὶ πίνακι, τὴν κεφαλὴν Ἰωάννου τοῦ Βαπτιστοῦ.”
9 The king was grieved, but because of his oaths and his guests, he ordered that her wish be granted
Καὶ ἐλυπήθη ὁ βασιλεὺς διὰ δὲ τοὺς ὅρκους καὶ τοὺς συνανακειμένους, ἐκέλευσεν δοθῆναι.
10 and sent to have John beheaded in the prison.
Καὶ πέμψας, ἀπεκεφάλισεν Ἰωάννην ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ.
11 John’s head was brought in on a platter and presented to the girl, who carried it to her mother.
Καὶ ἠνέχθη ἡ κεφαλὴ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ πίνακι, καὶ ἐδόθη τῷ κορασίῳ, καὶ ἤνεγκεν τῇ μητρὶ αὐτῆς.
12 Then John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it. And they went and informed Jesus.
Καὶ προσελθόντες, οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἦραν τὸ πτῶμα καὶ ἔθαψαν αὐτόν, καὶ ἐλθόντες, ἀπήγγειλαν τῷ ˚Ἰησοῦ.
13 When Jesus heard about John, He withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. But the crowds found out about it and followed Him on foot from the towns.
Ἀκούσας δὲ, ὁ ˚Ἰησοῦς ἀνεχώρησεν ἐκεῖθεν ἐν πλοίῳ εἰς ἔρημον τόπον κατʼ ἰδίαν. Καὶ ἀκούσαντες, οἱ ὄχλοι ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ πεζῇ ἀπὸ τῶν πόλεων.
14 When He stepped ashore and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them and healed their sick.
Καὶ ἐξελθὼν, εἶδεν πολὺν ὄχλον, καὶ ἐσπλαγχνίσθη ἐπʼ αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν τοὺς ἀρρώστους αὐτῶν.
15 When evening came, the disciples came to Him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is already late. Dismiss the crowds so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης, προσῆλθον αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ λέγοντες, “Ἔρημός ἐστιν ὁ τόπος καὶ ἡ ὥρα ἤδη παρῆλθεν· ἀπόλυσον τοὺς ὄχλους, ἵνα ἀπελθόντες εἰς τὰς κώμας, ἀγοράσωσιν ἑαυτοῖς βρώματα.”
16 “They do not need to go away,” Jesus replied. “You give them something to eat.”
Ὁ δὲ ˚Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, “Οὐ χρείαν ἔχουσιν ἀπελθεῖν. Δότε αὐτοῖς ὑμεῖς φαγεῖν.”
17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.
Οἱ δὲ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ, “Οὐκ ἔχομεν ὧδε, εἰ μὴ πέντε ἄρτους καὶ δύο ἰχθύας.”
18 “Bring them here to Me,” Jesus said.
Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν, “Φέρετέ μοι ὧδε αὐτούς.”
19 And He directed the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, He spoke a blessing. Then He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
Καὶ κελεύσας τοὺς ὄχλους ἀνακλιθῆναι ἐπὶ τοῦ χόρτου, καὶ λαβὼν τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους καὶ τοὺς δύο ἰχθύας, ἀναβλέψας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν, εὐλόγησεν καὶ κλάσας, ἔδωκεν τοῖς μαθηταῖς τοὺς ἄρτους, οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ τοῖς ὄχλοις.
20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
Καὶ ἔφαγον πάντες καὶ ἐχορτάσθησαν, καὶ ἦραν τὸ περισσεῦον τῶν κλασμάτων, δώδεκα κοφίνους πλήρεις.
21 About five thousand men were fed, in addition to women and children.
Οἱ δὲ ἐσθίοντες ἦσαν ἄνδρες ὡσεὶ πεντακισχίλιοι, χωρὶς γυναικῶν καὶ παιδίων.
22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowds.
Καὶ εὐθέως ἠνάγκασεν τοὺς μαθητὰς ἐμβῆναι εἰς τὸ πλοῖον, καὶ προάγειν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ πέραν, ἕως οὗ ἀπολύσῃ τοὺς ὄχλους.
23 After He had sent them away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. When evening came, He was there alone,
Καὶ ἀπολύσας τοὺς ὄχλους, ἀνέβη εἰς τὸ ὄρος κατʼ ἰδίαν προσεύξασθαι. Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης, μόνος ἦν ἐκεῖ.
24 but the boat was already far from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
Τὸ δὲ πλοῖον ἤδη μέσον τῆς θαλάσσης ἦν, βασανιζόμενον ὑπὸ τῶν κυμάτων, ἦν γὰρ ἐναντίος ὁ ἄνεμος.
25 During the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went out to them, walking on the sea.
Τετάρτῃ δὲ φυλακῇ τῆς νυκτὸς, ἦλθεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς περιπατῶν ἐπὶ τὴν θάλασσαν.
26 When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost!” they said, and cried out in fear.
Οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ ἰδόντες, αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσσης περιπατοῦντα, ἐταράχθησαν λέγοντες, ὅτι “Φάντασμά ἐστιν”, καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ φόβου ἔκραξαν.
27 But Jesus spoke up at once: “Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.”
Εὐθὺς δὲ ἐλάλησεν ὁ ˚Ἰησοῦς αὐτοῖς λέγων, “Θαρσεῖτε, ἐγώ εἰμι, μὴ φοβεῖσθε.”
28 “Lord, if it is You,” Peter replied, “command me to come to You on the water.”
Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ αὐτῷ, ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν, “˚Κύριε, εἰ σὺ εἶ, κέλευσόν με ἐλθεῖν πρὸς σὲ ἐπὶ τὰ ὕδατα.”
29 “Come,” said Jesus. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus.
Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν, “Ἐλθέ.” Καὶ καταβὰς ἀπὸ τοῦ πλοίου, Πέτρος περιεπάτησεν ἐπὶ τὰ ὕδατα καὶ ἦλθεν πρὸς τὸν ˚Ἰησοῦν.
30 But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Βλέπων δὲ τὸν ἄνεμον ἰσχυρὸν, ἐφοβήθη καὶ ἀρξάμενος καταποντίζεσθαι, ἔκραξεν λέγων, “˚Κύριε, σῶσόν με.”
31 Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and took hold of Peter. “You of little faith,” He said, “why did you doubt?”
Εὐθέως δὲ ὁ ˚Ἰησοῦς ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα, ἐπελάβετο αὐτοῦ καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ, “Ὀλιγόπιστε, εἰς τί ἐδίστασας;”
32 And when they had climbed back into the boat, the wind died down.
Καὶ ἀναβάντων αὐτῶν εἰς τὸ πλοῖον, ἐκόπασεν ὁ ἄνεμος.
33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God!”
Οἱ δὲ ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ προσεκύνησαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες, “Ἀληθῶς ˚Θεοῦ Υἱὸς εἶ!”
34 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret.
Καὶ διαπεράσαντες, ἦλθον ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν εἰς Γεννησαρέτ.
35 And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding region. People brought all the sick to Him
Καὶ ἐπιγνόντες αὐτὸν, οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου ἀπέστειλαν εἰς ὅλην τὴν περίχωρον ἐκείνην, καὶ προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ πάντας τοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας,
36 and begged Him just to let them touch the fringe of His cloak. And all who touched Him were healed.
καὶ παρεκάλουν αὐτὸν ἵνα μόνον ἅψωνται τοῦ κρασπέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ· καὶ ὅσοι ἥψαντο διεσώθησαν.
