< Matthew 11 >

1 After Jesus had finished instructing His twelve disciples, He went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.
ⲁ̅ⲁⲥϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉⲓⲏⲥ ⲟⲩⲱ ⲉϥⲟⲩⲉϩⲥⲁϩⲛⲉ ⲙⲡⲉϥⲙⲛⲧⲥⲛⲟⲟⲩⲥ ⲙⲙⲁⲑⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲁϥⲡⲱⲱⲛⲉ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲙ ⲡⲙⲁ ⲉⲧⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲉϥϯ ⲥⲃⲱ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲉϥⲧⲁϣⲉⲟⲉⲓϣ ϩⲣⲁⲓ ϩⲛ ⲛⲉⲩⲡⲟⲗⲓⲥ
2 Meanwhile John heard in prison about the works of Christ, and he sent his disciples
ⲃ̅ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉϥⲥⲱⲧⲙ ⲇⲉ ⲛϭⲓ ⲓⲱϩⲁⲛⲛⲏⲥ ϩⲣⲁⲓ ϩⲙ ⲡⲉϣⲧⲉⲕⲟ ⲉⲛⲉϩⲃⲏⲩⲉ ⲙⲡⲉⲭⲥ ⲁϥϫⲟⲟⲩ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲓⲧⲟⲟⲧⲟⲩ ⲛⲛⲉϥⲙⲁⲑⲏⲧⲏⲥ
3 to ask Him, “Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?”
ⲅ̅ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛⲁⲩ ϫⲉ ⲛⲧⲟⲕ ⲡⲉⲧⲛⲏⲩ ϫⲉ ⲧⲁⲣⲉⲛϭⲱϣⲧ ϩⲏⲧϥ ⲛⲕⲉⲟⲩⲁ
4 Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see:
ⲇ̅ⲁϥⲟⲩⲱϣⲃ ⲇⲉ ⲛϭⲓ ⲓⲏⲥ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛⲁⲩ ϫⲉ ⲃⲱⲕ ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲛϫⲱ ⲉⲓⲱϩⲁⲛⲛⲏⲥ ⲛⲛⲉⲧⲉⲧⲛⲥⲱⲧⲙ ⲉⲣⲟⲟⲩ ⲙⲛ ⲛⲉⲧⲉⲧⲛⲛⲁⲩ ⲉⲣⲟⲟⲩ
5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.
ⲉ̅ϫⲉ ⲛⲃⲗⲗⲉ ⲛⲁⲩ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲛϭⲁⲗⲉ ⲙⲟⲟϣⲉ ⲛⲉⲧⲥⲟⲃϩ ⲧⲃⲃⲟ ⲛⲁⲗ ⲥⲱⲧⲙ ⲛⲉⲙⲡⲟ ϣⲁϫⲉ ⲛⲉⲧⲙⲟⲟⲩⲧ ⲧⲱⲟⲩⲛ ⲛϩⲏⲕⲉ ⲥⲉⲉⲩⲁⲅⲅⲉⲗⲓⲍⲉ ⲛⲁⲩ
6 Blessed is the one who does not fall away on account of Me.”
ⲋ̅ⲁⲩⲱ ⲛⲁⲓⲁⲧϥ ⲙⲡⲉⲧⲉ ⲛϥⲛⲁⲥⲕⲁⲛⲇⲁⲗⲓⲍⲉ ⲁⲛ ϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲛϩⲏⲧ
7 As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?
ⲍ̅ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉⲛⲁⲓ ⲇⲉ ⲃⲱⲕ ⲁϥⲁⲣⲭⲉⲓ ⲛϭⲓ ⲓⲏⲥ ⲉϫⲟⲟⲥ ⲛⲙⲙⲏⲏϣⲉ ⲉⲧⲃⲉ ⲓⲱϩⲁⲛⲛⲏⲥ ϫⲉ ⲛⲧⲁⲧⲉⲧⲛⲉⲓ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲉⲧⲉⲣⲏⲙⲟⲥ ⲉⲛⲁⲩ ⲉⲟⲩ ⲉⲩⲕⲁϣ ⲉⲣⲉⲡⲧⲏⲩ ⲕⲓⲙ ⲉⲣⲟϥ
8 Otherwise, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? Look, those who wear fine clothing are found in kings’ palaces.
ⲏ̅ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⲛⲧⲁⲧⲉⲧⲛⲉⲓ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲉⲛⲁⲩ ⲉⲟⲩ ⲉⲩⲣⲱⲙⲉ ⲉⲣⲉϩⲉⲛϩⲃⲥⲱ ⲉⲩϭⲏⲛ ⲧⲟ ϩⲓⲱⲱϥ ⲉⲓⲥ ϩⲏⲏⲧⲉ ⲛⲉⲧⲫⲟⲣⲉⲓ ⲛⲛϩⲃⲥⲱ ⲉⲩϭⲏⲛ ⲥⲉϩⲛⲛⲏⲓ ⲛⲛⲣⲣⲱⲟⲩ
9 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
ⲑ̅ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⲛⲧⲁⲧⲉⲧⲛⲉⲓ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲉⲛⲁⲩ ⲉⲟⲩ ⲉⲩⲡⲣⲟⲫⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲉϩⲉ ϯϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ⲛⲏⲧⲛ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩϩⲟⲩⲉⲡⲣⲟⲫⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲡⲉ
10 This is the one about whom it is written: ‘Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way before You.’
ⲓ̅ⲡⲁⲓ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲡⲉⲧⲥⲏϩ ⲉⲧⲃⲏⲏⲧϥ ϫⲉ ⲉⲓⲥ ϩⲏⲏⲧⲉ ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ϯⲛⲁⲧⲛⲛⲟⲟⲩ ⲙⲡⲁⲁⲅⲅⲉⲗⲟⲥ ϩⲁⲧⲉⲕϩⲏ ⲡⲁⲓ ⲉⲧⲛⲁⲥⲟϥⲧⲉ ⲛⲧⲉⲕϩⲓⲏ ⲙⲡⲉⲕⲙⲧⲟ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ
11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
ⲓ̅ⲁ̅ϩⲁⲙⲏⲛ ϯϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ⲛⲏⲧⲛ ϫⲉ ⲙⲡⲉϥⲧⲱⲟⲩⲛ ϩⲙ ⲡⲉϫⲡⲟ ⲛⲛⲉϩⲓⲟⲙⲉ ⲛϭⲓ ⲡⲉⲧⲟ ⲛⲛⲟϭ ⲉⲓⲱϩⲁⲛⲛⲏⲥ ⲡⲃⲁⲡⲧⲓⲥⲧⲏⲥ ⲡⲕⲟⲩⲓ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲣⲟϥ ⲟⲩⲛⲟϭ ⲉⲣⲟϥ ⲡⲉ ϩⲛ ⲧⲙⲛⲧⲣⲣⲟ ⲛⲙⲡⲏⲩⲉ
12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subject to violence, and the violent lay claim to it.
ⲓ̅ⲃ̅ϫⲓⲛ ⲛⲉϩⲟⲟⲩ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲓⲱϩⲁⲛⲛⲏⲥ ⲡⲃⲁⲡⲧⲓⲥⲧⲏⲥ ϣⲁⲉϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲉⲧⲉⲛⲟⲩ ⲧⲙⲛⲧⲣⲣⲟ ⲛⲙⲡⲏⲩⲉ ⲥⲉϫⲓ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ⲛϭⲟⲛⲥ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲛⲣⲉϥϫⲓⲛϭⲟⲛⲥ ⲧⲱⲣⲡ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ
13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.
ⲓ̅ⲅ̅ⲛⲉⲡⲣⲟⲫⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲧⲏⲣⲟⲩ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲡⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ⲛⲧⲁⲩⲡⲣⲟⲫⲏⲧⲉⲩⲉ ϣⲁⲓⲱϩⲁⲛⲛⲏⲥ
14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.
ⲓ̅ⲇ̅ⲁⲩⲱ ⲉϣϫⲉ ⲧⲉⲧⲛⲟⲩⲉϣϫⲓⲧϥ ⲛⲧⲟϥ ⲡⲉ ϩⲏⲗⲉⲓⲁⲥ ⲡⲉⲧⲛⲏⲩ
15 He who has ears, let him hear.
ⲓ̅ⲉ̅ⲡⲉⲧⲉⲟⲩⲛⲧϥⲙⲁⲁϫⲉ ⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲉⲥⲱⲧⲙ ⲙⲁⲣⲉϥⲥⲱⲧⲙ
16 To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:
ⲓ̅ⲋ̅ⲧⲉⲓⲅⲉⲛⲉⲁ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲓⲛⲁⲧⲛⲧⲱⲛⲥ ⲉⲛⲓⲙ ⲉⲥⲧⲛⲧⲱⲛ ⲉϩⲉⲛϣⲏⲣⲉ ϣⲏⲙ ⲉⲩϩⲙⲟⲟⲥ ϩⲛ ⲛⲁⲅⲟⲣⲁ ⲛⲁⲓ ⲉⲧⲙⲟⲩⲧⲉ ⲉⲛⲉⲩϣⲃⲉⲉⲣ
17 ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’
ⲓ̅ⲍ̅ⲉⲩϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲁⲛϫⲱ ⲉⲣⲱⲧⲛ ⲙⲡⲉⲧⲛϭⲟⲥϭⲥ ⲁⲛⲧⲟⲉⲓⲧ ⲙⲡⲉⲧⲛⲛⲉϩⲡⲉ
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’
ⲓ̅ⲏ̅ⲁϥⲉⲓ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲛϭⲓ ⲓⲱϩⲁⲛⲛⲏⲥ ⲉⲛϥⲟⲩⲱⲙ ⲁⲛ ⲟⲩⲇⲉ ⲛϥⲥⲱ ⲁⲛ ⲡⲉϫⲁⲩ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩⲛⲟⲩⲇⲁⲓⲙⲱⲛⲓⲟⲛ ϩⲓⲱⲱϥ
19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at this glutton and drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is vindicated by her actions.”
ⲓ̅ⲑ̅ⲁϥⲉⲓ ⲛϭⲓ ⲡϣⲏⲣⲉ ⲙⲡⲣⲱⲙⲉ ⲉϥⲟⲩⲱⲙ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲉϥⲥⲱ ⲡⲉϫⲁⲩ ϫⲉ ⲉⲓⲥ ⲟⲩⲣⲱⲙⲉ ⲛⲣⲉϥⲟⲩⲱⲙ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲛⲣⲉϥⲥⲉⲏⲣⲡ ⲛϣⲃⲏⲣⲧⲉⲗⲱⲛⲏⲥ ϩⲓⲣⲉϥⲣⲛⲟⲃⲉ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁⲥⲧⲙⲁⲓⲟ ⲛϭⲓ ⲧⲥⲟⲫⲓⲁ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛ ⲛⲉⲥϩⲃⲏⲩⲉ
20 Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of His miracles had been performed, because they did not repent.
ⲕ̅ⲧⲟⲧⲉ ⲁϥⲁⲣⲭⲉⲓ ⲛϭⲓ ⲓⲏⲥ ⲛⲛⲟϭⲛⲉϭ ⲛⲙⲡⲟⲗⲓⲥ ⲛⲁⲓ ⲛⲧⲁⲡⲉϩⲟⲩⲟ ⲛⲛⲉϥϭⲟⲙ ϣⲱⲡⲉ ϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲛϩⲏⲧⲟⲩ ϫⲉ ⲙⲡⲟⲩⲙⲉⲧⲁⲛⲟⲓ
21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
ⲕ̅ⲁ̅ϫⲉ ⲟⲩⲟⲓ ⲛⲏ ⲭⲟⲣⲁⲍⲉⲓⲛ ⲟⲩⲟⲓ ⲛⲏ ⲃⲏⲇⲥⲁⲓⲇⲁ ϫⲉ ⲉⲛⲉⲛⲧⲁⲛϭⲟⲙ ⲛⲧⲁⲩϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲛϩⲏⲧⲧⲏⲩⲧⲛ ϣⲱⲡⲉ ϩⲛ ⲧⲩⲣⲟⲥ ⲙⲛ ⲥⲓⲇⲱⲛ ⲉϣϫⲉ ⲁⲩⲙⲉⲧⲁⲛⲟⲉⲓ ϩⲛ ⲟⲩϭⲟⲟⲩⲛⲉ ⲙⲛⲟⲩⲕⲣⲙⲉⲥ
22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
ⲕ̅ⲃ̅ⲡⲗⲏⲛ ϯϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ⲛⲏⲧⲛ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩⲛ ⲟⲩⲙⲧⲟⲛ ⲛⲁϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲛⲧⲩⲣⲟⲥ ⲙⲛ ⲥⲓⲇⲱⲛ ⲙⲡⲉϩⲟⲟⲩ ⲛⲧⲉⲕⲣⲓⲥⲓⲥ ⲉϩⲟⲩⲉⲉⲣⲱⲧⲛ
23 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. (Hadēs g86)
ⲕ̅ⲅ̅ⲛⲧⲟ ϩⲱⲱⲧⲉ ⲕⲁⲫⲁⲣⲛⲁⲟⲩⲙ ⲙⲏ ⲧⲉⲛⲁϫⲓⲥⲉ ϣⲁ ⲉϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲉⲧⲡⲉ ⲧⲉⲛⲁⲃⲱⲕ ⲉⲡⲉⲥⲏⲧ ϣⲁⲁⲙⲛⲧⲉ ϫⲉ ⲉⲛⲉⲛⲧⲁⲛϭⲟⲙ ⲛⲧⲁⲩϣⲱⲡⲉ ϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲛϩⲏⲧⲉ ϣⲱⲡⲉ ϩⲛ ⲥⲟⲇⲟⲙⲁ ⲙⲛ ⲅⲟⲙⲟⲣⲣⲁ ⲛⲉⲩⲛⲁϭⲱ ⲡⲉ ϣⲁⲡⲟⲟⲩ ⲛϩⲟⲟⲩ (Hadēs g86)
24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”

25 At that time Jesus declared, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.
ⲕ̅ⲉ̅ϩⲙⲡⲉⲩⲟⲉⲓϣ ⲉⲧⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲁϥⲟⲩⲱϣⲃ ⲛϭⲓ ⲓⲏⲥ ⲉϥϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ϯⲉⲝⲟⲙⲟⲗⲟⲅⲉⲓ ⲛⲁⲕ ⲡⲁⲉⲓⲱⲧ ⲡϫⲟⲉⲓⲥ ⲛⲧⲡⲉ ⲙⲛ ⲡⲕⲁϩ ϫⲉ ⲛⲁⲓ ⲁⲕϩⲟⲡⲟⲩ ⲉⲛⲥⲟⲫⲟⲥ ⲙⲛ ⲛⲥⲁⲃⲉⲉⲩ ⲁⲕϭⲟⲗⲡⲟⲩ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲛⲛϣⲏⲣⲉ ϣⲏⲙ
