< Leviticus 11 >

1 The LORD spoke again to Moses and Aaron, telling them,
And the LORD spake unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them,
2 “Say to the Israelites, ‘Of all the beasts of the earth, these ones you may eat:
Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the living things which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth.
3 You may eat any animal that has a split hoof completely divided and that chews the cud.
Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, [and] cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat.
4 But of those that only chew the cud or only have a divided hoof, you are not to eat the following: The camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.
Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that part the hoof: the camel, because he cheweth the cud but parteth not the hoof, he is unclean unto you.
5 The rock badger, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.
And the coney, because he cheweth the cud but parteth not the hoof, he is unclean unto you.
6 The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.
And the hare, because she cheweth the cud but parteth not the hoof, she is unclean unto you.
7 And the pig, though it has a split hoof completely divided, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you.
And the swine, because he parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, but cheweth not the cud, he is unclean unto you.
8 You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.
Of their flesh ye shall not eat, and their carcases ye shall not touch; they are unclean unto you.
9 Of all the creatures that live in the water, whether in the seas or in the streams, you may eat anything with fins and scales.
These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat.
10 But the following among all the teeming life and creatures in the water are detestable to you: everything in the seas or streams that does not have fins and scales.
And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of all the living creatures that are in the waters, they are an abomination unto you,
11 They shall be an abomination to you; you must not eat their meat, and you must detest their carcasses.
and they shall be an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, and their carcases ye shall have in abomination.
12 Everything in the water that does not have fins and scales shall be detestable to you.
Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that is an abomination unto you.
13 Additionally, you are to detest the following birds, and they must not be eaten because they are detestable: the eagle, the bearded vulture, the black vulture,
And these ye shall have in abomination among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the gier eagle, and the ospray;
14 the kite, any kind of falcon,
and the kite, and the falcon after its kind;
15 any kind of raven,
every raven after its kind;
16 the ostrich, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk,
and the ostrich, and the night hawk, and the seamew, and the hawk after its kind;
17 the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl,
and the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl;
18 the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey,
and the horned owl, and the pelican, and the vulture;
19 the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat.
and the stork, the heron after its kind, and the hoopoe, and the bat.
20 All flying insects that walk on all fours are detestable to you.
All winged creeping things that go upon all four are an abomination unto you.
21 However, you may eat the following kinds of flying insects that walk on all fours: those having jointed legs above their feet for hopping on the ground.
Yet these may ye eat of all winged creeping things that go upon all four, which have legs above their feet, to leap withal upon the earth;
22 Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket, or grasshopper.
even these of them ye may eat; the locust after its kind, and the bald locust after its kind, and the cricket after its kind, and the grasshopper after its kind.
23 All other flying insects that have four legs are detestable to you.
But all winged creeping things, which have four feet, are an abomination unto you.
24 These creatures will make you unclean. Whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening,
And by these ye shall become unclean: whosoever toucheth the carcase of them shall be unclean until the even:
25 and whoever picks up one of their carcasses must wash his clothes, and he will be unclean until evening.
And whosoever beareth [aught] of the carcase of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.
26 Every animal with hooves not completely divided or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you. Whoever touches any of them will be unclean.
Every beast which parteth the hoof, and is not clovenfooted, nor cheweth the cud, is unclean unto you: every one that toucheth them shall be unclean.
27 All the four-footed animals that walk on their paws are unclean for you; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening,
And whatsoever goeth upon its paws, among all beasts that go on all four, they are unclean unto you: whoso toucheth their carcase shall be unclean until the even.
28 and anyone who picks up a carcass must wash his clothes, and he will be unclean until evening. They are unclean for you.
And he that beareth the carcase of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: they are unclean unto you.
29 The following creatures that move along the ground are unclean for you: the mole, the mouse, any kind of great lizard,
And these are they which are unclean unto you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth; the weasel, and the mouse, and the great lizard after its kind,
30 the gecko, the monitor lizard, the common lizard, the skink, and the chameleon.
and the gecko, and the land-crocodile, and the lizard, and the sand-lizard, and the chameleon.
31 These animals are unclean for you among all the crawling creatures. Whoever touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until evening.
These are they which are unclean to you among all that creep: whosoever doth touch them, when they are dead, shall be unclean until the even.
32 When one of them dies and falls on something, that article becomes unclean; any article of wood, clothing, leather, sackcloth, or any implement used for work must be rinsed with water and will remain unclean until evening; then it will be clean.
And upon whatsoever any of them, when they are dead, doth fall, it shall be unclean; whether it be any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, whatsoever vessel it be, wherewith any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the even; then shall it be clean.
33 If any of them falls into a clay pot, everything in it will be unclean; you must break the pot.
And every earthen vessel, whereinto any of them falleth, whatsoever is in it shall be unclean, and it ye shall break.
34 Any food coming into contact with water from that pot will be unclean, and any drink in such a container will be unclean.
All food [therein] which may be eaten, that on which water cometh, shall be unclean: and all drink that may be drunk in every [such] vessel shall be unclean.
35 Anything upon which one of their carcasses falls will be unclean. If it is an oven or cooking pot, it must be smashed; it is unclean and will remain unclean for you.
And every thing whereupon [any part] of their carcase falleth shall be unclean; whether oven, or range for pots, it shall be broken in pieces: they are unclean, and shall be unclean unto you.
36 Nevertheless, a spring or cistern containing water will remain clean, but one who touches a carcass in it will be unclean.
Nevertheless a fountain or a pit wherein is a gathering of water shall be clean: but that which toucheth their carcase shall be unclean.
37 If a carcass falls on any seed for sowing, the seed is clean;
And if [aught] of their carcase fall upon any sowing seed which is to be sown, it is clean.
38 but if water has been put on the seed and a carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you.
But if water be put upon the seed, and [aught] of their carcase fall thereon, it is unclean unto you.
39 If an animal that you may eat dies, anyone who touches the carcass will be unclean until evening.
And if any beast, of which ye may eat, die; he that toucheth the carcase thereof shall be unclean until the even.
40 Whoever eats from the carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening, and anyone who picks up the carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening.
And he that eateth of the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: he also that beareth the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.
41 Every creature that moves along the ground is detestable; it must not be eaten.
And every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth is an abomination; it shall not be eaten.
42 Do not eat any creature that moves along the ground, whether it crawls on its belly or walks on four or more feet; for such creatures are detestable.
Whatsoever goeth upon the belly, and whatsoever goeth upon all four, or whatsoever hath many feet, even all creeping things that creep upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are an abomination.
43 Do not defile yourselves by any crawling creature; do not become unclean or defiled by them.
Ye shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creepeth, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby.
44 For I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy, because I am holy. You must not defile yourselves by any creature that crawls along the ground.
For I am the LORD your God: sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that moveth upon the earth.
45 For I am the LORD, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt so that I would be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.
For I am the LORD that brought you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.
46 This is the law regarding animals, birds, all living creatures that move in the water, and all creatures that crawl along the ground.
This is the law of the beast, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth:
47 You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between animals that may be eaten and those that may not.’”
to make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the living thing that may be eaten and the living thing that may not be eaten.
