< Leviticus 11 >

1 The LORD spoke again to Moses and Aaron, telling them,
And the Lord spoke unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them,
2 “Say to the Israelites, ‘Of all the beasts of the earth, these ones you may eat:
Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye may eat among all the beasts that are on the earth.
3 You may eat any animal that has a split hoof completely divided and that chews the cud.
Whatsoever divideth the hoof, and is cloven-footed, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that may ye eat.
4 But of those that only chew the cud or only have a divided hoof, you are not to eat the following: The camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.
But these shall ye not eat, of those that chew the cud, or of those that divide the hoof: the camel; because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.
5 The rock badger, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.
And the cony; because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.
6 The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.
And the hare; because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.
7 And the pig, though it has a split hoof completely divided, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you.
And the swine; because he divideth the hoof, and is cloven-footed, but he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean unto you.
8 You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.
Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch; they are unclean unto you.
9 Of all the creatures that live in the water, whether in the seas or in the streams, you may eat anything with fins and scales.
These may ye eat, of all that are in the waters: all that have fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them may ye eat.
10 But the following among all the teeming life and creatures in the water are detestable to you: everything in the seas or streams that does not have fins and scales.
But all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of whatever moveth in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, shall be an abomination unto you:
11 They shall be an abomination to you; you must not eat their meat, and you must detest their carcasses.
And an abomination shall they remain unto you; of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcasses ye shall have in abomination.
12 Everything in the water that does not have fins and scales shall be detestable to you.
Whatsoever hath not fins and scales in the waters, shall be an abomination unto you.
13 Additionally, you are to detest the following birds, and they must not be eaten because they are detestable: the eagle, the bearded vulture, the black vulture,
And these shall ye have in abomination among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: The eagle, and the ossifrage, and the osprey,
14 the kite, any kind of falcon,
And the vulture, and the kite after his kind;
15 any kind of raven,
Every raven after his kind:
16 the ostrich, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk,
And the ostrich, and the night-hawk, and the cuckoo, and the hawk after his kind;
17 the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl,
And the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl,
18 the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey,
And the swan, and the pelican, and the gier-eagle,
19 the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat.
And the stork, the heron after his kind, and the lapwing, and the bat.
20 All flying insects that walk on all fours are detestable to you.
All flying insects that walk upon four feet, shall be an abomination unto you.
21 However, you may eat the following kinds of flying insects that walk on all fours: those having jointed legs above their feet for hopping on the ground.
Yet these may ye eat, among all the flying insects that walk on four feet, which have spring-legs above their feet, to leap therewith upon the earth.
22 Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket, or grasshopper.
These of them may ye eat: The locust after its kind, and the sol'am after its kind, and the chargol after its kind, and the chagab after its kind.
23 All other flying insects that have four legs are detestable to you.
But all flying insects, which have four feet, shall be an abomination unto you;
24 These creatures will make you unclean. Whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening,
And through these shall ye be rendered unclean: whosoever toucheth the carcass of them shall be unclean until the evening;
25 and whoever picks up one of their carcasses must wash his clothes, and he will be unclean until evening.
And whosoever beareth aught of their carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening.
26 Every animal with hooves not completely divided or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you. Whoever touches any of them will be unclean.
Every species of beast, which divideth the hoof and is not cloven-footed nor cheweth the cud, is unclean unto you: every one that toucheth the same shall be unclean.
27 All the four-footed animals that walk on their paws are unclean for you; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening,
And all that walk upon their paws, among all manner of beasts that walk on four feet, are unclean unto you; whosoever toucheth their carcass shall be unclean until the evening.
28 and anyone who picks up a carcass must wash his clothes, and he will be unclean until evening. They are unclean for you.
And he that beareth their carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening: unclean shall they be unto you.
29 The following creatures that move along the ground are unclean for you: the mole, the mouse, any kind of great lizard,
And these shall be unclean unto you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth: The weasel, and the mouse, and the tortoise after its kind,
30 the gecko, the monitor lizard, the common lizard, the skink, and the chameleon.
And the hedgehog, and the chameleon, and the lizard, and the snail, and the mole.
31 These animals are unclean for you among all the crawling creatures. Whoever touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until evening.
These shall be unclean to you among all that creep: whosoever doth touch them, when they are dead, shall be unclean until the evening.
32 When one of them dies and falls on something, that article becomes unclean; any article of wood, clothing, leather, sackcloth, or any implement used for work must be rinsed with water and will remain unclean until evening; then it will be clean.
And every thing upon which any part of them, when they are dead, doth fall, shall be unclean; whether it be any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, every vessel wherewith any work can be done, must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the evening, when it shall be clean.
33 If any of them falls into a clay pot, everything in it will be unclean; you must break the pot.
And every earthen vessel whereinto any part of them falleth, whatsoever is in it shall be unclean; and itself shall ye break.
34 Any food coming into contact with water from that pot will be unclean, and any drink in such a container will be unclean.
All kinds of food which may be eaten, on which water cometh, shall be unclean: and all drink that may be drunk, shall be rendered unclean in every vessel.
35 Anything upon which one of their carcasses falls will be unclean. If it is an oven or cooking pot, it must be smashed; it is unclean and will remain unclean for you.
And every thing whereupon any part of their carcass falleth, shall be unclean; an oven, or ranges for pots, shall be broken down, they are unclean; and unclean shall they be unto you.
36 Nevertheless, a spring or cistern containing water will remain clean, but one who touches a carcass in it will be unclean.
Nevertheless, a fountain, or pit, receptacles for water, shall be clean; but he that toucheth their carcass shall be unclean.
37 If a carcass falls on any seed for sowing, the seed is clean;
And if any part of their carcass fall upon any sowing-seed which hath been sown, it shall be clean.
38 but if water has been put on the seed and a carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you.
But if any water be put upon the seed, and any part of their carcass fall thereon, it shall be unclean unto you.
39 If an animal that you may eat dies, anyone who touches the carcass will be unclean until evening.
And if any cattle die, which is allowed to you as food: he that toucheth its carcass shall be unclean until the evening.
40 Whoever eats from the carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening, and anyone who picks up the carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening.
And he that eateth of its carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening; he also that beareth its carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening.
41 Every creature that moves along the ground is detestable; it must not be eaten.
And every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth is an abomination, it shall not be eaten.
42 Do not eat any creature that moves along the ground, whether it crawls on its belly or walks on four or more feet; for such creatures are detestable.
Whatsoever goeth upon the belly, and whatsoever goeth upon four feet, down to whatsoever hath many feet among all creeping things that creep upon the earth, shall ye not eat; for they are an abomination.
43 Do not defile yourselves by any crawling creature; do not become unclean or defiled by them.
Ye shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creepeth; and ye shall not make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby.
44 For I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy, because I am holy. You must not defile yourselves by any creature that crawls along the ground.
For I am the Lord your God; ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
45 For I am the LORD, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt so that I would be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.
For I am the Lord that have brought you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God; ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.
46 This is the law regarding animals, birds, all living creatures that move in the water, and all creatures that crawl along the ground.
This is the law of the beasts, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth:
47 You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between animals that may be eaten and those that may not.’”
To distinguish between the unclean and the clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten.
