< Joshua 9 >

1 Now when news of this reached all the kings west of the Jordan—those in the hill country, the foothills, and all along the coast of the Great Sea toward Lebanon (the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites)—
Mootonni Heetotaa, Amoorotaa, Kanaʼaanotaa, Feerzotaa, Hiiwotaatii fi Yebuusotaa kanneen gama lixa Yordaanos biyya gaaraa, lafa gammoojjiitii fi qarqara Galaana Guddichaa kan hamma Libaanoonitti jiru keessa jiraatan yommuu waan kana dhagaʼanitti,
2 they came together to wage war against Joshua and Israel.
Iyyaasuu fi Israaʼelitti waraana banuuf walitti qabaman.
3 But the people of Gibeon, having heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,
Namoonni Gibeʼoon garuu yommuu waan Iyyaasuun Yerikoo fi Aayi godhe dhagaʼanitti,
4 acted deceptively and set out as envoys, carrying on their donkeys worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended.
isaanis gama isaaniitiin daba hojjechuuf mariʼatan; isaanis nama karaa deemu fakkaatanii keeshaa moofaʼee fi qalqalloo daadhii wayinii kan dulloomee tarsaʼee erbame harree isaaniitti feʼatanii qajeelan.
5 They put worn, patched sandals on their feet and threadbare clothing on their bodies, and their whole supply of bread was dry and moldy.
Kophee moofaʼee erbame miillatti kaaʼatanii wayyaa moofaʼe uffatan. Buddeenni isaan fudhatanii deeman hundis goggogaa fi kan arraaʼee ture.
6 They went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, “We have come from a distant land; please make a treaty with us.”
Isaanis qubata Gilgaalitti Iyyaasuu bira dhaqanii isaa fi namoota Israaʼeliin, “Nu biyya fagoodhaa dhufne; kanaafuu kottaa walii galtee godhannaa” jedhan.
7 But the men of Israel said to the Hivites, “Perhaps you dwell near us. How can we make a treaty with you?”
Namoonni Israaʼel immoo Hiiwotaan, “Tarii isin asuma nutti dhiʼoo jiraattu taʼa; yoos nu akkamiin isin wajjin walii galtee godhachuu dandeenya ree?” jedhan.
8 “We are your servants,” they said to Joshua. Then Joshua asked them, “Who are you and where have you come from?”
Isaan garuu Iyyaasuudhaan, “Nu garboota kee ti” jedhan. Iyyaasuunis, “Isin eenyuu dha? Eessaa dhuftani?” jedhee isaan gaafate.
9 “Your servants have come from a very distant land,” they replied, “because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard the reports about Him: all that He did in Egypt,
Isaanis akkana jedhanii deebisaniif; “Nu garboonni kee sababii maqaa Waaqayyo Waaqa keetii dhageenyeef biyya akka malee fagootii dhufne. Nu oduu waaʼee isaatii fi waan inni biyya Gibxii keessatti hojjete hundumaa dhageenyeerraatii;
10 and all that He did to the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan—Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth.
waan inni mootota Amoorotaa lamaan warra gama baʼa Yordaanos jiraatan jechuunis Sihoon mootii Heshboonii fi Oogi mootii Baashaan kan Ashtaaroti bulchaa ture sana godhe hundumaa dhageenyeerra.
11 So the elders and inhabitants of our land told us, ‘Take provisions for your journey; go to meet them and say to them: We are your servants. Please make a treaty with us.’
Maanguddoonni keenyaa fi jiraattonni biyya keenyaa hundinuu, ‘Karaa keessaniif waan nyaattan harkatti qabadhaatii isaan arguu dhaqaa, “Nu garboota keessanii dha; kanaafuu kottaa walii galtee godhannaa” jedhaanii’ nuun jedhan.
12 This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But take a look, it is now dry and moldy.
Buddeenni keenya kun gaafa nu hidhannee gara keessan dhufuuf manaa baane hoʼaa ture. Amma garuu akka inni goggogee arraaʼe argaa.
13 These wineskins were new when we filled them, but look, they are cracked. And these clothes and sandals are worn out from our very long journey.”
14 Then the men of Israel sampled their provisions, but did not seek the counsel of the LORD.
Namoonni Israaʼel galaa isaanii irraa waa fudhatan malee Waaqayyoon gorsa hin gaafanne.
15 And Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the congregation swore an oath to them.
Iyyaasuunis akka isaan jiraataniif isaan wajjin walii galtee nagaa godhe; hooggantoonni waldaas waan kana kakuudhaan mirkaneessan.
16 Three days after they had made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites learned that they were neighbors, living among them.
Warri Israaʼel immoo erga Gibeʼoonota wajjin walii galtee godhatan guyyaa sadii booddee akka jarri warra naannoo isaanii kanneen isaanitti dhiʼoo jiraatan taʼan dhagaʼan.
17 So the Israelites set out and on the third day arrived at their cities—Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim.
Kanaafuu Israaʼeloonni kaʼanii guyyaa sadaffaatti gara magaalaa isaanii jechuunis gara Gibeʼoon, Kefiiraa, gara Biʼeerootii fi Kiriyaati Yeʼaariim dhufan.
18 But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. And the whole congregation grumbled against the leaders.
Israaʼeloonni garuu sababii hooggantoonni waldaa maqaa Waaqayyo Waaqa Israaʼeliitiin isaaniif kakatanii turaniitiif isaan hin tuqne. Waldaan sun guutuunis hooggantootatti guungume;
19 All the leaders answered, “We have sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we cannot touch them.
hooggantoonni hundi garuu akkana jedhanii deebisan; “Nu Waaqayyo Waaqa Israaʼeliin isaanii kakanneerra; kanaafuu nu amma isaan tuquu hin dandeenyu.
20 This is how we will treat them: We will let them live, so that no wrath will fall on us because of the oath we swore to them.”
Wanni nu isaan goonu kana: Akka kakuu isaanii kakanne sana cabsinee dheekkamsi nurra hin buuneef akka isaan jiraataniif ittuma dhiifna.”
21 They continued, “Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers for the whole congregation.” So the leaders kept their promise.
Hooggantoonni sunis ittuma fufanii, “Jarri haa jiraatan; garuu guutummaa sabaatiif warra muka muranii fi warra bishaan waraaban haa taʼan” jedhan. Akkasiinis kakuun hooggantoonni isaaniif galan sun ni eegame.
22 Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, “Why did you deceive us by telling us you live far away from us, when in fact you live among us?
Iyyaasuunis Gibeʼoonota ofitti waamee akkana jedheen; “Isin maaliif utuma nutti dhiʼoo jiraattanuu, ‘Nu biyya isin irraa fagoo taʼe keessa jiraanna’ jettanii nu gowwoomsitan?
23 Now therefore you are under a curse and will perpetually serve as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God.”
Isin amma abaarsa jala jirtu; tokkoon keessan iyyuu mana Waaqa kootiif muka muruu fi bishaan waraabuu jalaa hin baatan.”
24 The Gibeonites answered, “Your servants were told clearly that the LORD your God had commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land and wipe out all its inhabitants before you. So we greatly feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we have done this.
Isaanis akkana jedhanii Iyyaasuuf deebii kennan; “Akka Waaqayyo Waaqni kee akka Museen biyyaattii guutuu isinii kennuu fi akka inni warra achi jiraatan hunda fuula keessan duraa balleesuuf garbicha isaa Musee ajaje nu garboota keetti dhugumaan himameera. Kanaafuu nu sababii keessaniif jennee lubbuu keenyaaf sodaanne; wanni nu waan kana gooneefis kanuma.
25 Now we are in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you.”
Nu kunoo amma harka kee keessa jirra. Atis waan gaarii fi qajeelaa seete hundumaa nurratti raawwadhu.”
26 So Joshua did this and delivered them from the hands of the Israelites, and they did not kill the Gibeonites.
Kanaafuu Iyyaasuun Israaʼeloota duraa isaan baase; Israaʼeloonnis isaan hin ajjeefne.
27 On that day he made them woodcutters and water carriers, as they are to this day for the congregation of the LORD and for the altar at the place He would choose.
Innis guyyuma sana Gibeʼoonota sana saba hundaaf, akkasumas iddoo Waaqayyo filatutti iddoo aarsaa Waaqayyootiif warra muka muranii fi warra bishaan waraaban isaan godhe. Isaanis hamma harʼaatti kanuma hojjetu.
