< Jonah 2 >

1 From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the LORD his God,
And Jonas prayed to the Lord his God out of the belly of the whale,
2 saying: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me. From the belly of Sheol I called for help, and You heard my voice. (Sheol h7585)
and said, I cried in my affliction to the Lord my God, and he listened to me, [even] to my cry out of the belly of hell: you heard my voice. (Sheol h7585)
3 For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current swirled about me; all Your breakers and waves swept over me.
You did cast me into the depths of the heart of the sea, and the floods compassed me: all your billows and your waves have passed upon me.
4 At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’
And I said, I am cast out of your presence: shall I indeed look again towards your holy temple?
5 The waters engulfed me to take my life; the watery depths closed around me; the seaweed wrapped around my head.
Water was poured around me to the soul: the lowest deep compassed me, my head went down
6 To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me barred me in forever! But You raised my life from the pit, O LORD my God!
to the clefts of the mountains; I went down into the earth, whose bars are the everlasting barriers: yet, O Lord my God, let my ruined life be restored.
7 As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD. My prayer went up to You, to Your holy temple.
When my soul was failing me, I remembered the Lord; and may my prayer come to you into your holy temple.
8 Those who cling to worthless idols forsake His loving devotion.
They that observe vanities and lies have forsaken their own mercy.
9 But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. I will fulfill what I have vowed. Salvation is from the LORD!”
But I will sacrifice to you with the voice of praise and thanksgiving: all that I have vowed I will pay to you, the Lord of [my] salvation.
10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
And the whale was commanded by the Lord, and it cast up Jonas on the dry [land].
