Job 5
1 “Call out if you please, but who will answer? To which of the holy ones will you turn?
試みに呼んでみよ、だれかあなたに答える者があるか。どの聖者にあなたは頼もうとするのか。
2 For resentment kills a fool, and envy slays the simple.
確かに、憤りは愚かな者を殺し、ねたみはあさはかな者を死なせる。
3 I have seen a fool taking root, but suddenly his house was cursed.
わたしは愚かな者の根を張るのを見た、しかしわたしは、にわかにそのすみかをのろった。
4 His sons are far from safety, crushed in court without a defender.
その子らは安きを得ず、町の門でしえたげられても、これを救う者がない。
5 The hungry consume his harvest, taking it even from the thorns, and the thirsty pant after his wealth.
その収穫は飢えた人が食べ、いばらの中からさえ、これを奪う。また、かわいた者はその財産をあえぎ求める。
6 For distress does not spring from the dust, and trouble does not sprout from the ground.
苦しみは、ちりから起るものでなく、悩みは土から生じるものでない。
7 Yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward.
人が生れて悩みを受けるのは、火の子が上に飛ぶにひとしい。
8 However, if I were you, I would appeal to God and lay my cause before Him—
しかし、わたしであるならば、神に求め、神に、わたしの事をまかせる。
9 the One who does great and unsearchable things, wonders without number.
彼は大いなる事をされるかたで、測り知れない、その不思議なみわざは数えがたい。
10 He gives rain to the earth and sends water upon the fields.
彼は地に雨を降らせ、野に水を送られる。
11 He sets the lowly on high, so that mourners are lifted to safety.
彼は低い者を高くあげ、悲しむ者を引き上げて、安全にされる。
12 He thwarts the schemes of the crafty, so that their hands find no success.
彼は悪賢い者の計りごとを敗られる。それで何事もその手になし遂げることはできない。
13 He catches the wise in their craftiness, and sweeps away the plans of the cunning.
彼は賢い者を、彼ら自身の悪巧みによって捕え、曲った者の計りごとをくつがえされる。
14 They encounter darkness by day and grope at noon as in the night.
彼らは昼も、やみに会い、真昼にも、夜のように手探りする。
15 He saves the needy from the sword in their mouth and from the clutches of the powerful.
彼は貧しい者を彼らの口のつるぎから救い、また強い者の手から救われる。
16 So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth.
それゆえ乏しい者に望みがあり、不義はその口を閉じる。
17 Blessed indeed is the man whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.
見よ、神に戒められる人はさいわいだ。それゆえ全能者の懲しめを軽んじてはならない。
18 For He wounds, but He also binds; He strikes, but His hands also heal.
彼は傷つけ、また包み、撃ち、またその手をもっていやされる。
19 He will rescue you from six calamities; no harm will touch you in seven.
彼はあなたを六つの悩みから救い、七つのうちでも、災はあなたに触れることがない。
20 In famine He will redeem you from death, and in battle from the stroke of the sword.
ききんの時には、あなたをあがなって、死を免れさせ、いくさの時には、つるぎの力を免れさせられる。
21 You will be hidden from the scourge of the tongue, and will not fear havoc when it comes.
あなたは舌をもってむち打たれる時にも、おおい隠され、滅びが来る時でも、恐れることはない。
22 You will laugh at destruction and famine, and need not fear the beasts of the earth.
あなたは滅びと、ききんとを笑い、地の獣をも恐れることはない。
23 For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild animals will be at peace with you.
あなたは野の石と契約を結び、野の獣はあなたと和らぐからである。
24 You will know that your tent is secure, and find nothing amiss when inspecting your home.
あなたは自分の天幕の安全なことを知り、自分の家畜のおりを見回っても、欠けた物がなく、
25 You will know that your offspring will be many, your descendants like the grass of the earth.
また、あなたの子孫の多くなり、そのすえが地の草のようになるのを知るであろう。
26 You will come to the grave in full vigor, like a sheaf of grain gathered in season.
あなたは高齢に達して墓に入る、あたかも麦束をその季節になって打ち場に運びあげるようになるであろう。
27 Indeed, we have investigated, and it is true! So hear it and know for yourself.”
見よ、われわれの尋ねきわめた所はこのとおりだ。あなたはこれを聞いて、みずから知るがよい」。
