Job 29
1 And Job continued his discourse:
Et Job continuant à parler en discours relevés, dit:
2 “How I long for the months gone by, for the days when God watched over me,
O! qui me rendra les mois de jadis, et les jours, où Dieu me gardait,
3 when His lamp shone above my head, and by His light I walked through the darkness,
où, sa lampe brillant au-dessus de ma tête, à sa clarté je perçais les ténèbres;
4 when I was in my prime, when the friendship of God rested on my tent,
où j'étais au temps de mon automne; quand Dieu avec sa cour veillait sur ma tente;
5 when the Almighty was still with me and my children were around me,
quand le Tout-puissant était encore avec moi, qu'autour de moi j'avais mes enfants;
6 when my steps were bathed in cream and the rock poured out for me streams of oil!
quand mes pieds baignaient dans le lait, et que le rocher me versait des ruisseaux d'huile;
7 When I went out to the city gate and took my seat in the public square,
quand je me rendais à la Porte dans la ville, et que je mettais mon siège dans la Place?
8 the young men saw me and withdrew, and the old men rose to their feet.
A mon aspect les jeunes se tiraient en arrière, et les vieux se levaient, et demeuraient debout;
9 The princes refrained from speaking and covered their mouths with their hands.
les princes s'arrêtaient en parlant, et mettaient leur main sur leur bouche;
10 The voices of the nobles were hushed, and their tongues stuck to the roofs of their mouths.
la voix des nobles restait muette, et leur langue, collée à leur palais.
11 For those who heard me called me blessed, and those who saw me commended me,
Car, sur ma renommée, on me disait heureux, et à ma vue, on me donnait des éloges.
12 because I rescued the poor who cried out and the fatherless who had no helper.
C'est que je sauvais le pauvre gémissant, et l'orphelin qui était sans aide;
13 The dying man blessed me, and I made the widow’s heart sing for joy.
l'homme qui périssait, avait à me bénir, et je mettais la joie dans le cœur de la veuve;
14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; justice was my robe and my turban.
je prenais la justice pour mon vêtement, et elle me prenait pour son vêtement; mon équité m'était comme un manteau et un turban;
15 I served as eyes to the blind and as feet to the lame.
je servais d'œil à l'aveugle, et de pieds au boiteux;
16 I was a father to the needy, and I took up the case of the stranger.
j'étais un père pour le pauvre, et je connaissais de la cause de l'inconnu,
17 I shattered the fangs of the unjust and snatched the prey from his teeth.
et je brisais la mâchoire du méchant, et d'entre ses dents lui arrachais sa proie.
18 So I thought: ‘I will die in my nest and multiply my days as the sand.
Aussi je me disais: Je mourrai avec mon aire, et comme le Phénix, je prolongerai mes jours;
19 My roots will spread out to the waters, and the dew will rest nightly on my branches.
ma racine sera exposée aux eaux, et la rosée passera la nuit sur mes branches;
20 My glory is ever new within me, and my bow is renewed in my hand.’
ma gloire me restera toujours jeune, et mon arc en ma main prendra force nouvelle.
21 Men listened to me with expectation, waiting silently for my counsel.
Ils m'écoutaient avec attente, et à mon avis ils se taisaient;
22 After my words, they spoke no more; my speech settled on them like dew.
après moi ils ne prenaient plus la parole, et sur eux mon discours s'épanchait.
23 They waited for me as for rain and drank in my words like spring showers.
Ils m'attendaient, comme on attend la rosée, et leur bouche s'ouvrait, comme pour recevoir une pluie du printemps.
24 If I smiled at them, they did not believe it; the light of my countenance was precious.
Je leur souriais, quand ils perdaient courage; et ils ne pouvaient m'ôter la sérénité de mon front.
25 I chose their course and presided as chief. So I dwelt as a king among his troops, as a comforter of the mourners.
Si je prenais mon chemin vers eux, j'y avais la place d'un chef, et j'étais assis comme un roi, au milieu de la foule, comme un consolateur, parmi les affligés.
