Jeremiah 42

1 Then all the commanders of the forces, along with Johanan son of Kareah, Jezaniah son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest, approached

Et tous les chefs de l'armée, et Jochanan, fils de Karéah, et Jésanias, fils d'Osée, et tout le peuple, tant les petits que les grands, s'approchèrent,

2 Jeremiah the prophet and said, “May our petition come before you; pray to the LORD your God on behalf of this entire remnant. For few of us remain of the many, as you can see with your own eyes.

et dirent à Jérémie, le prophète: Accueille notre humble requête, et prie pour nous l'Éternel, ton Dieu, pour tous ces survivants, car de beaucoup nous ne restons plus qu'un petit nombre, ainsi que tu nous vois;

3 Pray that the LORD your God will tell us the way we should walk and the thing we should do.”

afin que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, nous indique le chemin où nous devons marcher, et la chose que nous avons à faire.

4 “I have heard you,” replied Jeremiah the prophet. “I will surely pray to the LORD your God as you request, and I will tell you everything that the LORD answers; I will not withhold a word from you.”

Et Jérémie, le prophète, leur dit: J'obéis; voici, je vais prier l'Éternel, votre Dieu, conformément à ce que vous avez dit; et tout ce que l'Éternel vous répondra, je vous le rapporterai, je ne vous en déroberai rien.

5 Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the LORD be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act upon every word that the LORD your God sends you to tell us.

Et ils dirent à Jérémie: Que l'Éternel nous soit un témoin fidèle et sûr, que nous ferons tout ce dont l'Éternel ton Dieu te chargera pour nous:

6 Whether it is pleasant or unpleasant, we will obey the voice of the LORD our God to whom we are sending you, so that it may go well with us, for we will obey the voice of the LORD our God!”

que ce soit du bien ou du mal, nous serons dociles à la voix de l'Éternel notre Dieu, vers qui nous t'envoyons, afin que bien nous en arrive, si nous sommes dociles à la voix de l'Éternel, notre Dieu.

7 After ten days the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah,

Et au bout de dix jours, la parole de l'Éternel fut adressée à Jérémie;

8 and he summoned Johanan son of Kareah, all the commanders of the forces who were with him, and all the people from the least to the greatest.

et il appela Jochanan, fils de Karéah, et tous les chefs de l'armée qui étaient avec lui, et tout le peuple, tant les petits que les grands,

9 Jeremiah told them, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your petition:

et il leur dit: Ainsi parle l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, auprès de qui vous m'avez envoyé pour lui présenter votre humble requête:

10 ‘If you will indeed stay in this land, then I will build you up and not tear you down; I will plant you and not uproot you, for I will relent of the disaster I have brought upon you.

Si de nouveau vous vous fixez dans ce pays, je vous édifierai, et ne vous détruirai point; et je vous planterai, et ne vous arracherai point, car je me repens du mal que je vous ai fait.

11 Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, whom you now fear; do not be afraid of him, declares the LORD, for I am with you to save you and deliver you from him.

Ne redoutez point le roi de Babel que vous redoutez! ne le redoutez point, dit l'Éternel, car je suis avec vous pour vous sauver et vous délivrer de sa main,

12 And I will show you compassion, and he will have compassion on you and restore you to your own land.’

et je lui inspirerai de la compassion pour vous, afin qu'il ait compassion de vous, et vous fasse rentrer dans votre pays.

13 But if you say, ‘We will not stay in this land,’ and you thus disobey the voice of the LORD your God,

Mais si vous dites: Nous ne resterons point dans ce pays, n'obéissant point à la voix de l'Éternel, votre Dieu,

14 and if you say, ‘No, but we will go to the land of Egypt and live there, where we will not see war or hear the sound of the ram’s horn or hunger for bread,’

et disant: Non, car nous irons au pays d'Egypte, où nous ne verrons point, de guerre, et n'entendrons point le son de la trompette, et n'aurons point faute de pain, et là nous nous fixerons… eh bien!

15 then hear the word of the LORD, O remnant of Judah! This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you are determined to go to Egypt and reside there,

alors, entendez la parole de l'Éternel, restes de Juda! Ainsi parle l'Éternel des armées, Dieu d'Israël: Si vous vous mettez en tête d'aller en Egypte, et si vous vous y rendez pour vous y fixer,

16 then the sword you fear will overtake you there, and the famine you dread will follow on your heels into Egypt, and you will die there.

l'épée dont vous avez peur, vous atteindra là, dans le pays d'Egypte, et la faim dont vous avez souci, s'attachera à vous là, en Egypte, et là vous mourrez.

17 So all who resolve to go to Egypt to reside there will die by sword and famine and plague. Not one of them will survive or escape the disaster I will bring upon them.’

Et tous ceux qui se mettront en tête d'aller en Egypte pour s'y fixer, périront par l'épée, par la famine et par la peste, et il n'en restera, n'en réchappera pas un des calamités que j'enverrai contre eux.

18 For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Just as My anger and wrath were poured out on the residents of Jerusalem, so will My wrath be poured out on you if you go to Egypt. You will become an object of cursing and horror, of vilification and disgrace, and you will never see this place again.’

Car ainsi parle l'Éternel des armées, Dieu d'Israël: De même que ma colère et ma fureur s'est répandue sur les habitants de Jérusalem, de même ma fureur se répandra sur vous, si vous allez en Egypte, et vous serez en exécration, et en horreur, et en malédiction et en dérision, et vous ne reverrez plus ce lieu.

19 The LORD has told you, O remnant of Judah, ‘Do not go to Egypt.’ Know for sure that I have warned you today!

L'Éternel vous dit, restes de Juda: N'allez point en Egypte! sachez que je vous en adresse la sommation aujourd'hui.

20 For you have deceived yourselves by sending me to the LORD your God, saying, ‘Pray to the LORD our God on our behalf, and as for all that the LORD our God says, tell it to us and we will do it.’

Car vous vous abusez au péril de vos vies; car vous m'avez envoyé auprès de l'Éternel, votre Dieu, disant: Prie pour nous l'Éternel, notre Dieu, et rapporte-nous tout ce que l'Éternel, notre Dieu, dira, et nous le ferons.

21 For I have told you today, but you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD your God in all He has sent me to tell you.

Et je vous l'ai rapporté aujourd'hui; mais vous n'êtes point dociles à la voix de l'Éternel, votre Dieu, ni à tout ce dont Il m'a chargé pour vous.

22 Now therefore, know for sure that by sword and famine and plague you will die in the place where you desire to go to reside.”

Eh bien! sachez que vous périrez par l'épée, par la famine et par la peste, dans le lieu où vous avez envie d'aller vous fixer.
