Jeremiah 20
1 When Pashhur the priest, the son of Immer and the chief official in the house of the LORD, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things,
Or, Pachhour le prêtre, fils d’lmmêr, qui était surveillant en chef dans la maison de l’Eternel, avait entendu Jérémie prononcer ces prédictions.
2 he had Jeremiah the prophet beaten and put in the stocks at the Upper Gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the LORD.
Il frappa, lui Pachhour, le prophète Jérémie et l’enferma dans la prison qui se trouvait à la porte Supérieure de Benjamin, dans la maison de Dieu.
3 The next day, when Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “The LORD does not call you Pashhur, but Magor-missabib.
Quand, le lendemain, Pachhour fit sortir Jérémie de la prison, Jérémie lui dit: "Ce n’est pas Pachhour que te nomme l’Eternel, mais Epouvante tout autour."
4 For this is what the LORD says: ‘I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends. They will fall by the sword of their enemies before your very eyes. And I will hand Judah over to the king of Babylon, and he will carry them away to Babylon and put them to the sword.
Car ainsi parle l’Eternel: "Voici, je fais de toi une cause d’épouvante pour toi et pour tous tes amis; ceux-ci tomberont sous le glaive de leurs ennemis, et tes yeux en seront témoins; et tous les gens de Juda, je les livrerai au pouvoir du roi de Babylone, pour qu’il les emmène captifs à Babylone et les fasse périr par le glaive.
5 I will give away all the wealth of this city—all its products and valuables, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah—to their enemies. They will plunder them, seize them, and carry them off to Babylon.
Je livrerai, aussi toutes les richesses de cette ville, tous ses biens et toutes ses splendeurs; je livrerai tous les trésors des rois de Juda aux mains de leurs ennemis, qui les pilleront, les enlèveront et les transporteront à Babylone.
6 And you, Pashhur, and all who live in your house, will go into captivity. You will go to Babylon, and there you will die and be buried—you and all your friends to whom you have prophesied these lies.’”
Quant à toi, Pachhour, et à tous les habitants de ta maison, vous irez en captivité. C’Est à Babylone que tu viendras, c’est là que tu mourras et recevras: a sépulture, ainsi que tous tes amis à qui tu as prophétisé des, mensonges.
7 You have deceived me, O LORD, and I was deceived. You have overcome me and prevailed. I am a laughingstock all day long; everyone mocks me.
Eternel, tu m’as circonvenu, et je me suis laissé séduire; tu m’as pris de force, et tu as eu l’avantage. Tout le temps, je suis un objet de risée, chacun me honnit.
8 For whenever I speak, I cry out; I proclaim violence and destruction. For the word of the LORD has become to me a reproach and derision all day long.
Oui, chaque fois que je prends la parole, j’ai à protester hautement, j’ai à crier à la violence et à l’oppression; car la parole de l’Eternel devient pour moi une perpétuelle cause d’opprobre et d’avanies.
9 If I say, “I will not mention Him or speak any more in His name,” His message becomes a fire burning in my heart, shut up in my bones, and I become weary of holding it in, and I cannot prevail.
Je me disais bien: "Je ne veux plus penser à lui ni parler en son nom!" Mais alors il y avait au-dedans de moi comme un feu brûlant, contenu dans mes os; je me fatiguais à! e dompter, je ne pouvais.
10 For I have heard the whispering of many: “Terror is on every side! Report him; let us report him!” All my trusted friends watch for my fall: “Perhaps he will be deceived so that we may prevail against him and take our vengeance upon him.”
Cependant j’entendais les méchants propos de la foule, répandant la terreur tout autour: "Dénoncez! Nous le dénoncerons!" Tous ceux avec qui je vivais en paix guettaient ma chute: "Peut-être se laissera-t-il prendre, et pourrons-nous venir à bout de lui et assouvir notre vengeance sur sa personne."
11 But the LORD is with me like a fearsome warrior. Therefore, my persecutors will stumble and will not prevail. Since they have not succeeded, they will be utterly put to shame, with an everlasting disgrace that will never be forgotten.
Mais l’Eternel est avec moi comme un géant redoutable; c’est pourquoi mes persécuteurs trébucheront et seront réduits à l’impuissance; leur confusion sera extrême, car ils ne réussissent point, leur honte sera éternelle, inoubliable.
12 O LORD of Hosts, who examines the righteous, who sees the heart and mind, let me see Your vengeance upon them, for to You I have committed my cause.
O Eternel-Cebaot, qui éprouves le juste, qui sondes les reins et le coeur, je verrai la vengeance que tu tireras d’eux, car c’est à toi que j’ai remis ma cause.
13 Sing to the LORD! Praise the LORD! For He rescues the life of the needy from the hands of evildoers.
Chantez l’Eternel! Célébrez l’Eternel! car il sauve la vie du pauvre de la main des malfaiteurs!
14 Cursed be the day I was born! May the day my mother bore me never be blessed.
Maudit soit le jour où je suis né! Que le jour où ma mère m’a mis au monde ne soit point béni!
15 Cursed be the man who brought my father the news, saying, “A son is born to you,” bringing him great joy.
Maudit soit l’homme qui apporta la bonne nouvelle à mon père: "Il t’est né un enfant mâle", lui causant ainsi une grande joie!
16 May that man be like the cities that the LORD overthrew without compassion. May he hear an outcry in the morning and a battle cry at noon,
Que cet homme devienne semblable aux villes que Dieu bouleversa sans pitié! Qu’il entende des cris de guerre le matin et la trompette des combats à midi!
17 because he did not kill me in the womb so that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb forever enlarged.
Pourquoi ne m’a-t-il pas fait mourir dans le sein qui me portait? Ma mère m’eût servi de tombeau, et ses flancs eussent à jamais gardé leur fruit.
18 Why did I come out of the womb to see only trouble and sorrow, and to end my days in shame?
Pourquoi donc suis-je sorti du sein maternel pour voir misère et douleur, pour consumer mes jours dans l’opprobre?
