James 3
1 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.
আমার ভাইবোনেরা, তোমরা অনেকেই শিক্ষক হতে চেয়ো না, কারণ তোমরা জানো যে, আমরা যারা শিক্ষা দিই, আমাদের আরও কঠোরভাবে বিচার করা হবে।
2 We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to control his whole body.
আমরা সকলেই বিভিন্নভাবে ভুল করি। কেউ যদি তার কথাবার্তায় কখনও ভুল না করে, তাহলে সে সিদ্ধপুরুষ, সে তার সমস্ত শরীর বশে রাখতে সমর্থ।
3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can guide the whole animal.
ঘোড়াকে বশে রাখার জন্য যখন আমরা তাদের মুখে লাগাম পরাই, তখন আমরা তার সমস্ত শরীরকেও নিয়ন্ত্রণ করতে পারি।
4 Consider ships as well. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot is inclined.
কিংবা উদাহরণস্বরূপ, জাহাজের কথাই ধরো। যদিও সেগুলি অনেক বড়ো ও প্রবল বাতাসে চলে, তবুও নাবিক একটি ছোটো হালের সাহায্যে যেদিকে ইচ্ছা সেদিকে নিয়ে যায়।
5 In the same way, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it boasts of great things. Consider how small a spark sets a great forest ablaze.
একইভাবে, জিভ শরীরের একটি ছোটো অঙ্গ, কিন্তু তা মহা দম্ভের সব কথা বলে থাকে। ভেবে দেখো, সামান্য একটি আগুনের ফুলকি কীভাবে মহা অরণ্যকে জ্বালিয়ে দেয়!
6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness among the parts of the body. It pollutes the whole person, sets the course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. (Geenna g1067)
সেরকম, জিভও যেন এক আগুন, শরীরের অঙ্গপ্রত্যঙ্গের মধ্যে অধর্মের এক জগতের মতো রয়েছে। সমগ্র ব্যক্তিসত্তাকে তা কলুষিত করে, তার সমগ্র জীবনচক্রে আগুন জ্বালায় এবং সে নিজেও নরকের আগুনে জ্বলে। (Geenna g1067)
7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man,
সব ধরনের পশুপাখি, সরীসৃপ ও সামুদ্রিক প্রাণীকে বশ করা যায় ও মানুষ তাদের বশ করেছে,
8 but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
কিন্তু জিভকে কেউই বশ করতে পারে না। এ এক অশান্ত মন্দতা ও প্রাণঘাতী বিষে পূর্ণ।
9 With the tongue we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness.
এই জিভ দিয়েই আমরা আমাদের প্রভু ও পিতার গৌরব করি, আবার এ দিয়েই আমরা ঈশ্বরের সাদৃশ্যে সৃষ্ট সব মানুষকে অভিশাপ দিই।
10 Out of the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, this should not be!
একই মুখ থেকে প্রশংসা ও অভিশাপ বের হয়ে আসে। আমার ভাইবোনেরা, এরকম হওয়া উচিত নয়।
11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?
একই উৎস থেকে কি মিষ্টি জল ও লবণাক্ত জল, উভয়ই প্রবাহিত হতে পারে?
12 My brothers, can a fig tree grow olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
আমার ভাইবোনেরা, ডুমুর গাছে কি জলপাই, কিংবা দ্রাক্ষালতায় কি ডুমুর উৎপন্ন হতে পারে? তেমনই লবণাক্ত জলের উৎস মিষ্টি জল দিতে পারে না।
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good conduct, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.
তোমাদের মধ্যে কে জ্ঞানবান ও বুদ্ধিমান? সে জ্ঞানের মাধ্যমে আসা সৎ জীবন ও নম্রতায় করা কাজকর্মের দ্বারা তা প্রমাণ করুক।
14 But if you harbor bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast in it or deny the truth.
কিন্তু তোমরা যদি তোমাদের অন্তরে তিক্ত ঈর্ষা ও স্বার্থকেন্দ্রিক উচ্চাশা পোষণ করো, তার জন্য গর্বপ্রকাশ কোরো না বা সত্যকে অস্বীকার কোরো না।
15 Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.
এ ধরনের “জ্ঞান” স্বর্গ থেকে নেমে আসে না। তা পার্থিব, সাংসারিক ও শয়তানসুলভ।
16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil practice.
কারণ যেখানে তোমাদের মধ্যে ঈর্ষা ও স্বার্থকেন্দ্রিক উচ্চাশা আছে, সেখানেই তোমরা দেখবে বিশৃঙ্খলা ও সব ধরনের মন্দ অভ্যাস।
17 But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere.
কিন্তু স্বর্গ থেকে যে জ্ঞান আসে, প্রথমত তা বিশুদ্ধ, তারপরে তা শান্তিপ্রিয়, সুবিবেচক, অনুগত, করুণায় ও উৎকৃষ্ট ফলে পূর্ণ, পক্ষপাতশূন্য ও অকপট।
18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap the fruit of righteousness.
আর যারা শান্তি স্থাপনের জন্য শান্তিতে বীজবপন করে, তারা ধার্মিকতার ফসল উৎপন্ন করবে।
