James 2
1 My brothers, as you hold out your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, do not show favoritism.
হে আমার ভাইবোনেরা, আমাদের মহিমাময় প্রভু যীশু খ্রীষ্টে বিশ্বাসীরূপে তোমরা পক্ষপাতিত্ব দেখিয়ো না।
2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in.
মনে করো, কোনো ব্যক্তি সোনার আংটি ও সুন্দর পোশাক পরে তোমাদের মণ্ডলীর সভায় এল এবং মলিন পোশাক পরে একজন দীনহীন ব্যক্তিও সেখানে এল।
3 If you lavish attention on the man in fine clothes and say, “Here is a seat of honor,” but say to the poor man, “You must stand” or “Sit at my feet,”
তোমরা যদি সুন্দর পোশাক পরা ব্যক্তির প্রতি বিশেষ মনোযোগ দেখাও ও তাকে বলো, “এখানে আপনার জন্য একটি ভালো আসন আছে,” কিন্তু সেই দীনহীন ব্যক্তিকে বলো, “তুমি ওখানে দাঁড়াও” বা “আমার পায়ের কাছে মেঝের উপরে বসো,”
4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
তাহলে তোমরা কি নিজেদের মধ্যে বৈষম্যমূলক আচরণ করছ না ও মন্দ ভাবনা নিয়ে বিচারকের স্থান গ্রহণ করছ না?
5 Listen, my beloved brothers: Has not God chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom He promised those who love Him?
আমার প্রিয় ভাইবোনেরা, তোমরা শোনো: জগতের দৃষ্টিতে যারা দরিদ্র, ঈশ্বর কি তাদের মনোনীত করেননি, যেন তারা বিশ্বাসে ধনী হয় এবং যারা তাঁকে ভালোবাসে, তাদের কাছে প্রতিশ্রুত রাজ্যের অধিকারী হয়?
6 But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who oppress you and drag you into court?
কিন্তু তোমরা সেই দরিদ্রকে অপমান করেছ। ধনী ব্যক্তিরাই কি তোমাদের শোষণ করে না? তারাই কি তোমাদের বিচারালয়ে টেনে নিয়ে যায় না?
7 Are they not the ones who blaspheme the noble name by which you have been called?
তারাই কি সেই পরমশ্রেষ্ঠ নামের নিন্দা করে না, যাঁর নিজস্ব অধিকাররূপে তোমরা পরিচিত হয়েছ?
8 If you really fulfill the royal law stated in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well.
শাস্ত্রের এই রাজকীয় বিধান, “তোমার প্রতিবেশীকে নিজের মতোই ভালোবেসো,” যদি তোমরা প্রকৃতই মেনে চলো, তাহলে তোমরা ঠিকই করছ।
9 But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.
কিন্তু তোমরা যদি পক্ষপাতিত্ব করো, তবে পাপ করেছ এবং বিধানের দ্বারাই তোমরা বিধানভঙ্গকারীরূপে দোষী সাব্যস্ত হবে।
10 Whoever keeps the whole law but stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.
কারণ সমস্ত বিধান পালন করে কেউ যদি শুধুমাত্র একটি আজ্ঞা পালনে ব্যর্থ হয়, সে তার সমস্তই লঙ্ঘনের দায়ে দোষী হবে।
11 For He who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.
কারণ যিনি বলেছেন, “ব্যভিচার কোরো না,” তিনিই আবার বলেছেন, “তোমরা নরহত্যা কোরো না।” তোমরা হয়তো ব্যভিচার করোনি, কিন্তু যদি নরহত্যা করে থাকো, তাহলে তোমরা বিধানভঙ্গকারী হয়েছ।
12 Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom.
যে বিধানের দ্বারা তোমরা স্বাধীনতা লাভ করেছ তারই দ্বারা তোমাদের বিচার হতে চলেছে, তোমরা সেইমতো কথা বলো ও কাজ করো।
13 For judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
কারণ যে দয়া দেখায়নি, নির্দয়ভাবে তার বিচার করা হবে। দয়াই বিচারের উপরে জয়লাভ করে।
14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone claims to have faith, but has no deeds? Can such faith save him?
কোনো মানুষ যদি দাবি করে তার বিশ্বাস আছে, কিন্তু সেইমতো কোনো কর্ম না থাকে, তাহলে আমার ভাইবোনেরা, এতে কী লাভ হবে? এ ধরনের বিশ্বাস কি তাকে পরিত্রাণ দিতে পারে?
15 Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food.
মনে করো, কোনো ভাই বা বোনের পোশাক ও দৈনন্দিন খাবারের সংস্থান নেই।
16 If one of you tells him, “Go in peace; stay warm and well fed,” but does not provide for his physical needs, what good is that?
তোমাদের মধ্যে কেউ যদি তাকে বলে, “শান্তিতে যাও, তুমি উষ্ণ ও তৃপ্ত থাকো,” কিন্তু তার শারীরিক প্রয়োজন সম্পর্কে সে কিছুই না করে, তাহলে, তাতে কী লাভ হবে?
17 So too, faith by itself, if it does not result in action, is dead.
একইভাবে, বিশ্বাসের সঙ্গে যদি কর্ম যুক্ত না হয়, তাহলে সেই বিশ্বাস মৃত।
18 But someone will say, “You have faith and I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.
কিন্তু কেউ হয়তো বলবে, “তোমার বিশ্বাস আছে, কিন্তু আমার কর্ম আছে।” আমাকে তোমার কর্মহীন বিশ্বাসের প্রমাণ দেখাও, আমি তোমাকে আমার কর্মের মাধ্যমে বিশ্বাস দেখাব।
19 You believe that God is one. Good for you! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.
তুমি তো বিশ্বাস করো যে, ঈশ্বর এক। ভালো, এমনকি, ভূতেরাও তা বিশ্বাস করে ও ভয়ে কাঁপে।
20 O foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is worthless?
ওহে নির্বোধ মানুষ, কর্মহীন বিশ্বাস যে নিরর্থক, তুমি কি তার প্রমাণ চাও?
21 Was not our father Abraham justified by what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?
আমাদের পূর্বপুরুষ অব্রাহাম, তাঁর পুত্র ইস্হাককে বেদির উপরে উৎসর্গ করেছিলেন এবং তাঁর কর্মের দ্বারাই তাঁকে কি ঈশ্বরের সাক্ষাতে ধার্মিক দেখানো হয়নি?
22 You see that his faith was working with his actions, and his faith was perfected by what he did.
তাহলে, তোমরা দেখতে পাচ্ছ যে, তাঁর বিশ্বাস ও তাঁর কর্ম একযোগে সক্রিয় ছিল এবং কর্মের দ্বারাই তাঁর বিশ্বাস পূর্ণতা লাভ করেছিল।
23 And the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called a friend of God.
আবার শাস্ত্রেরও এই বচন পূর্ণ হল, যা বলে, “অব্রাহাম ঈশ্বরকে বিশ্বাস করলেন এবং তা তাঁর পক্ষে ধার্মিকতা বলে গণ্য হল।” আর তিনি ঈশ্বরের বন্ধু—এই নামে আখ্যাত হলেন।
24 As you can see, a man is justified by his deeds and not by faith alone.
তোমরা দেখতে পাচ্ছ, কোনো মানুষ কেবলমাত্র বিশ্বাসে নয়, কিন্তু তার কর্মের দ্বারাই নির্দোষ গণ্য হয়।
25 In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute justified by her actions when she welcomed the spies and sent them off on another route?
একইভাবে, বেশ্যা রাহবও তাঁর কর্মের জন্য কি ধার্মিক বলে প্রদর্শিত হননি? তিনি সেই গুপ্তচরদের থাকার আশ্রয় দিয়ে, পরে অন্য পথ দিয়ে তাদের বিদায় দিয়েছিলেন।
26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.
যেমন আত্মাবিহীন শরীর মৃত, তেমনই কর্মবিহীন বিশ্বাসও মৃত।
