Isaiah 37
1 On hearing this report, King Hezekiah tore his clothes, put on sackcloth, and entered the house of the LORD.
Et quand le roi Ézéchias ouït ces choses, il déchira ses vêtements et se couvrit du cilice, et se rendit à la maison de l'Éternel.
2 And he sent Eliakim the palace administrator, Shebna the scribe, and the leading priests, all wearing sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz
Et il envoya Eliacim, préfet du palais, et Sebna le secrétaire, et les plus anciens des sacrificateurs, couverts de cilices, auprès d'Ésaïe le prophète, fils d'Amots.
3 to tell him, “This is what Hezekiah says: Today is a day of distress, rebuke, and disgrace; for children have come to the point of birth, but there is no strength to deliver them.
Et ils lui dirent: Ainsi parle Ézéchias: Ce jour est un jour de détresse et de châtiment et d'opprobre, car les enfants sont venus jusqu'au moment de naître, et il n'y a pas de force pour enfanter.
4 Perhaps the LORD your God will hear the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to defy the living God, and He will rebuke him for the words that the LORD your God has heard. Therefore lift up a prayer for the remnant that still survives.”
Peut-être l'Éternel ton Dieu prendra-t-il garde aux paroles de Rabsaké envoyé par le roi d'Assyrie, son maître, pour insulter au Dieu vivant, et tirera-t-Il vengeance des paroles qu'a entendues l'Éternel ton Dieu. Élève donc tes prières en faveur des restes encore existants du peuple.
5 So the servants of King Hezekiah went to Isaiah,
C'est ainsi que les serviteurs du roi Ézéchias vinrent auprès d'Ésaïe.
6 who replied, “Tell your master that this is what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid of the words you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me.
Et Ésaïe leur dit: Ainsi parlez à votre Seigneur: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: N'aie point peur des paroles que tu as entendues, par lesquelles m'ont insulté les valets du roi d'Assyrie.
7 Behold, I will put a spirit in him so that he will hear a rumor and return to his own land, where I will cause him to fall by the sword.’”
Voici, je lui communiquerai un esprit, et à l'ouïe d'une nouvelle il retournera dans son pays, et je l'abattrai par l'épée dans son pays.
8 When the Rabshakeh heard that the king of Assyria had left Lachish, he withdrew and found the king fighting against Libnah.
Et Rabsaké s'en retourna, et il trouva le roi d'Assyrie assaillant Libna; car il avait appris qu'il avait quitté son campement de Lachis.
9 Now Sennacherib had been warned about Tirhakah king of Cush: “He has set out to fight against you.” On hearing this, Sennacherib sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,
Alors il ouït dire de Thiraca, roi d'Ethiopie: Il s'est mis en campagne pour te combattre. A cette nouvelle il envoya des députés à Ézéchias, leur disant:
10 “Give this message to Hezekiah king of Judah: ‘Do not let your God, in whom you trust, deceive you by saying that Jerusalem will not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
Ainsi vous parlerez à Ézéchias, roi de Juda, disant: Ne sois pas la dupe de ton Dieu, en qui tu te confies, disant: Jérusalem ne sera point livrée aux mains du roi d'Assyrie.
11 Surely you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the other countries, devoting them to destruction. Will you then be spared?
Voici, tu as appris ce que les rois d'Assyrie ont fait à tous les pays, comment ils les ont exterminés; et toi, tu resterais sain et sauf?
12 Did the gods of the nations destroyed by my fathers rescue those nations—the gods of Gozan, Haran, and Rezeph, and of the people of Eden in Telassar?
Les dieux des nations que mes pères ont détruites, les ont-ils sauvées, Gozan et Haran, et Retseph et les enfants d'Eden en Thelassar?
13 Where are the kings of Hamath, Arpad, Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah?’”
Où est le roi de Hamath, et le roi d'Arpad, et le roi de la ville de Sepharvaïm, Héna et Ivva?
14 So Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers, read it, and went up to the house of the LORD and spread it out before the LORD.
Et Ézéchias prit la lettre de la main des députés, et la lut, et monta à la maison de l'Éternel; et Ézéchias la déploya devant l'Éternel.
15 And Hezekiah prayed to the LORD:
Et Ézéchias invoqua l'Éternel et dit:
16 “O LORD of Hosts, God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens and the earth.
Éternel des armées, Dieu d'Israël, dont le trône est sur les Chérubins, seul tu es le Dieu de tous les empires de la terre, c'est toi qui as fait les Cieux et la terre!
17 Incline Your ear, O LORD, and hear; open Your eyes, O LORD, and see. Listen to all the words that Sennacherib has sent to defy the living God.
Éternel, incline ton oreille et écoute! Éternel, ouvre ton œil et vois! et entends toutes les paroles que Sanchérib nous adresse pour insulter au Dieu vivant!
18 Truly, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all these countries and their lands.
Il est vrai, Éternel! les rois d'Assyrie ont dévasté tous les pays et leur propre pays,
19 They have cast their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods, but only wood and stone—the work of human hands.
et ils ont jeté leurs dieux au feu, car ils ne sont pas dieux, mais l'œuvre des mains de l'homme, du bois et de la pierre; et ils les ont anéantis.
20 And now, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, O LORD, are God.”
Mais maintenant, Éternel notre Dieu, sauve-nous de sa main, afin que tous les empires de la terre reconnaissent que seul tu es l'Éternel!
21 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Because you have prayed to Me concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria,
Alors Ésaïe, fils d'Amots, envoya à Ézéchias pour lui dire: Ainsi parle l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël: Sur la prière que tu m'as faite au sujet de Sanchérib, roi d'Assyrie,
22 this is the word that the LORD has spoken against him: ‘The Virgin Daughter of Zion despises you and mocks you; the Daughter of Jerusalem shakes her head behind you.
voici la parole que prononce l'Éternel sur lui: « La vierge fille de Sion te méprise et te raille, et la fille de Jérusalem hoche la tête derrière toi.
23 Whom have you taunted and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel!
Qui as-tu insulté et outragé? et contre qui as-tu élevé la voix? Tu as porté avec hauteur tes yeux sur le Saint d'Israël!
24 Through your servants you have taunted the Lord, and you have said: “With my many chariots I have ascended to the heights of the mountains, to the remote peaks of Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, the finest of its cypresses. I have reached its farthest heights, the densest of its forests.
Par tes serviteurs tu as insulté le Seigneur et tu as dit: Avec mes chars nombreux je gravirai les sommets des montagnes, les retraites du Liban, et je couperai ses cèdres élevés, l'élite de ses cyprès, et j'atteindrai le haut de sa dernière cime, les bois de son bocage.
25 I have dug wells and drunk foreign waters. With the soles of my feet I have dried up all the streams of Egypt.”
Je ferai des puits et en boirai l'eau, et sous les pas de mes pieds je dessécherai tous les fleuves de l'Egypte.
26 Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it; in days of old I planned it. Now I have brought it to pass, that you should crush fortified cities into piles of rubble.
N'as-tu pas appris que dès les temps reculés j'opère ces choses, et qu'aux jours d'autrefois j'en ai formé le plan? Et maintenant, j'ai fait arriver que tu fusses un destructeur, qui réduit les villes fortes en ruines désolées;
27 Therefore their inhabitants, devoid of power, are dismayed and ashamed. They are like plants in the field, tender green shoots, grass on the rooftops, scorched before it is grown.
et leurs habitants débiles sont épouvantés et confondus, ils sont comme l'herbe des champs, comme la verdure de la plante, comme le gazon des toits, comme un blé encore sans tige.
28 But I know your sitting down, your going out and coming in, and your raging against Me.
Mais je te suis, quand tu t'assieds, et quand tu te mets en marche, et quand tu arrives, et quand tu t'emportes contre moi.
29 Because your rage and arrogance against Me have reached My ears, I will put My hook in your nose and My bit in your mouth; I will send you back the way you came.’
Parce que tu t'emportes contre moi, et que ton insolence est venue à mon oreille, je mettrai mon anneau dans ta narine, et mon mors entre tes lèvres, et je te ramènerai par le chemin par lequel tu es venu. »
30 And this will be a sign to you, O Hezekiah: This year you will eat what grows on its own, and in the second year what springs from the same. But in the third year you will sow and reap; you will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
Et que ceci soit un signe pour toi: Une année vous mangerez le recru du blé, et la seconde année un grain spontané, et la troisième année vous sèmerez et moissonnerez, vous planterez des vignes et en mangerez le fruit,
31 And the surviving remnant of the house of Judah will again take root below and bear fruit above.
et dès lors les réchappés de la maison de Juda, les survivants pousseront des racines en bas et porteront du fruit en haut;
32 For a remnant will go forth from Jerusalem, and survivors from Mount Zion. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will accomplish this.
car de Jérusalem il sortira un reste, et de la montagne de Sion des réchappes; le zèle de l'Éternel des armées opérera ces choses.
33 So this is what the LORD says about the king of Assyria: ‘He will not enter this city or shoot an arrow into it. He will not come before it with a shield or build up a siege ramp against it.
Aussi, ainsi prononce l'Éternel sur le roi d'Assyrie: Il ne pénétrera point dans cette ville, et n'y décochera point de flèches, et il ne lui présentera aucun bouclier, et n'élèvera point de terrasse contre elle;
34 He will go back the way he came, and he will not enter this city,’
le chemin qu'il a pris, il le reprendra, et dans cette ville il ne pénétrera point, dit l'Éternel.
35 ‘I will defend this city and save it for My own sake and for the sake of My servant David.’”
Car je protège cette ville, afin de la sauver pour l'amour de moi, et pour l'amour de David, mon serviteur. »
36 Then the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 men in the camp of the Assyrians. When the people got up the next morning, there were all the dead bodies!
Et l'ange de l'Éternel sortit et frappa dans le camp des Assyriens cent quatre-vingt-cinq mille hommes; et au lever, le matin, tous ils étaient des cadavres sans vie.
37 So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to Nineveh and stayed there.
Alors Sanchérib, roi d'Assyrie, se mit en marche et partit, et il s'en revint et demeura à Ninive.
38 One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer put him to the sword and escaped to the land of Ararat. And his son Esar-haddon reigned in his place.
Et comme il était prosterné dans le temple de Nisroch, son Dieu, Adrammélech et Scharetser, ses fils, le frappèrent de l'épée; puis ils s'enfuirent au pays d'Ararat. Et Asarhaddon son fils le remplaça comme roi.
