Genesis 47
1 So Joseph went and told Pharaoh: “My father and my brothers, with their flocks and herds and all they own, have come from the land of Canaan and are now in Goshen.”
Etant donc entré, Joseph porta la nouvelle à Pharaon, disant: Mon père et mes frères, leurs brebis, leur gros bétail, et tout ce qu’ils possèdent, sont venus de la terre de Chanaan; et voici qu’ils se sont arrêtés dans la terre de Gessen.
2 And he chose five of his brothers and presented them before Pharaoh.
Il plaça aussi les cinq derniers de ses frères devant le roi.
3 “What is your occupation?” Pharaoh asked Joseph’s brothers. “Your servants are shepherds,” they replied, “both we and our fathers.”
Et le roi leur demanda: Quel genre d’occupation avez-vous? Ils répondirent: Nous, vos serviteurs, nous sommes pasteurs de brebis, et nous et nos pères.
4 Then they said to Pharaoh, “We have come to live in the land for a time, because there is no pasture for the flocks of your servants, since the famine in the land of Canaan has been severe. So now, please allow your servants to settle in the land of Goshen.”
C’est pour séjourner comme étrangers dans votre terre que nous sommes venus; parce qu’il n’y a point de pâturages pour les troupeaux de vos serviteurs, la famine augmentant chaque jour dans la terre de Chanaan; et nous vous prions d’ordonner que nous, vos serviteurs, demeurions dans la terre de Gessen.
5 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Now that your father and brothers have come to you,
C’est pourquoi le roi dit à Joseph: Ton père et tes frères sont venus vers toi:
6 the land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and brothers in the best part of the land. They may dwell in the land of Goshen. And if you know of any talented men among them, put them in charge of my own livestock.”
La terre d’Égypte est en ta présence: fais-les habiter dans le meilleur endroit, et donne-leur la terre de Gessen. Que si tu sais qu’il y ait parmi eux des hommes intelligents, établis-les maîtres de mes troupeaux.
7 Then Joseph brought in his father Jacob and presented him before Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.
Après cela Joseph introduisit son père auprès du roi, et le plaça devant lui. Jacob ayant souhaité au roi toute sorte de prospérités,
8 “How many years have you lived?” Pharaoh asked.
Et ayant été interrogé par lui: Quels sont les jours des années de ta vie?
9 “My travels have lasted 130 years,” Jacob replied. “My years have been few and hard, and they have not matched the years of the travels of my fathers.”
Répondit: Les jours de mon pèlerinage sont de cent trente ans, courts et mauvais, et ils ne sont pas parvenus jusqu’aux jours durant lesquels mes pères ont fait leur pèlerinage.
10 Then Jacob blessed Pharaoh and departed from his presence.
Et, toute sorte de prospérités souhaitées au roi, il sortit dehors.
11 So Joseph settled his father and brothers in the land of Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land, the district of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.
Or Joseph donna en possession à son père et à ses frères en Égypte, dans le lieu le plus fertile, Ramessès, comme avait ordonné Pharaon.
12 Joseph also provided his father and brothers and all his father’s household with food for their families.
Et il les nourrissait eux et toute la maison de son père, donnant des vivres à chacun.
13 There was no food, however, in all that region, because the famine was so severe; the lands of Egypt and Canaan had been exhausted by the famine.
Car dans tout l’univers le pain manquait, et la famine pesait sur la terre principalement d’Égypte et de Chanaan.
14 Joseph collected all the money to be found in the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan in exchange for the grain they were buying, and he brought it into Pharaoh’s palace.
Joseph recueillit de ces pays tout l’argent par la vente du blé, et il le porta au trésor du roi.
15 When the money from the lands of Egypt and Canaan was gone, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, “Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes? For our funds have run out!”
Et lorsque l’argent eut manqué aux acheteurs, toute l’Égypte vint à Joseph, disant: Donnez-nous du pain: pourquoi mourons-nous devant vous, l’argent nous manquant?
16 “Then bring me your livestock,” said Joseph. “Since the money is gone, I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock.”
Celui-ci leur répondit: Amenez vos troupeaux, et je vous donnerai en échange des vivres, si vous n’avez point d’argent.
17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses, their flocks and herds, and their donkeys. Throughout that year he provided them with food in exchange for all their livestock.
Quand ils les eurent amenés, il leur donna des vivres en échange de leurs chevaux, de leurs brebis, de leurs bœufs et de leurs ânes; ainsi il les nourrit cette année-là, en échange de leurs troupeaux.
18 When that year was over, they came to him the second year and said, “We cannot hide from our lord that our money is gone and all our livestock belongs to you. There is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land.
Ils vinrent encore la seconde année, et lui dirent: Nous ne cacherons pas à notre seigneur que, l’argent nous manquant, nos troupeaux nous ont aussi manqué; et ce n’est pas à votre insu qu’excepté les corps et la terre, nous n’avons rien.
19 Why should we perish before your eyes—we and our land as well? Purchase us and our land in exchange for food. Then we, along with our land, will be slaves to Pharaoh. Give us seed that we may live and not die, and that the land may not become desolate.”
Pourquoi donc mourrons-nous sous vos yeux? et nous et notre terre nous serons à vous: achetez-nous pour être les esclaves du roi, et donnez-nous des semences, pour ne pas que, le cultivateur périssant, la terre soit réduite en solitude.
20 So Joseph acquired for Pharaoh all the land in Egypt; the Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields because the famine was so severe upon them. The land became Pharaoh’s,
Joseph donc acheta toute la terre d’Égypte, chacun vendant ses possessions à cause de la grandeur de la famine; et il l’assujettit à Pharaon,
21 and Joseph reduced the people to servitude from one end of Egypt to the other.
Et tous les peuples, depuis une extrémité de l’Égypte jusqu’à l’autre extrémité,
22 However, he did not acquire the priests’ portion of the land, for it had been given to them by Pharaoh. They ate the rations that Pharaoh supplied; so they did not sell their land.
Excepté la terre des prêtres qui leur avait été donnée par le roi; car une quantité déterminée de vivres des greniers publics leur était fournie, et c’est pour cela qu’ils n’ont pas été contraints de vendre leurs possessions.
23 Then Joseph said to the people, “Now that I have acquired you and your land for Pharaoh this day, here is seed for you to sow in the land.
Joseph donc dit au peuple: Voici, comme vous le comprenez, que Pharaon possède et vous et votre terre; recevez des semences et semez les champs,
24 At harvest time, you are to give a fifth of it to Pharaoh, and four-fifths will be yours as seed for the field and food for yourselves and your households and children.”
Afin que vous puissiez avoir des grains. La cinquième partie, vous la donnerez au roi, et les quatre autres, je vous les laisse comme semence et comme nourriture pour vos familles et pour vos enfants.
25 “You have saved our lives,” they said. “We have found favor in our lord’s eyes, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.”
Ils répondirent: Notre salut est en votre main; seulement que notre seigneur ait égard à nous, et joyeux, nous servirons le roi.
26 So Joseph established a law that a fifth of the produce belongs to Pharaoh, and it is in effect in the land of Egypt to this day. Only the priests’ land does not belong to Pharaoh.
Depuis ce temps-là jusqu’au présent jour dans toute la terre d’Égypte, c’est aux rois que la cinquième partie est payée; et cela est comme passé en loi, excepté pour la terre des prêtres, qui fut exempte de cette condition.
27 Now the Israelites settled in the land of Egypt, in the region of Goshen. They acquired property there and became fruitful and increased greatly in number.
Israël donc habita en Égypte, c’est-à-dire, dans la terre de Gessen, et la posséda: et il s’accrut et se multiplia extrêmement.
28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years, and the length of his life was 147 years.
Et il y vécut dix-sept ans; et tous les jours de sa vie furent de cent quarante-sept ans.
29 When the time drew near for Israel to die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes, put your hand under my thigh and promise to show me kindness and faithfulness. Do not bury me in Egypt,
Et comme il voyait approcher le jour de sa mort, il appela son fils Joseph, et lui dit: Si j’ai trouvé grâce devant toi, mets ta main sous ma cuisse; et tu auras pour moi cet égard et cette loyauté, de ne pas m’ensevelir en Égypte;
30 but when I lie down with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt and bury me with them.” Joseph answered, “I will do as you have requested.”
Mais de me laisser dormir avec mes pères, de me transporter hors de cette terre, et de me mettre dans le sépulcre de mes ancêtres. Joseph lui répondit: Oui, je ferai ce que vous avez commandé.
31 “Swear to me,” Jacob said. So Joseph swore to him, and Israel bowed in worship at the head of his bed.
Et lui: Jure-le moi donc, dit-il. Joseph jurant, Israël adora Dieu, se tournant vers le chevet de son lit.
