Genesis 44
1 Then Joseph instructed his steward: “Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each one’s silver in the mouth of his sack.
Y él mandó al que presidía en su casa, diciendo: Hinche los costales de aquestos varones de alimentos, cuanto pudieren llevar, y pon el dinero de cada uno en la boca de su costal.
2 Put my cup, the silver one, in the mouth of the youngest one’s sack, along with the silver for his grain.” So the steward did as Joseph had instructed.
Y mi copa, la copa de plata, pondrás en la boca del costal del menor con el dinero de su trigo. Y él hizo como José dijo.
3 At daybreak, the men were sent on their way with their donkeys.
Venida la mañana, los hombres fueron despedidos con sus asnos.
4 They had not gone far from the city when Joseph told his steward, “Pursue the men at once, and when you overtake them, ask, ‘Why have you repaid good with evil?
En saliendo ellos de la ciudad, que aun no se habían alejado, José dijo al que presidía en su casa: Levántate, y sigue a aquellos hombres: y cuando los tomares, díles: ¿Por qué habéis tornado mal por bien?
5 Is this not the cup my master drinks from and uses for divination? What you have done is wicked!’”
¿No es esta la copa en que bebe mi señor? ¿y en que suele adivinar? mal habéis hecho en lo que hicisteis.
6 When the steward overtook them, he relayed these words to them.
Y como él los alcanzó, díjoles estas palabras.
7 “Why does my lord say these things?” they asked. “Your servants could not possibly do such a thing.
Y ellos le respondieron: ¿Por qué dice mi señor tales cosas? Nunca tal hagan tus siervos.
8 We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan the silver we found in the mouths of our sacks. Why would we steal silver or gold from your master’s house?
He aquí, el dinero que hallamos en la boca de nuestros costales te volvimos a traer desde la tierra de Canaán: ¿cómo pues habíamos de hurtar de casa de tu señor plata ni oro?
9 If any of your servants is found to have it, he must die, and the rest will become slaves of my lord.”
Aquel en quien fuere hallada de tus siervos, que muera, y aun nosotros seremos siervos de mi señor.
10 “As you say,” replied the steward. “But only the one who is found with the cup will be my slave, and the rest of you shall be free of blame.”
Y él dijo: También ahora sea conforme a vuestras palabras: aquel en quien se hallare, será mi siervo, y vosotros seréis sin culpa.
11 So each one quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it.
Ellos entonces diéronse priesa, y derribaron cada uno su costal a tierra, y abrieron cada uno su costal.
12 The steward searched, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest—and the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.
Y buscó, desde el mayor comenzó, y acabó en el menor: y la copa fue hallada en el costal de Ben-jamín.
13 Then they all tore their clothes, loaded their donkeys, and returned to the city.
Entonces ellos rompieron sus vestidos, y cargó cada uno su asno, y volvieron a la ciudad.
14 When Judah and his brothers arrived at Joseph’s house, he was still there, and they fell to the ground before him.
Y llegó Judá y sus hermanos a casa de José, y él estaba aun allí, y postráronse delante de él en tierra.
15 “What is this deed you have done?” Joseph declared. “Do you not know that a man like me can surely divine the truth?”
Y díjoles José: ¿Qué obra es esta que habéis hecho? ¿No sabéis vosotros que un hombre como yo adivinando adivina?
16 “What can we say to my lord?” Judah replied. “How can we plead? How can we justify ourselves? God has exposed the iniquity of your servants. We are now my lord’s slaves—both we and the one who was found with the cup.”
Entonces Judá dijo: ¿Qué diremos a mi señor? ¿Qué hablaremos? o ¿con qué nos justificaremos? Dios ha descubierto la maldad de tus siervos: he aquí, nosotros somos siervos de mi señor, nosotros también, y aquel en cuyo poder fue hallada la copa.
17 But Joseph replied, “Far be it from me to do this. The man who was found with the cup will be my slave. The rest of you may return to your father in peace.”
Y él respondió: Nunca yo tal haga: el varón en cuyo poder fue hallada la copa; aquel será mi siervo: vosotros id en paz a vuestro padre.
18 Then Judah approached Joseph and said, “Sir, please let your servant speak personally to my lord. Do not be angry with your servant, for you are equal to Pharaoh himself.
Entonces Judá se llegó a él, y dijo: Ay, señor mío, ruégote que hable tu siervo una palabra en oídos de mi señor, y no se encienda tu enojo contra tu siervo, pues que tú eres como Faraón.
19 My lord asked his servants, ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’
Mi señor preguntó a sus siervos, diciendo: ¿Tenéis padre, o hermano?
20 And we answered, ‘We have an elderly father and a younger brother, the child of his old age. The boy’s brother is dead. He is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.’
Y nosotros respondimos a mi señor: Tenemos un padre viejo, y un mozo nacido en su vejez, pequeño, y un hermano suyo murió, y él quedó solo de su madre, y su padre le ama.
21 Then you told your servants, ‘Bring him down to me so that I can see him for myself.’
Y tú dijiste a tus siervos: Traédmelo, y yo pondré mis ojos sobre él.
22 So we said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father. If he were to leave, his father would die.’
Y nosotros dijimos a mi señor: El mozo no puede dejar a su padre; porque si dejare a su padre, el padre morirá.
23 But you said to your servants, ‘Unless your younger brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.’
Y dijiste a tus siervos: Si vuestro hermano menor no descendiere con vosotros, no veais más mi rostro.
24 Now when we returned to your servant my father, we relayed your words to him.
Aconteció pues, que como venímos a mi padre tu siervo, contámosle las palabras de mi señor.
25 Then our father said, ‘Go back and buy us some food.’
Y dijo nuestro padre: Volvéd: comprádnos un poco de alimento.
26 But we answered, ‘We cannot go down there unless our younger brother goes with us. So if our younger brother is not with us, we cannot see the man.’
Y nosotros respondimos: No podemos ir: si nuestro hermano menor fuere con nosotros, iremos: porque no podemos ver el rostro del varón, no estando con nosotros nuestro hermano el menor.
27 And your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons.
Entonces tu siervo, mi padre, nos dijo: Vosotros sabéis, que dos hijos me parió mi mujer;
28 When one of them was gone, I said: “Surely he has been torn to pieces.” And I have not seen him since.
Y el uno salió de conmigo, y de él dije: De cierto que fue despedazado; y hasta ahora no le he visto.
29 Now if you also take this one from me and harm comes to him, you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow.’ (Sheol h7585)
Y si tomareis también a este de delante de mí, y le aconteciere algún desastre, haréis descender mis canas con dolor a la sepultura. (Sheol h7585)
30 So if the boy is not with us when I return to your servant, and if my father, whose life is wrapped up in the boy’s life,
Y ahora como yo viniere a tu siervo, mi padre, y el mozo no fuere conmigo, porque su alma está ligada con el alma de él,
31 sees that the boy is not with us, he will die. Then your servants will have brought the gray hair of your servant our father down to Sheol in sorrow. (Sheol h7585)
Será, que como él no vea al mozo, morirá: y tus siervos harán descender las canas de tu siervo nuestro padre con dolor a la sepultura: (Sheol h7585)
32 Indeed, your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father, saying, ‘If I do not return him to you, I will bear the guilt before you, my father, all my life.’
Porque tu siervo salió por fiador por el mozo con mi padre, diciendo: Si no te le volviere, entonces yo seré culpado a mi padre todos los días.
33 Now please let your servant stay here as my lord’s slave in place of the boy. Let him return with his brothers.
Ruégote, pues, que quede ahora tu siervo por el mozo por siervo de mi señor, y el mozo vaya con sus hermanos.
34 For how can I go back to my father without the boy? I could not bear to see the misery that would overwhelm him.”
Porque ¿cómo vendré yo a mi padre sin el mozo? Por no ver el mal que a mi padre vendrá.
